amazingly versatile. holds stink
This layer is my go-to for just about everything that needs a layer. Hiking, walking, day-to-day. I wore it touring and actually was too sweaty in this layer so best for mod-intensity activity. Super warm, feels amazing on my skin!
Would give 5 but the fit through the armpit was so tight it bunched weird. I had to return. I did order r1 daily pullover and I think that will fit better as a base layer than this one. I wanted it to fit under the cross strata for a little more warmth but unfortunately it just bunched weird.
Best fleece ever made
I have had this fleece for just over a year now. The dusty pink color is perfect. Its soft and fits great. It has just the right amount of pockets. Its warm but yet some how still breathable. I would love it more without the hood
I love the R1 Air products although I find the hood a bit annoying. It is snug, not so easy to pull on when walking my dogs. Yes but no but now maybe yes?
I purchased this item when it first came out and wanted to love it so bad, but found that it was never as comfortable as I wanted it to be. Purchased a few months ago, and it would be my favorite jacket but I am afraid to wear it as often as I would like because it is not wearing well. Love this cozy, soft hoody!
This is so soft, cozy, light-weight, and perfect, and I will be buying another one soon because I expect it to become an everyday part of my wardrobe. Nice jacket but..
Nice jacket but makes lots of fuzzies with normal wear. Not like the R2 series which is more durable.
Hi Sandy, thank you for submitting this review. To do the most to prevent pilling, we recommend washing your hoody either by hand in cool to cold water, or separately in your washing machine on the gentle cycle. It's best to lay it flat to dry rather than place it in the dryer. To remove pilling that has already occurred we recommend using a product like a fabric shaver, which is gentler on fabric than a sweater stone. If the pilling or fuzzing becomes too much of an issue, please keep in mind you are welcome to [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) it at any time under our warranty.
Soft. Well fitted. Comfy!
I like the tailored fit. Im kind of between an XS and Small. The sleeves are a smidge short. I think its because Im used to wearing fleece and long sleeve shirts that are a little longer in the arms. The XS was on sale, so I got it. When a small is on sale, Ill buy one of those, too. Luv Patagonia!
I wanted so much to like this!
I originally ordered a medium in this jacket to start with. That was based on the recommendation of the Patagonia measurements. Comfortable and Versatile
I received my R1 Air yesterday and I am VERY happy with it. I'm 5'4, around 155lbs, with a fairly straight build and traditionally wear a large in Patagonia. Based on some reviews I had read, I was concerned that it would be too slim for my build but I found it to fit perfectly. It is slim, but comfortably so. I have room for movement and... Read More layering underneath (tried with a baggy long sleeved cotton t-shirt and it fit just fine). I love the length of it. I tend to hike and backpack in leggings, but like a little more coverage when I am wearing them and was glad that the R1 air offered that compared to some of my other fleeces that hit at the top of the hip. The fleece feels very lightweight and breathable. Yesterday was about 63 and I am hot natured, but I tossed it on to run a few errands with a Capilene Daily and some leggings and stayed comfortable. I think the zigzag design will offer good breathability for hiking. Overall the design doesn't seem as technical as the standard R1, but aesthetically I prefer it as it reminds me a bit of my favorite Patagonia fleece, the reversible R3, though not as warm. It really is a beautiful fleece and I am excited to take it out on some hikes. I definitely see this fleece being at the top of my rotation.
Love the red color and soft feel!
I love the red color and soft feel of this, but as someone who normally finds Patagonia Small on the slightly large size, the Small in this fleece definitely seems a little too tight around the shoulders/underarm, and also in the sleeve length. Cozy but slightly odd fit
Very warm and cozy with a comfortable fitting neck and shoulders. The torso of the fleece is oddly long though, even on me at 5ft9in. I find it sticks out below my jackets and flares too much at the waist when unzipped as a result. Also makes for a less flattering silhouette overall.
Just Bought Another One
I bought this jacket in December, thinking that I wanted a light but warm fleece that was good for winter hiking and also cute. I love this fleece.
I bought a medium so that it is a bit baggy. I can layer under it. It is very soft; so soft that I often don't layer under it. My phone and dog bags fit in the functional pockets. This is my second one of these. The colors choices are great. My first one is three years old and going strong, great quality.
I would let you try it on, but I'm wearing it right now.
This is what I want to wear when I want to be cozy around the house or when I need an extra layer in between base and puffy. It fits well, looks good, feels good and is extremely functional in all the ways. I appreciate that the pockets zip and that the neck goes up high when zipped up.

