I have some capilene shirts that are over 20 years old and they are still going strong. My only gripe with Patagonia is that they don’t make some of my favorites any more.
I'm a Northern Michigan golfer. Short season that this garment extends. First use was a 37 degree day. 3 layers...could swing and was never cold. My season may extended even further.
Lightweight, comfortable and warm. Great quality. A bit tight around the neck and I'm not a big person. But I still really like it.
Yes, the tags are annoying but they are easily removed.
Took me a while to decide to buy it but I had a trip where I needed to take less. This fit the bill and I found I'm wearing it all the time now. Can't recommend highly enough.
I wear my cool daily, long sleeve shirts frequently in the spring and fall. This capilene midweight fabric is spectacular. 3D weaving makes this piece Super warm for a midweight long sleeve. I wear it underneath my R1 1/4 zip for skiing all winter long. An absolute personal favorite.
The midweights have become my favorite base layer set. They are very comfortable and most importantly not itchy. The fabric is smooth and is easy to layer over as well as being attractive enough to wear on their own. Fantastic base layer.
Got this several years ago for running and I've put it through a lot. It's my go-to base layer for cold weather runs, hikes, XC skiing, or long backpacking/road trips. I really like the grid texture as it helps insulate during high activity but also wicks sweat away very well. Great in fair weather too.
I cant tell if I'm putting on a shirt or a washing machine instruction display. Really: do you need all these instructions woven into the seams of every thing you make? Great running shirt for shoulder seasons
I'm 5.8" 152 lbs and the small size fit great. This shirt is neither too tight or loose which makes it great for running. The sleeves weren't too long and moisture management is great. I wear this shirt standalone when temps are in the 40-50F range.
Excellent shirt & wonderful customer service. Was on sale for half price & I ordered two. Because the second one got stuck in delivery purgatory, Patagonia sent me the second free of charge. So I got one free. No where else would that happen? It's a rhetorical question. Have been buying Patagonia since before it was Patagonia and will ... Read Morecontinue to do so for the rest of my life. Unbelievable sturr. Best out there, hands down.
I love their midweight base layers. I Work in a factory setting that can fluctuate from really cold to hot. These are super comfy and work great in both conditions.
A little tight but i have broader shoulders and think it will become a little looser over time. Love the material though and can tell its high quality.
The length is good on the sleeves and chest.
I am a fan of Patagonia clothing, having used it for decades. It outlasts other brands and performs quite well. I am especially keen on their company ethic.
The model wearing the size medium is 6'1". So I got the small but it's way too tight in the armpits, and too tight in the upper arms as well, and a bit in the chest. It's too bad, I love the item but can't possibly wear it. I'm of average build, slightly broad.
Hi Ron! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We're sorry to hear the crew was too tight in the arms and chest. Great base layer
Comfortable and warm base layer. Use it mostly for skiing currently. True to size. Keeps you warm and manages heat/sweat well.
I don't have a single bad thing to say about this shirt. The fit is perfect for me. Not skin tight nor is it baggy. Sits just below my waist line. Oh and the hang loop is thumbs up.
Great, light base layer. I bought two and basically live in them with or without a second layer. I did expect it to provide more warmth, being described as a mid weight base layer, knocking off one star. Still, its a favorite, super comfortable garment.
I order one of these and I plan to add some more to add to my travel clothes. Great fit and was comfortable all day, it makes a great first layer to be warm in cooler months.
Fits well, breathes well. Thumb loops work perfectly when putting on the next layer's shirt. Crew neck is a nice change from the zip up version, I have multiple of both. Warmer than silk or tight poly. It's a must-have for me in cool to cold temps.
Hi John! Thank you for writing us a review. We're sorry to hear about the disapointment with the crew. Best Cold Weather Base Layer
Material and workmanship excellent and fit exactly true to size. Always great for cool to very cold weather.
I have two sets of the capilene mid weights(tops & bottoms). I find that I use them more than my merino base layers. I particularly like the odor control. The tops have a good sleeve & torso length, & stays tucked in. Very comfortable against the skin, & slides easily under layers. Dries quickly if wet from sweat. For the bottoms I ... Read Morelike the high waist, leg length is good. Overall a very nice base layer.
