Soft waffled fleece and a great fit for this versatile top!

Great Layer

This is a nice lightweight layer. Great fit and quality.

When the temperature was around 75F

Just wore it on bare skin to see if it does well in mild heat situation as well as in a cool situation. I liked it because the inner side of the Fleece had continuous bumps of some special material that made ventilation of my body heat efficiently and warmed my skin very well in the respective climate situations.

Super Light Super Warm

R1 is the perfect mid-layer, or everyday insulation in cool weather. Thermal-Weight Capilene is close but needs a fleece overlayer. R2 is best for cold layering but still a robust mid. Love the R1 half-zip. New favorite!

LOVE THIS

This fits super well. I'm about 6'1", 170lbs, and it looks nice and sleek. It keeps me warm in cold conditions even though it's super thin and lightweight. I lost the first one I purchased from an REI so I bought another one right away because I used it almost every day. I definitely recommend this purchase.

Excellent quality

This is my favorite quarter zip. It keeps me warm in pretty cold weather and looks nice enough for more public settings. I love it.

Outstanding Layer- Great Service

Excellent layer. Service at the Nashville store is exceptional.

April 15, 2023

Go-to for spring morning commute

Perfect for commuting to work on my Vespa during those colder mornings when it will be too warm later in the day for a jacket.

April 6, 2023

Quality control

Quality control has a problem. My r1 came sewn wrong at the seam of the neck zipper. I also feel like the material of the squares of fkeece have be reduced. Ive not been happy with recent changes from Patagonia and think this will be my last purchase after being a long time buyer

A updated staple

This version of the R1 pullover is great. They've been a staple of my kit for a long time. This version fits great, has plenty of stretch and is long enough to not pull up when I bend over to net fish. It's warm enough over a base layer or light shirt, but not too warm under a rain coat. It's the perfect mid layer for all my seasons.... Read More

Great Ski Midlayer

This is a warm mid layer. My son wore it over a 200 weight merino wool base and under an insulated ski jacket. It kept him warm skiing all day in 20 degree weather. I believe the technology of this top is efficient at breathing because my other son who was wearing double merino complained of being too hot. Lastly, its easy to wash and dried quickly... Perfect Warmth Layer

I'm on my second R1, and the only reason I replaced my last one of 8 years is because I wanted a version without the hood (it got in the way with my hood jackets). It does seem to be a slightly different design from my last one, but still just as warm and excellent quality. Fit is the same as it was. A must have for me!

Love it - just a couple of tweaks...

Love the R1 regulator fleece pullover. The pullover is lightweight and insulates very well. I am very satisfied with the product performance. Couple of things I'd like to see change - (1) get rid of the very long tags on the side seam and the rough tag in the back - the one that annoys your neck. They're a pain and I'm wondering when... Read More Patagonia may go tagless. (2) Arms are very long, as is the body of the pullover. A medium would be too small, so I went with the large which is fine, just not a realistic size for me. (3) Thumbholes would be a big improvement. Given that the garment is often worn under another layer, if there were thumbholes then pulling over another garment would be somewhat more manageable. Otherwise - I love the R1 pullover, and I do recommend it.

Hey James, thanks for your feedback. We'll share your thoughts with our product designers. We typically reserve thumb loop holes for baselayer or Capilene designs, items that are layered under other items. You won't typically find that feature in our pullovers or jackets but we're happy to take the suggestion either way. This is a slim fit item which could explain why the medium felt small and you sized up. You can find the fit of an item by going to it's product page and checking underneath the color options. Too Snug and Quality Was Poorer Than Expected

I was disappointed in this R1 pullover. I usually wear a Large but saw that some of the reviews mentioned it's kind of snug. Snug Pullover

Got to wear this about 10 times before I lost mine. It's a really nice product. First time I wore it, I had to fix a tire. It was chilly outside (40-50s F) but I was comfortable. Didn't mind getting it dirty and was excited to have it on. It's a somewhat unique piece. It runs snug, almost glued to the body in my opinion (am a size M ... Read Moreand bought M). I wore a loose long sleeve shirt and I can feel the excess sleeve material from the shirt against my skin in the arms. So, I wore short sleeve shirts and fitted long sleeve shirts and felt better. You can consider this as a baselayer fit. I really enjoyed wearing this piece especially for activities where you don't want loose clothing. Will buy another one eventually.