Soft, cozy, very warm, runs just slightly small
I have several generations of the R1. It is my absolute favorite piece that Patagonia makes. When this new version came out, I had to try it. I am not going to climb in this one like my others, but I do love wearing it. It is the perfect warm layer for casual wear. The colors are so lovely and it is a cute jacket.
Warm and comfortable yet also high performer
This is one of the best fleece products I have ever owned. I also have an Arcteryx Kyanite, but this is my new favorite for its light weight and breathability. Thanks for the great quality, Patagonia!
Looks Really Worn After Just a Few Weeks
Patagonia is my go-to brand for all my outdoor clothing. I lost a similar fleece earlier this summer and I thought I replaced it with the same item when I bought this fleece. Saying in advance I love it
I think I love this jacket except I ordered my usual size medium and needed to exchange it for a large which I have not yet received. Great sweater for fall
Very warm but lightweight which is great. Packed it in my carry on for Canada and it did not take up much space & kept me warm for several hours in ~50 degree weather. Great color and pockets. Only slight negative is that the bottom of the jacket is too narrow across my hips so I have to bunch it up to my waste to zip it.
Versatile cozy layer
I have almost every variation of the R1 fleece that has been made over the last twenty years. This is the most versatile and retains the warmth and coziness I expect from the R1 line. Its the perfect layering piece, took it one a trip to Peru and wore it in the jungle, the valley, and the city. Love it!

As a person that runs hot year round, I need to have breathable clothing for the autumn and winter months. In the end, I'm happy with it.

Would not recommend for climbing or any activity where the fabric will rub up against anything. Definitely a baggier fit than the old R1 hoodies. I'm 5ft3in, weigh 118 (on a good day) and considered to have an average length torso. My new favorite go-to layer
I love everything about this soft, light breathable layer. It is comfortable in a wide range of temps, and the fit is flattering. The only thing it might not be ideal for is bushwhacking, given that it has a wool sweater texture. Meaning it might snag and pick up a few pine needles more than a layer with a smoother finish.

Great fit, comfy except for the zipper
I'm so glad Patagonia is making XXS clothes for smaller women, unlike so many other companies. The fit is perfect for my petite frame. The R1 Air is a little more forgiving and so I find the zipper discomfort more tolerable, but I'm still not thrilled. Other than that, it's a great fleece.