The cut is slim, the fabric is thin and not as substantial as previous iterations. I love the idea its from totally recycled materials but fear it wont last due to the flimsy nature of the fabric > talk to me in 5yrs, Ill tell ya how it does
I love this material. My favorite base layer. Knock off one star because of the three huge tags attached to the inside of the shirt at the waistline. It's like a mattress sized set of tags and Patagonia says they don't recommend cutting them off b/c it'll void the warranty!
I take blood thinners and seem to be cold much of the time. I wanted a lightweight inner layer that would be warm and comfortable. This shirt fits that description perfectly. My wife says that it washes well (doesn't dry it in the dryer, but it dries quickly). The price is a little high for an "undershirt" but hope it will hold up fo... Read Morer a few years!
Perfect next to skin layer, listed as midweight but feels lightweight. Great for high aerobic activities. Previous version I had was a bit short in length but this seems perfect.
Like the camo look , comfortable, warm without being too much so
Fit is good , which at 5foot 7 inches and 200 lbs , is not always easy . Sleeves fit well , I did not have to alter the garment. ( which I do if sleeves too loose ). Great for winter , soft material , good action fit , like the camo look .
I really don't know what I would wear day to day in Fall, Winter, and Spring if Cap Midweight Crews did not exist. If the weather or occasion dictates, I layer over them. Feels great against skin and terrific under a heavier pile item. I thought it would be heavier but am pleasantly surprised by the warmth - will be good for all around use. Normally a S or slim M, this is loose in slim M and a touch long.
This is warm and comfortable as you'd expect from most base layers. What makes this better? The thumb straps! The sleeves have little straps that go around your thumbs so as you're pulling on your other layers, the sleeves stay in place.
Used daily as baselayer for skiing. Usually with an R1 air as next layer. Often wear this combo for work too. Slim fit in large is perfect for me; love the thumb hooks for initial layering.
During the Michigan winters I like to typically wear two layers on my arms when in the house. The XL size fits my chest and waist fine, but is a bit too long in the arm length.
I like the fit, I'm 6'1" and I got the XXL so it would fit loosely and be easy to tuck in when layering. I also wear it casually as a comfortable shirt that is a little baggy and light weight.
Opening the package on this base layer Crew-Neck you can quickly tell it is shirt technically designed for warmth. It does not disappoint in the warmth category as a base layer. I am sure this shirt would meet/exceed most people's expectations for warmth. I would say the fit and comfort are better than expected. I am 168lbs but wearing a large... I wear this instead of a long sleeve T-shirt. It has a comfortable fit and offers warmth when needed. This garment has a wide temperature comfort range and provides warmth outdoors without overheating when I come inside. For me it is a perfect base layer
I have been wearing these shirts for decades. As a forester, hiker, backpacker, and climber, I have found that they outlast most other outdoor clothes and help maintain heat balance.

I used this as my base layer while camping and hiking in the Smokys. An awesome mid weight long sleeve. I will most likely get another in the near future.
I have been wearing Capilene for years. This new shirt is significantly improved. Patagonia has improved its sizing; I am 61, 175 lbs, and this shirt in large is perfect for me. The texture makes the shirt warmer and more comfortable. Patagonia is still the gold standard, and this shirt demonstrates why.
I've had numerous threads in the wrist hole openings come undone and pull out. Seems like the manufacturing on this product is extremely sus, just can't recommend Patagonia anymore the same way you could a few years back.
I first purchased one of these shirts to try it out and now have 3. Great baselayer - I like the thumb latches on the sleeves to keep the cuffs in the rights spot when putting a layer on over top . This shirt is a truly "fitted" fit. At 6'3"/193# the size L is a comfortable close fit. I wear it around the house and to work out. I love the Mid Weight Capilene fabric...it fits snug, soft against the skin. Great for strength training in the gym or wearing around the house/farm in cool weather. One pick...the fabric will snag on a rough edge and strands of fiber will loop. Cut the loop and you got yourself a hole. So great garment, but not tough as nails.
Wore the shirt and corresponding bottoms underneath blue jeans and a good heavy cotton long sleeve shirt and a light windbreaker to a 4 hour concert. Temperature was 50F. Very comfortable.
I really love the fit of the shirt, and it works well as a base layer. My main concern in only problem, is the fact that it gets runs and snags in it very easily and I have many holes in my shirts

Very Comfortable
I wear this underneath other shirts for extra warmth. I like the fit and feel. It has been good to have with me on camping trips and hiking.
