It's a long fit in the torso and ends comfortably at my hips (which I was happy to find). I'm 5'10", 145lbs, and the medium is a slightly loose fit. Would recommend for hiking, and am sure it will serve nicely as a layer for winter activities.
I was excited to see this item go on sale since I had borrowed my sister s R1 in the past and loved it. Unfortunately when my navy blue R1 came it was significantly thinner than I was expecting. It reminds me of a thin long sleeve shirt. Holding it up to the light without stretching it showed it was very thin indeed. (I took a picture to share how ... Read Moremuch light comes right through but I do not see a place to upload review pictures, odd). It is possible that my initial impression of my sisters old R1 being for mid layer use was incorrect and that the item is actually designed to be a first layer. Also possible there is a quality issue with this particular top. Wish I lived near a store. Either way, I already have enough shirts and I am in need a true mid layer so I will be returning. The other item I ordered during the sale was of good quality and will be used for years.
Thank you so much for writing this review Lindsay! We are also very sorry to hear that this purchase led to a return due to the sheerness of the pullover. You may have some luck finding an R1 like your sisters on our [Worn Wear](https://wornwear.patagonia.com/) site. They offer lightly worn past season products at a discounted price so you may find a previous season R1 Pullover there!
This mid-layer is exactly what I’ve been looking for! It’s soft and warm and not too bulky so I can layer it for cold days. The fit is great! For reference I’m 5’2” 106 and 32B and an XS fits great and I can layer a tight base layer under it perfectly. It’s also cute to wear for casual wear!!
This is a gorgeous "sweater". It is made of wonderful material, feels warm, nice color and good light weight. A thin waffle pattern Fleece
Its warm, but also very thin. Probably regulate temps nicely when out for a run on a cold morning. Waffle like texture. A bit itchy. Overall a nice piece.

Beautifully functional
Perfect weight for runs in cooling autumn temperatures. Its a beautiful,
well constructed garment in addition to its functionality.
This is my "do it all" fleece. I am usually bringing some type of R1 item on all adventures. It is lightweight, breathes well, dries super fast, it's warm, and easy dump heat w/ the deep quarter zip wh... Read Moreen I start to get too hot. The fit is slim and trim against the body, long enough and comfortable with a pack + hipbelt. I do not climb but know that the longer length works great under a harness. I have several R1s from over the years and would LOVE it if Patagonia brought back the women's R1 hoodie 1/4 zip. It is by far my favorite R1 and would love to have another as my old one is starting to show wear in some areas.
This was a gift to a friend. She absolutely loves it and wears it all the time. She lives in Colorado snow country, Crested Butte, so it is a wardrobe staple most of the year, especially in winter.
I absolutely love it. This Fleece Pullover is awesome, soft and comfortable. I highly recommend. I did size up because it is a slim fit. I have two now and love them.
I love Patagonia technical tops but this one is my least favorite. The waffle texture is scratchy inside. The fit is too snug. Other tops in a similar style are more comfortable.
Hi Jane! Thank you for writing us a review on the R1 Pullover. We're really sorry to hear about the disapointment with the material. I got the teal blue
I got the teal blue and love the color. It fits perfectly and keeps me comfortable - not too warm or cold. Plus it looks great under my black sweater vest! Another winner!
I wore this top as my mid layer on a car camping/hiking excursion. The weather was snowy, windy and very cold. This top was ideal as well as attractive I am 5ft 2 in and weigh 112 lbs. The sleeve length was just right as well as the over all length
I have been purchasing this pull over for many years. I have 5. I have always worn a medium. Lat year I purchased another in medium and it was too small. Runs very small. Have purchased 6 of these in three different styles and current style is real small. Needed an xxl to not feel like a sausage . Still this a great piece of clothing for the price.
Love upper pocket & great on the left side. Had the same kind of shirt for 10 years. Still in good shape. Need a second for backup! I XCTRY Ski & on sunny cold days I usually remove my jacket.