My comments re. the R1

My comments re. the R1 and most Patagonia tops have to do with fit. I'm mostly a medium, but unless you're a skinny millennial, its going to fit too tight in the belly/mid section. Hey Michael, thank you for the feedback. We've had many different renditions of the R1, so it's possible you could be thinking of a different pullover or jacket. This particular pullover does have a slim fit, so that could be part of what you experienced. Impressively warm with comfortable, move-with-you fit

I bought this and the Air Crewneck as warmer "mid-layers" (I usually wear mid-layers as my baselayers because I run cold. Hey John, we're so sorry to hear that your R1 was stolen and that you aren't happy with this one. Disappointing Quality and attention to detail

The R1 fabric is special in terms of how it provides warmth and breathability offering an amazing sweet spot for high output activity in cool weather. Read Moreof the zipper adding next-to-skin comfort. It was a thoughtful touch, and one that went gleefully unnoticed until it was gone. Exactly the attention to detail that earns Patagonia its premium and reputation as a thoughtful, performance oriented brand. The new version omits this fabric such that the zipper and an extra bit of scratchy, skin irritating nylon at the bottom, are directly against the skin. It might not be a bother depending on how the garment fits you or if you wear something underneath, though I would argue that this garment performs best worn on its own. Why was this feature omitted on current versions? It strikes me as either an oversight, quality control issue, or cost cutting effort, all of which are unacceptable for a premium brand that should have this level of attention to detail for its customers.

This is the 3rd R1 I bought. I own Patagonia garments that are 25 years old and still worn. I will be returning the R1 I bought a week ago. Poor fit , thinner quality. I have two older R1 pieces bought a few years ago. They are fantastic. The new design is a major step down. The fit around the chest is similar, but it's probably 4-5 inches shorter. For whatever reason, Patagonia continues to change the sizing of their R1. I would say this is a staple item from them. Its been around a long time. Havent found anything better yet, but this will give me reason to start looking at other brands.

Disappointing Fit and Minor Decrease in Quality

The other reviews regarding the fit of the new pullover are absolutely correct. This is my third R1 and the other two are some of my favorite pieces of clothing. This one is getting returned. I am 5'10" and 175 with a moderately athletic build. My shoulders are not very wide, which makes it super surprising that the armpits on this thing... Read More are so incredibly tight. No matter what I do the material from whatever shirt I am wearing beneath this garment gets crumpled up in the armpit and leads to a sweaty underarm mess. Again, I say this as someone who normally never has this problem. It really is extremely tight in the chest, armpit, and arms. Additionally, there seem to be some minor downgrades in the quality of this batch/year or R1s. First, the wrist cuffs are not as stretchy as previous ones. This makes it difficult to push the sleeves up and have them stay up. This was not an issue with previous versions. Additionally, the bottom of the interior chest pocket is no longer stitched along the bottom to attach it to the rest of the garment. This means that when you put it on, your hand can catch in this opening. I personally find this to be an indicator of lack of attention to detail. Why would they change this when it previously was so perfect? All in all, this was an incredibly disappointing purchase. My other two R1s are my favorite pieces of clothing and I would certainly rate them 5 out of 5 starts, so to see these modifications and drop my rating to a 1 is sort of a bummer. Hopefully Patagonia reverts to the quality and design that so many have come to love. P.S. The recent version of the R1 hoody does not seem to have any of these issues. It's great! I wish that this was the same thing, just without the hood.

Oddly Clingy, Not For Me

I wanted to like this, but I just couldn't make it work. I was looking for a slim fitting mid layer that would layer well and play nice with others. It doesn't. Ideal midweight fleece for layering, or as active wear on a cool day. I'm 6'2", 180 and got an XL. It fits in the shoulders, but is a little loose around the midsection. (L was too tight in shoulders, but fit around the midsection)

Runs too small

I was concerned about sizing from other reviews; I normally wear XXL and would have ordered XXXL for that reason but it’s available so I ordered the XXL and had to return it (the Patagonia rep was helpful and nice). Bottom line, it just runs a size smaller than what it should.