This is THE long-sleeved shirt/layer that is my favorite! I use it as a Dynamic long-sleeve t shirt as well as the perfect layer for cooler seasons. The thumb handles to use under other layers are invaluable. Have all three colors. My favorite Patagonia item.
The most versatile piece of long sleeve under layer/ T-shirt Ive ever owned, seriously. Loved the original Green/Grey. The shirt does not absorb odor, yet keeps in warmth and moisture escapes perfectly. Liked so much order the grey and green shirts as well. Would not hesitate to recommend whatsoever
This material is soft, slightly thicker than a T-shirt, warm if under a shell or shirt. Smoother / thinner than Thermal weight.. so easier to slide under casual-wear layers . great shirt
I have not purchased a midweight for some time. I really like the newer fabric and weight, an great shirt when the R1 is more than you need.
The product is excellent; it fits well; high quality
I am very confident in all the products I have purchased over the many years. They work as advertised and are a good value
I usually wear L with all Patagonia (regular fit) Patagonia. All slim items- I size up! This one is a great piece and no difference. I ordered in xL and its awesome
I cant say enough about mid-weight Cap Crew! These are my pajamas, my go to first layer, and comfortable enough to wear from the 60s down to the frigid temps.
Im 63, 185 and have a slim/athletic build. The Large fits well. Sleeves are long enough though the body could perhaps be a bit longer for my height. The material is warm but also pretty thin for a mid weight piece. Works well as a base layer. Works well alone so long as there isnt a cool breeze - cuz its gonna cut right through it.
Purchased my last Capilene Midweight Crew ~10 years ago and loved it. This one is just as good, if not better. Expect to have this one for 10 years, too.
I like the slim fit and the thumb loops, for casual wear this makes it quite cozy even when worn by itself. As a baselayer it does great, used it with a Nano Puff when it was below 30 outside and was quite comfy.

I wish it came in more colors, love the versatility.
love the company and what they stand for. but everything here runs big. I'm 5'9", average build and usually wear a medium but I'm always a small with Patagonia. However, some smalls are tight at the armpits, like this one. Mediums are way too wide.
This is great feedback! The Midweight Crew is a slim fit, which is likely why it feels tight. Fantastic
Already love this shirt. Amazing technology. Runs a little tight as it should. Keeps you dry and warm but then doesnt make you sweat when you warm up. Highly recommend. Terrific quality. Designed extremely well.
I bought this same layer back in 2016/17. It's one of my favorite baselayers. Perfect fit, comfortable, looks good, and works for any season. I figured I should buy more since I like it so much. I bought this same layer back in 2016/2017 and it's one of my favorite layers. I decided to buy a couple more hoping it would be the same thing. Unfortunately it runs smaller than the other one. It's pretty tight around the armpit area. I'm only 160lbs so I'm not big. A medium shouldn't be this tight on me.
The fit is a tiny bit snug but in a good way. The feel of the fabric is very comfortable and the thumb loops make it nicer. I've been wearing it on and off alternating with the warmer weather capilene long sleeve.
From the first snow (Central Colorado) through June, this bad boy is on my body every day I'm outside in the hills.
Hot on the skintrack? Strip down to this, it looks fine. Sunny, but breezy up there at 12,000? Put it under the Pati Triolet shell, you're comfy. Mid-winter powder laps with a high of 5? Basically a requirement.
Nice addition to not having to wear outerwear like a jacket!
I have about five of these base layers....however, no matter when or where I shop I can't get a large in camo. The store where I shop or online is ALWAYS out of size large every since 2019.
this product is perfect i love the fit moves well when you move I have worn this shir tfor three mtb rides in damp cold pennsylvania fall daysthis month.
I like the warm of this but I wish it is more soft like merino wool blend. Also just like other patagonia cloths for me, small is a little too small and medium is too large.
I like this shirt! Fit, fabric and features are all good. The thumb loops are handy for layering without the sleeves pulling up.I did need to problem solve one issue. The shirt maintained a sour smell after washing. Pre soaking in 1 cup white vinegar before washing solved that problem.
I highly recommend this product if you are looking for a quality base layer. I frequently use this shirt for skiing and hiking. This is lighter than the product from last year but that makes it even more versatile in my opinion (and I have three of the 2019 version). The cuffs are not as loose. The shirt functions as a second skin, just awesome.
For whatever reason in the last year or two Patagonia has started putting 3 tags on the left side of the shirt near the waistline.