I love this pullover so much that I bought in two colors and sizes. It has a polished look and shape that can be worn on the slopes or in the office and out to happy hour. Waffle fleece interior next to skin is wonderful. Fabric has some stretch and length is perfect. My bust is 32C, and the S fits like a base layer under ski jacket; M has room to ... A warm breathable fleece, what more could you ask for? Perfect for wearing under a coat/shell for outside, and then not suffocating-ly hot when you go indoors. The cut is perfect, and I love the longer length. It's a perfect piece!
I wore this pullover skiing this weekend with Patagonia's merino wool base layer and it worked great to keep me warm under my jacket. I sized up on this product to accommodate thicker layers, but could have gone with my regular size medium as the fabric has some stretch to it. I would definitely buy this product again!
Extremely warm nice fit for skiing in cold weather
I just bought the R1 Regulator Fleece Pullover in white and wore it over a Patagonia Capilene Midweight zip neck while skiing in 19 degree weather along with my Patagonia insulated jacket. I was warm and comfortable. This pullover fits nicely to my body and has a less bulky feel than the R1 Air Zip Neck that I also have. I highly recommend it!
I had to go back to the store and return it and you didn't have that color in the store so I had to get the Navy and then I had to get yet another size larger so I ended up with a large which was actually too large but I kept it and wear it anyway.
My partner has had one of these tops for a couple years, and I've always been jealous. It looks really nice on and is soft and cozy. I finally made the investment and have had zero regrets. Versatile, warm, breathable, looks nice! Would recommend over and over again!
Love the R1; I use it for casual wear at work and also as a midweight layer while skiing or winter hiking. Fits true to size, love the waffle fleece inside!
Thank you for taking the time to submit this review, Jennifer. We're sorry to hear you're disappointed with the R1! We will reach out to you about return options.

Perfect for spring weather
I dont usually like pull overs; but this fleece pull over is so soft and easy to get in and out of. Nice light weight and true to size. I would definitely buy again.
This fleece is a good transition weight and great for everyday as well as for travel. The pocket fits my iphone. It is fitted but not too tight. The length is great as it is longer than the waist and covers hips.
I am used to most Patagonia women's tops being too short for my liking (making me look boxy and too hippy; bordering on belly tops for my height). I have been purchasing R1 pullovers since they were first offered. Two are 20+ Years old. Ones purchased in the last ten years have been a terrible disappointment. It's a winner
Man I love these R1's. Its a perfect layering piece. I wouldn't have thought anything of them until my husband insisted I get one, and now I've found my perfect midlayer and will not stray. Love the versatility of this piece! The gridded fleece inside keeps me so warm. The sizing of the jacket is a slim fit. I sized up and it is perfect. This is a great layer for traveling. I went to Germany in fall and ended up wearing this just about every day of the trip. It's a nice length to wear with jeans or hiking pants. It's also a good weight on it's own for a cool weather hike or layering under a rain jacket. Plus it looks great! So glad I bought this versatile piece.
I have a TNF warm fleece that I use for hikes and long walks in the winter over a light base layer (I'm in California, and usually the temperatures are around 48-55). I find that fleece dumps heat well, while keeping me warm. I do run cold. TNF fleece is lightweight and fine, but I needed a second one, so I tried the Patagonia R1, and I'm... Read More glad I did! I do think the R1 is warmer; also, the neck fits more snugly, which is great. The chest pocket is a nice touch too. My only complaint, which is really minor, is that the fabric is a bit rough against my skin; it is not chinchilla-soft like some other fleece tops. However, since it works so well in every other way, I'm fine with that. I recommend it!
Love this pullover, I have two colors now. I have used the pullover outdoor climbing and now with a newborn out climbing, its a great nursing shirt with the front zipper while keeping you warm.
First of all, its a bit smelly, and it was straight out of the bag brand new. Smells like a strong plastic scent and Ive washed it at least 4 times with detergent. The fuzzy fleece interior is warm but its definitely underwhelming as a pullover.

Warm and Functional
Keeps me really warm on cold weather runs. Love the extra deep chest zip for maximum ventilation as I heat up. Chest pocket also convenient for stashing a key.
