Make it with thumb holes please!
I lived in this hoody for two weeks on the Continental Divide Trail gravel biking route, riding up and down the spine of the Rockies and sweating thru it multiple times / day. The material and functionality is phenomenal, I was always dry, it never smelled. Two items of feedback: 1) make it with thumb holes! I bought this so that I didn't ... Read Morehave to mess with sun sleeves every day, but because there were no thumb holes, I had to wear my arm sleeves as wrist guards to prevent sun burn on the skin gap until my cycling gloves begin. 2) the sizing of the hoody is VERY different from your equivalent Capilene daily long sleeve tshirt. I am now an L in your capilene daily long sleeve T, but an XL in the hoody (the L is skin-tight strangely) Make it with a thumb hole and no one will even consider the Outdoor Research Echo or Black Diamond Alpenglow ever again. Great product!
Perfect Light Hoodie
The hoodie fits me well at 6'2" and 250lbs. It has been the perfect item for the fall weather as layering becomes necessary again. Even better is how small it can compact when not in use. I'm even able to ball it up and stick it in my shorts' pocket when the sun comes out. I have not tested it below 50 degrees, but anything abov... Full sun protection, breathes easy
First wearing I wore it 4 days straight in the backcountry in Sierra, temps in the 80s, blazing sun. Kept me from burning - and overheating as it breathes easy - easier even than the Tropic Hoody I've long worn in sun spots. Great piece for high exertion at elevation
bought two, but they don't fit the same
One of the two that I bought fits perfectly. Sleeves are good length and there's a bit of room in the body so feels great while moving (biking, beach, hiking, etc.) There must have been cutting error with the other piece, because it feels like it's pulling across the chest while standing still, it's too tight, and the length is sho... Patagonia quality, but why?
I ordered the wrong product. I was looking for a hoodie that would get through a year or so as go to town wear, then turn into work wear. Which is inevitably what happens on a farm. This hoodie was nice but too light right out of the box. If you are okay with a cool casual hoodie that is not going to transition to crawling under the car at some poi... This long-sleeve shirt rocks it as work wear and everyday wear. It's made with a super abrasion proof fabric that will last through any job.
Ive got several of these, love them. The material is soft and silky, breathes well, and has a bit of stretch. Im 5 ft 11, 175 lbs, I can wear a medium or a large but the medium is a bit tight. The large is big enough that it allows airflow and it keeps you cooler. The hood goes well over a hat. Overall an excellent shirt!
Lightweight protection from sun, bugs
This shirt is a farmer's dream. After trying several other hooded sun shirts that either snag, stretch out, fray, or have loose stitching, I found Patagonia's version. It's beyond expectations - after a full season of use on my organic farm, it still looks new aside from a few farm related dirt and vegetable stains. The shirt fits ... Great sun hoodie
Im happy with how very lightweight, breathable and sun protective this shirt is. Ive only used it on two short backpacking trips but its holding up well and not very stinky as advertised. Breathable, lighweight, and comfortable.
I live on the coast and often it can be sunny hot, but with a cutting breeze that leaves one a little chilly. This layer is a great in between when you are active, but get hot quickly and a sweatshirt would be sweltering. Also, I am chonky dude and this fits decent.
I have had trouble recently with sizing with Patagonia. I have 30+ Patagonia pieces, and I have run into issues with the consistency of sizes. Great material and super comfy...but three silly design errors make this a loser unfit for purpose. The arms are too short and without thumb hoops for covering hands. The perfect summer shirt
My kids live in these in the summer and I finally got myself one. Keeps your arms and neck from getting burned but is also super light and airy. I'm not sure why it was changed, but the hood is smaller on this version of the capilene hoody. I love that as a long sleeved garment, it keeps me cooler that any other long sleeved top when I'm active on hot summer days. It fits me well in the shoulders and chest, but is long in the sleeves. Have worn it for a week or so everyday w/o washing.
If your skin does not like synthetics, this is not for you. Good fit, nice design, but an irritant to synthetic-sensitive skin. I applaud Patagonia's commitment to making synthetics sustainable, but they do not belong in products like clothing where alternatives are available.

This could be the best shirt I have honestly ever bought! The first one I purchased I wore every single day on a week long canoe trip on the Allagash. Perfect Sun Shirt
Lightweight, comfortable, and stylish, this sun shirt is perfect for the beach, park, or around town. It provides much needed protection from the sun for those long days outdoors. I especially like the fitted hood which protects the back of the neck and ears. Highly recommended for all outdoor endeavors.
Good, but room for improvements
I've tried more sun hoodies than I can count. From a comfort standpoint, the Capilene Cool hoodie fabric feels better than any others. But it has some shortcomings. Read Morelity to block sun along the anterior neck, lower face and under the chin-places that desperately need protection in the alpine and marine environments. I'd also really like to see a slightly longer back to prevent riding up, similar to the cut on the R1 fleece. A version with thumb loops or extension of the sleeves to the palms would also improve this shirt as a base layer for those environments. As a non-technical shirt, this is a great shirt in any of the forms, but would really love a more technical version, or some of the improvements (or in the least improve the hood). Also, as a preference thing, I would really love to see more light colors available and keep it free of large logos on the chest or back (one reason I didn't like the Tropic Comfort was the large logos)
Thank you for this feedback, James! We will share your thoughts with the appropriate team here.
I originally bought this for
I originally bought this for after surfing, which worked out great to stand around in the sun and watch the surf. Then I started using it for commuting to work on my mountain bike in the summer, and for the office when the air conditioning gets too cool. Its my first choice to grab since buying it. I also have an older grey shirt too.
Nice hoody but really wish these had thumb loops and a definitive UPF rating not just a UPF average rating of 34