The appearance of this jacket is very cute. I love the fleece pattern and I love that it's fitted. But I feel it truly is a size too small. I wear an XL so there's not much to go from there. I bought the men's version for my husband and he wouldn't wear it because it's too snug. It's also a lot thinner than I expected.... Read More I should have read more reviews because others have stated it. I love the Patagonia brand and this is not a bad fleece. It looks well made but it's absolutely not what I was looking for. So if you want a thin fleece that is very fitted, this fits the bill. If not, probably look for another product. I'd definitely size up though.
favorite go to jacket for cold runs
I have this jacket in a M and L. I bought the large size so I could layer it. I have worn this jacket in 19 degree cold weather (with two layers underneath) and it keeps me warm- especially the hood - nothing like having your cheeks warm while running. I love this jacket!
This is a perfect mid-layer for cooler days or I use it as a sweater right now. Super comfortable. I have also received many compliments when wearing. I got a small. It's perfect for a mid-layer. I'm 5'9" 140lbs so I find myself constantly between small and medium. This small fits great but snug. The sleeves are long enough thou... Read Moregh which is awesome!
I have Ben obsessed with wearing my R1! I even got my boyfriend the mens style! It would be PERFECT if it had thumb holes! When I layer over it it drives me nuts that the sleeves will get caught on other material and bunch up! Easy fix of course but still, details matter! It doesnt bother my boyfriend to not have thumb holes though, just a me thing... Read More! Super durable and warm! Hiking in MN and was almost too warm with it being in the 50/60s degrees F!
I love this jacket. Its lightweight, not too warm, but warm enough. I wear it inside, outside. Can wear a vest over it when colder. Although M is my normal size for fitted garments it is a bit more fitted than I would like, but the length and sleeve length are good so I know sizing up wont work. It has exactly the right amount of stretch. There are... Read More lots of pockets; 2 inside, 2 zipper outside however all this pocket space cant really be used with a fitted garment. I wish this jacket had all these good things, including the feminine fit with just a little more body/hip room. I like to use my pockets!
Functional & fun!
The length is great! Ive been using this layer when biking and its perfect for 50-60 degree east coast weather. I love the option of the hood when I bike and then go for a walk. The more durable material around the wrist makes me feel more comfortable wearing it when Im biking.
73 and sunny
This is the perfect shoulder season jacket (or layer for inside when it's not cold enough to turn on the heat). This jacket has been my go-to so far this fall, perfect with a puffy vest for the mornings (35 degrees) and by mid afternoon when it's 73 I toss it in my bag and forget it till the sun goes down. Looking forward to layering this... Read More more this winter once activities heat up and the temperature goes down!
Overall I really like this jacket. It is very lightweight yet warm. It does seem to be pilling on the sleeves a bit already, which is why I'm not giving it 5 stars. I have an R1 pullover from 2014 that I love and I like that material better. I do wish this jacket had thumb holes. I would say this runs a bit small. I wear a small in most brands... Read More but for Patagonia jackets I wear medium. This fits loose and I can wear shirts underneath. In the past the smalls have been too tight. I am 5'8 125lbs with narrow shoulders for reference.
I bought this in anticipation of a trip to Glacier and obviously the rest of life afterward. Ive been wearing it everyday since we got on a plane and its been great. I had an R1 years ago and ever since I got rid of it Ive missed it. Its a great layer that works well as an extra layer when its relatively warm and a warm layer when its cold. Very ha... The large was little tight around the hip area. So I tried the XL at the store & it was then too long. It had a weird cut. I actually like the contrast of the yellow zipper. But unfortunately, I had to return.
We're sorry this didn't work for you Maria. You might like our [Women's Capilene® Air Hoody](https://www.patagonia.com/product/womens-capilene-air-hoody/36505.html) as it's a warm base layer but a different styling.
In love with the Pockets
Love this piece. I've hiked to the top of 14ers to a walk around the block in it. Will also probably wear this backcouuntry skiing too because the interior pockets look like they can fit my skins! Surprised it is so form-fitting with 5 pockets (2 outside zipper, 2 inside and what I call the car key/Gu pocket on the chest). The color is fabulou... Read Mores and the hood is also a nice touch so it's one less thing for me to bring on a hike. I think I've worn this every day since I got it.
Soft, Lightweight, and Warm
This is a great hoody. It's softer on the skin than other technical hoodies or sweatshirts, and surprisingly warm given how little it weighs. I love the high neck and the color. Slim fit items tend to fit me well, and this one is true to size, except for the arms. Patagonia size M tops usually have arm lengths that work for me, but this one se... This jacket is going to get a lot of wear time this fall & winter! It is super comfy, warm and yet breathable. I am normally a Medium in Patagonia jackets but because of the 'slim fit' description I went with a large. Honestly, I could have gone with the medium for a more fitted feel but kept the large in case I wanted to layer a thic... Read Moreker long sleeve underneath the jacket. The arms on the large are generously long! I bought the black, which is a little softer charcoal black in person. Really love the style, quality and breathability. Can't wait for cooler weather!
This is great for cool-weather mountain biking. It keeps me warm but is super breathable, so I don't have to stop and shed layers. It is super functional, yet feels like a cozy sweater. I'm worried about its durability. The fuzzy exterior seems highly prone to pilling and getting snagged on trail-side branches. I was originally going to... Read More wait for different colors of the regular R1 zip up hoody (I would love to see chicory red!!), since it seems more durable, but I will try this out and see. The steller blue is brighter than expected, but I ended up loving the color even though I usually prefer wearing deep earth tones.
My new go-to cozy outfit
I am loving my new R1 Air full-zip hoody. I have two regular R1 full-zips, both in size Medium, but the R1 Air felt better in a Large, so I think it seems to run a little smaller than the regular R1's. It's super cozy and warm, love the high zip neck, but it's also breathable. I will say that the lower arm appears to be pilling a lit... Read Moretle bit, but I guess I don't really mind, but that might be one down side compared to the regular R1. 5'8" 160lb and the size large is perfect.