Its nice, its warm but its too snug! I weigh 120 pounds and am not large, but I feel a bit like Im squeezing into this, prefer warm clothes to have a looser fit. I dont reach for it.
My first comment is that this is a great piece in terms of weight and breathability/wicking capability. I get hot pretty quickly when I'm active, and in the colder weather it's especially important for me to be able to dump accumulated heat. The inner fleece and the functionality of the grid is great. My issue is with the neck, which is t... Read Moreight and uncomfortable to zip up all the way. It's great to have that option to stay warm, but not if it's too tight to be comfortable or breathable. This is the third version of this piece that I've owned over the years, and while they all fit differently, the neck has always been too snug (note: I do not have an abnormally sized neck!) There is limited overall stretch to the piece (which, again, has changed over the years), so that might be part of the issue... My suggestion is to try this on and make sure you can move comfortably before you commit!
Love that this is longer in the torso and goes to mid hip. That is how I like to wear my tops. I am carrying extra focus weight right now 56 and 162. The medium fit well. And I can tell that if I went down to my normal 146lbs, this would still fit well.
Bought this to use as a heavier base layer than my thermal weight one. I like it, the slightly higher collar height keeps my neck nice and warm. This is a perfect layer for hiking or around town. I did have to buy up in size so it wasn't too tight, though that made it too long for me. I still wear it, just wish it wasn't so long on me; I'm 5'2".
Was looking for a warm layer that actually fit - thank you Patagonia for offering xxs in some items. It's my go to. Love the color, warmth, everything about it. Highly recommend.
I was hoping this top had been redesigned as I had tried it on a outdoor gear store and it was just what I was looking for, a slim fit and a longer length, they didnt have small, no problem I thought Id order online, ( must have been an outlier) I realized that ordering online its just the same boxy thin top, dont know why Patagonia doesnt do a pri... Not the R1 of old but good
I really love R1s, and this latest version fits better and is lighter than previous ones. That being said, I dont find it as breathable as my older versions, which means its great for super cold weather but can feel a little too warm for transitional seasons. Get lots of compliments though so as usual Patagonia delivers on style and fit.
This is the perfect spring/summer weight fleece for everything. I love the way it looks on a zoom call - the slim fit makes it look more dare I say more professional? Also a great spring layer for hiking, long walks, grocery shopping and whatever life throws at you. This is the fleece I want to wear everyday.
I have both the R1 and the R2 now, and I'd say I use the R1 more for skiing and hiking base layers than the R2. Slim fit and good quick dry fabric. I bought one of these to try and liked the way it fit on me so I bought another! The R1 half-zip hoody was truly a staple technical base layer for any outdoor winter activity.

New Go To Patagonia!
I absolutely love this pullover. This was purchased for me as a gift while in Oregon in the winter. Ive worn it while fly fishing under an outer shell and waders and it kept me very warm but not hot. Im not sure Ill ever have a need for that though!
I got this after months of contemplation (primarily for camping, running, etc.), and I have rarely been so excited and satisfied by an article of clothing. The breast pocket is clutch for keeping my phone cozy on chilly days, making sure I have battery when I need. I wash it in activewear detergent and air dry it and it looks as good as new, with some slight pilling. It fits me well and is nice enough to wear ~out on the town~. Worth every penny!
I recently bought my 2nd R1 fleece pullover because I liked the first one so much. This one (different color) is tighter so shows every bulge. I'm hoping it will loosen up over time. Mixed feelings
This is my go to layer for colder days in the backcountry, be it touring, climbing, mountaineering, etc. Its almost perfect. I have two qualms. The first is that the sleeves are way too short. Its easier to deal with a slightly too long a sleeve than one thats too short.

I love, love, love my R1 Pullover! It's soft and comfortable, and it breathes so well. I only want to wear it, so all my other clothes are getting neglected now. The only improvement I could suggest would be to put hand pockets on the lower front. But it's 5 stars even without low pockets.
Love this pullover. Fitted without feeling too tight or restrictive. Super light weight but very warm. Thin enough to fit under other layers without feeling bulky. I bought a second color I loved it so much.