The first step
Admitting I have a problem. I'm addicted to this shirt. I have three of them and will often pack an extra one on outings in case someone else gets cold. This has displaced my longtime favorite hoody as a go-to because of it's comfort, weight, and packability!
Love this hoodie, just what I needed
This is a great hoodie. As a personal trainer working in a very cold gym, this hoodie is a great layer to have on hand as you cool down. I also use this as a casual shirt. It's light, flexible, and warm. You won't be disappointed in having this in your gym bag, carry on when traveling and just laying around the house.
Damn near perfect shirt
I have 2 of these and they are just ideal. I bought them to replace a couple of well used (and smelly) synthetic shirts for hiking and working out. Great fit and comfortable
Last year a purchased a Tropic comfort hoodie. I loved it. But they got discontinued. This is really close and still really good. It doesn't have thumb holes or the hood button. The Tropic Comfort is still in good shape after a year of fairly heavy use. I have only worn the Cool Daily hoodie a few time so I can't speak on longevity.
Poor Fitting Shirt
The hood on this shirt is extremely small and offers no sun protection whatsoever. Had to return to Patagonia, just seems like there is very little consistently in their sizing at this point.
Hi Nels, thank you for sharing this feedback. We're sorry to hear this shirt didn't fit you right! This shirt was part of our UPF recall, when we discovered that some of our UPF styles didn't have the level of protection we had believed they did. Still good sun protection, but not the 50+ UPF we had anticipated. We're glad you got this one returned and refunded.
Lightweight, protective and comfortable
I love that this shirt is lightweight and cool and gives some shade from the sun on a hot day. Great fit, you stay comfy as hell (unless you wear an undershirt, then youll get warm), and just so soft. No kidding, this is a steal. Tight around my neck
I was hoping the hoodie would be good to protect me from the sun rays on warm days. Unfortunately it keeps me too hot and is tight in the neck. I do like it on cool mornings but I think I might have to add a zipper in the neck so it doesnt choke me. I have a normal neck size for a 5 11 man.
Thank you for submitting this review, Zachary. We're sorry to hear this hoody is uncomfortable for you! Given how light this fabric is you may not want to try adding a zipper. Great fit, but hood needs modification for running/hiking.
Great fit, super soft and comfortable! Only problem is the hood needs a either elastic around the edge or a snap closure at the neck to make it snug enough that it is viable/stays on if you are using it for running or even hiking when there is any sort of wind. I just bought a pearl snap kit and put one in myself and it works great now!

I'd buy another if the sleeves were long enough. The medium is cut for 5'10'' fit person... I'm 5'11 with long arms so the sleeves are a tad short and it is a little snug, but that will improve when I get into better shape. Patagonia's fit has just not been consistent for me lately.
Go to pullover
I have three of these in different colors. This hoody is perfect for fall soccer games, summer beach trip evenings, and spring hikes. The fabric is soft, wicks well, and layers without bunching. Contrary to some reviews, I did not have any shrinking and found the fit true to size.
Great but still smells
I have bought 5 of these garments and will most certainly buy more. They are great in the sun nut they are not odor proof at all and hold the funk more than cotton or wool. I do allot of whitewater multi day trips and after a few days the garment stinks and just like in the old days of poly pro, it holds that funk smell that you cannot wash out.
Lightweight and Comfortable
At 5'7, 160 lbs I think this hoody's sizing is great! I have good range of motion when working out and the material is both comfortable and breathable. Don't sleep on the turquoise color as I think it's quite unique and bright enough to make you stand out in the sea of grays and blacks.
Basically perfect, minor issues
I love this shirt so much I can't believe I never wrote a review for it. I've worn it to hike numerous 13,000ft peaks, and really put it through the wringer as my only shirt on a three-day, 30-mile trip backpacking the north rim of Yosemite valley. It does a fantastic job wicking sweat and kept me dry all day, and even after three days of me sweating in it it didn't smell disgusting. Unless you happen to get a lemon, it should perform exactly how it's supposed to. It's also a great fall base layer under a jacket. I own two, and bought one for my girlfriend, her sister, and her mom. For casual use, you won't find a more comfortable shirt to lounge around in either. My only criticism: it could DEFINITELY use some thumb loops. That's the only bummer. And one last observation: it's perfect for dry climates, but I wore it in North Carolina in high humidity and it clung to me, so manage your performance expectations according to your climate.
Soft and comfortable but sleeves are short and a little tight under the arms. My last tropic hoody was a large and I was "swimming" in it so I went for a medium. Nice product but sizing is not great for me. Probably should have gotten a large.
