With thermal Im the title and based on reviews I thought this shirt would be much warmer. Its only good as a base layer and needs additional layer to be warm in weather under 55 degrees. Also not a fan of the thumb band. Much prefer other brands for thumb holes that have sleeve cover hand. Returnee shirt

My 1st one (10 yr ago?) is a M and fits fine; but when I ordered my newest (last yr), a M was too big. This winter weight top is great for outdoor activities--snowshoeing, hiking, etc. Breathable and moisture wicking. Love the zip turtleneck--very versatile. For my height, sleeves and body are a bit long, but they work.
Want to love the top, but very inconsistent sizing

Because of the backorder delay, all of the smalls are sold out, so I can't exchange it.
I bought my first one in green and then my second one in blue because I liked the first one so much (purchased at REI). These are flattering and comfortable. I bought this as a gift for my daughter. She works on a dairy farm and is out in all kinds of weather. She shared with me that when she took it out of the box she thought to herself, "This shirt is so thin, there is no way this is going to keep me warm." It is now her go-to shirt for working on the farm.
Warm yet light weight. Stretchy so that you can move about freely and do activity comfortably. I would not rate this a warm base layer if worn alone.
The opening at the wrist is very wide. I am not a fan of using the elastic thumbholes, elastic Thumbholes are not comfortable. Would prefer a tighter fit at the wrist instead.

I bought this because I'm a fan of the Boralis Green color (and I like to be warm). I'm perpetually cold and my Patagonia layers are the only solution. More colors and patterns please. I wear this as the first layer on a daily basis. Perfect weight for traveling and every day. Breathes. Every day starts with this layer. Love the new color coordination. More please.
Really like this top. Fit isn't too tight. I would rate it as a relaxed fit instead of a slim fit. My big beef is that my zipper doesn't easily zip to the top. The shirt came with some fraying on the inside of the zipper, and the fraying interferes with the zipper. If it wasn't for this issue, I would be happy with the shirt.

I love this product! Would love to have another in more colors, like deep purple.
Love this layer. Very soft, breathes well. I use it for hiking and it's a good top layer for when it's in the 50s, and a good base layer when it's colder. It has small thumb straps I really like as well to keep it down on my arms/hands you can use.
Not only can this be comfortably worn in your sporting pursuits, but is perfectly acceptable for more formal engagements. The runways of fashion are at last getting the message.
Very disappointed. Returned shirt. It was not thermal weight as described. It had a bizarre alternating row design - a row of practically see through material and then a bumpy row of fleece. Guess they thought it was innovative and releases heat. Should be marketed as lightweight. Definitely not the shirt to be wearing under layers on Mount Washing... Read Moreton in the winter!

Whats with the darts
I loved the material and the color and was so happy with it until I tried it on. The darts made the whole fit very odd. Not a big busted woman. I returned it because of the darts.
This is a wonderful, warm base layer that I wear outside when I'm active (running, walking) and also around the house. It's thin, cuts the cold, and is just really comfortable. It's less precious than wool and was recommended to me by a Minnesota relative who has had several sets of these base layers for more than 20 years. What more... Read More could you want?
I got this shirt for Christmas - less than 3 months ago. I love how it fits, however I have not worn it more than 5 times and it already has 2 holes in it around the stomach area. It has been gently cared for and laundered properly. I expected more out of Patagonia and I am very disappointed in the quality of this shirt.

Light weight soft warmth
Light as a feather and warm. Waffely very soft fabric. Fits nicely thru body. First time Ive seen mini thumb loops which are fine and work when needed. Only thing Id change its a bit long for me to tuck in neatly and Im not short.
I expected this to be warmer. The material is nice and it is good when worn with 2 mid layers and an outer layer. But it does nothing on its own, wind blows right through it (even the slightest breeze)