This is the best pullover long sleeve shirt I own. It is soft and warm Keeps your body heat in. I have barely taken it off since I got it. Great for layering when skiing or hiking or just walking around town.
Hi Emilia! Thanks for your feedback. We're sorry to hear the R1 Pullover wasn't quite what you were expecting. This garment is intended to be a lightweight mid-layer to keep you warm and comfortable during stop-and-go activities. If you'd like to opt for something with a bit more insulation, I would recommend checking out our [R2 Jacket](https://www.patagonia.com/product/womens-r2-regulator-fleece-jacket/25149.html?dwvar_25149_color=BCW&cgid=womens-fleece#tile-9=&start=1&sz=24). Love it! Was looking for
Love it! Was looking for a fleece lined, light weight sweater to run with and this is perfect for that!
Used at Mt. Rainier, this layer was perfect for trapping heat or venting as needed through our time in the park. A must for snowshoeing season! Many thanks to Patagonia for adding XXL in women's. At 6' 1", the XL shoulders were just too tight.
I've had a black R1 for a decade and added a navy R1 to my collection this fall. I like the seam work on the sleeves. Looking forward to this new R1 lasting over a decade too.
Love the color (light blue) and the feel of the pullover, but it is way too long. I am not petite - 5'7". This goes below my bottom. So - it is longer than many of my jackets, and i wouldn't want to ski with it - as I can't tuck that much fabric in to my pants. I'll be returning it, unfortunately.
I adore my pullover R1. I have utilized it in a myriad of instances from commuting to work, yoga, a chilly autumn mt. bike ride, and around the house. It is soft and stretchy, warm and resilient.
It may be my new favorite! Thank you, Yvon and Company :)
this warm layer is cozy enough by itself for keeping warm for hikes, runs, etc. but would be a great layer in extra cold weather, too. i love the fit, it is long enough to cover below the waist, yet form-fitting so it hugs ever-so-gently as not to ride-up while running or being active. while it runs small, i think that is a good thing for a layerin... Read Moreg piece! you only need a tank-top underneath and it will keep you plenty warm.
A favorite piece of clothing in our house. This purchase was a replacement for my wife’s R1 from fifteen years ago that my daughter lost at school. Hopefully she’ll get at least fifteen more years out of this one.
This pullover will probably become one of my favorite layers for Winter. It is super warm, fits very nicely-runs a bit small, and keeps the heat in and moisture out.
I love this shirt! It's super warm and functional, but still form fitting and feminine, without being too tight (if that makes sense). I wear it hiking, to work, and out to the breweries with friends. Probably going to get another one.
Recently re-purchased one of these after my old one was left behind in a move. The jacket is great for all kinds of weather - it's form fitting enough to work well for layering, but also looks nice on its own. It's pretty long in the torso, so it doesn't ride up under a hiking pack. The sleeves are a little snug, but not crazy long l... Read Moreike some reviews suggest (I'm tall, but the sleeves are almost a little short on me). I got the pink color and love it!
Got it on sale, in a color that I wouldn’t normally choose, the maroon. Turns out I like the color a lot.
It seems like it will be really great for colder weather as a first super soft layer or by itself, but way too warm for this September, so unfortunately will sit in the closet for a month or so.
I bought this midlayer for a 6 day trek on the Laugavegur Trail in Iceland. It was exactly what I was hoping for and exactly what I needed. I used it a lot as the temperatures were mostly in the 40s. I wore a wool base layer underneath and it keep me plenty warm. It packed down small enough for my pack and was lightweight. Great product!