I am a 73 yr old woman who walks/runs about 30 miles a week in Montana. This top is a perfect mid-layer for me but the sleeves are way too long. I usually wear a large (am a 42B bra size) but have to go to XL in your tops. Weird sizing.
I have worn it twice while skiing, by itself under a ski jacket and have stayed warm in 25-30 degrees F. Its comfortable, and not too constraining. It has thumb hole loops which are appreciated. It runs slightly large, and is definitely long enough to tuck into pants.
and it only comes off for laundering! I have worn this daily since Christmas! It is incredibly warm and deceptively light, never traps odor even after it has been slept in, night after night. It washes well and dries in a few minutes.
This garment has saved me so far, as I have a bad intolerance to the cold. I would buy this again in a minute!!!!
Love this shirt and just go my second one. Its light weight and really comfortable but still warm so good for running, hiking, biking or ski base layer.
I am 5'4 and wear a medium in pretty much everything. This jacket was way too long on me with long sleeves so I ended up returning it. Nice color though!

Warm, Great Three season shirt
I have a couple of these Thermal weight shirts. They are great for skiing on cold days. However, also great on rainy, windy, damp days in the spring and fall. Fit true to size. They wear well for many years. I wish Patagonia made them in some fun colors besides the boring colors they are known for.
I bought this shirt for a layer for hiking and skiing. Love the weight of the product, like the fit its long enough, not skimpy. Its also a flattering fit.
sadly, i can't wear the air/wool so am stuck with Capilene and this top changes annually, and not for the better. it no longer has the trim stitching under the torso, that gives you some definition of being a woman, comes in not so fun colors anymore, and also just runs baggy and super long. also XXS and XS were exactly the same when i tried t... I'm in NYC and have worn it out running as both a single layer and as a base layer depending on the weather conditions---temperature, rain, wind. The fabric does a fantastic job of wicking away sweat and keeping me warm and dry.
This Capilene shirt is instantly warming, soft and a Goldilocks fit....not too tight, not too loose. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because it needs help in the smelly department.
I have several of these. They do feel lighter than the mid-weight and are nice for layering. When I layer a thermal weight and a mid-weight (round neck), or vice versa, I am cozy either with or without a jacket, depending on the temperature. I quite like this base layer. It's very compressible yet warm. It has a very long torso, at least a few inches longer than previous years. The zipper is quite long which is great for temperature regulating. I ordered this item with the bottoms and found both to be very sheer, meant to be worn like long underwear, which I didn't need so I sent them both back. Nothing wrong with the shirt, but it was too light weight for me, needing to be worn with a heavy outer layer.

I have had the same merino wool under-layer for 20 years. It served me well- but was a bit too small at this stage in my mid 40s :) I love this one! It fits perfectly and is so comfortable, warm, but not too hot. For reference, I am 5'6" / 135 lbs. It hits below my hip; the sleeve length is a tad long, but I like that.
The cut is really weird, too wide in the chest area and narrow around the hips. Were they going for a raglan cut, or what? I have always been between a size S, or M if I wanted a looser fit. (I am 5.6 at 120 pounds). This top runs large and even size Small is wide around the chest. Returned.

What a fantastic shirt this is! I have a lot of medical issues that leave me extremely sensitive to cold. I am also unable to regulate temperature well, so I wanted to find a base layer that will keep me warm but won’t make me roast. This definitely fits the bill. And it fits! Not very happy with the half zipper. The material sags around the zipper making the collar poor fitting. The burgundy color is also very disappointing. Will not purchase a similar item again.

I absolutely love this top for cold weather. The waffle fleece inside traps the heat without the bulk of a heavier fleece. This top is very lightweight for how warm it is. Bought the pretty teal color looking to add to my collection of R.5s from a number of years ago... This is not the same. It is scratchy next to my skin. I treat myself to a new one every fall and his year was no exception; but expedition weight is no longer and its called "thermal weight" now. And it doesn't compare. I could not believe something so lightweight could be so warm! I bought these for an upcoming winter trip up the coast of Norway. I will be out on deck in the wind, and doing just a bit of dog sledding. Living in Michigan, I know what it's like to be out in the cold and wind. (Normally I'd be wearing a sweater and down parka). I actually stayed comfortable in this in 25 degree weather! When I got home, I stipped down to the base layer, and just lounged around. So comfy, I kept them on all night. I had tried other heavyweight base layers, but I found them too bulky under my clothes. I can't speak highly enough of these. They are amazing!