go-to midlayer for cold-weather aerobic activities
LOVE this R1! Took it to Nepal in December for Annapurna circuit along with another midlayer but I ended up wearing only this one for the whole week. I hike hot and this really BREATHES, under an outer insulated layer when super cold and as a outer layer when less cold just on top of my baselayer (Capilene Thermal). Fit is forgiving, and I find the... Read More arms a bit long but not enough that I have to pull/fold them up - I don't mind a bit of extra fabric at the wrist in cold weather. I loved it so much that I got the full-zipped jacket version for dedicated outer layer use. P.S. I like both (the half-zip and the full-zip) without a hood because my shells have hoods and I don't like midlayer hood getting in the way in suddenly inclement weather (plus my body doesn't regulate heat fast/well so I tend to prefer separate pieces, i.e. hat, neck gaiter, jacket vs. hooded midlayer), but I still support others' complaint about fewer selections available for women (vs. men) P.P.S. I got last (?) season's with Patagonia logo on the left chest stitched on (vs. sewn-on tag) which I think looks more classy/subtle, just IMHO.
I LOVE my R1! Seriously love it. It’s my favorite mid level piece, I wear it all the time, it keeps me warm in Chicago winters, high up on the wall, and around the campfire. BUT I have the hooded version. Why is there a men’s hooded version but not a women’s version? What gives Patagonia?!? Why can’t we have hoods too!! Part of the reason it keeps ... Read Moreme so very warm is because of the hood. I would love another R1 (I have the black one), but I’m searching for second hand R1s that have a hood. Please Patagonia, I beg of you, can I have a hood?!
I run cold so this piece is perfect for me. You can do anything you want in it, but i recommend it for cold weather only. I use it when i run in the winter, i use it as a mid layer when i hike in the fall and spring, and i use it as an outer layer for casual wear. Very versatile. I think i would get the jacket next time as opposed to the pullover t... Read Morehough. love that it has a big chest pocket for money/phone.
I love the R1, it is soft and cozy on the inside and breathes exceptionally well. The fit is close but not confining. I'm typically an XL in REI or Columbia clothing and the XL fits perfectly.
I got my R1 mostly as a layering piece, that being said I was hoping for the torso to be more of a slim fit, and not as boxy as it is. The arms and shoulders fit well, so I don’t think I’ll size down. It’s also a bit longer than I anticipated, which hasn’t been the worst being able to tuck it in my ski pants.
Overall I’m wearing this as more of an... Read More outer layer over a merino baselayer so far since I ordered at the end of the winter. Will be curious how well I can layer it next winter.
Overall, a good purchase but more casual looking with the relaxed torso fit, I was hoping for a more mid-layer sporty look. I’d love to see more than one style offered in women’s!!!
I am 5'8" and the sleeves on a small are about 3" too long and the length is 4" too long. Patagonia no longer knows how to make clothing to fit.
Sorry, this is going back and I do not think I will go back to shop because of this.
I own this pullover (old version, not the new one), and enjoy it a lot. It is great as a standalone layer in mild climates or during high-output activities in colder weather, and an excellent layering piece in very cold weather.
But I just can't understand WHY you would get rid of the pullover hoody for women. In an era of touting how amazing ... Read Morethe R1 is - with a video of 2 men - and then getting rid of the women's pullover hoody... this honestly feels like a slap in the face. I've been waiting to buy a R1 pullover hoody until I found a color way that I liked, and now it seems like that won't happen. Every woman that I've spoken with about this in the OI is upset about the removal of the pullover hoody option, while men still get their pullover hoody. PLEASE BRING IT BACK!
Absolutely love the updated fit on the R1 and just keep waiting for more colors to come out. As a tallish (5'9') and very fit woman, finding tops in XS that are actually long enough to not stop short in the torso and arms is a huge challenge. Nice shape through waist and plenty of range of movement through shoulders and arms. Awesome - Th... Read Moreanks Patagonia!
I absolutely love the R1 pullover and have bought a new one each season for the last three years. I just ordered another one (because I live in them) and, unfortunately, the sizing changed dramatically for the extra small. I just confirmed with customer service that it is roughly 1 1/2" longer than it has been in the past. It is completely dis... Read Moreproportional for a small person who would wear an XS size. Little people don't typically have long torsos - that's one of the frustrating things about buying clothes when you are petite. I love the R1 and probably wear them 3-4 days a week either skiing as a base layer or heading to/from a workout. I'm so sad that these no longer fit :( Designers, why did you make this change!!??
