Nice pack. I just used it for the first time on a birding trip to the outer banks. Not crazy about the front vertical pocket but I guess that it is meant for quick access for documents , etc. It does not have a top lined pocket for sunglasses which I think is a big miss. Otherwise, it was comfortable and fit everything I needed for daytrips out in ... Read Morethe field.
I love all of the padding on the backpack. I am 57 and it sits nicely on my back. Love all of the pockets in to. Great way to be organized!! Will definitely be purchasing another soon;)
The backpack is a perfect size for multiple use. Great for work, weekend trips and daily hikes. It fits snug on the shoulders and is stable on hikes.
The computer and tablet sleeve are well padded. The two spaces available are well designed for multiple use.
Don't know if I can critique this backpack at all. It works so, so well for everyday use. Water bottle pockets work well, laptop sleeve works well, it's a good size. Would recommend. Only suggestion: put nametags into the backpacks to encourage sense of ownership!
I ordered this backpack for my significant other for Christmas. The one he was using for work was falling apart and I LOVE my Patagonia backpack. He is so excited to start using it since he has seen how well mine has stood up over time!
Solid bag but lost key features of previous version
I had a circa 2010 version of this bag and absolutely loved it for a multipurpose work/commute/recreation bag until my son claimed it as his school backpack. Some of the buckles failed and when it could not be repaired Patagonia very kindly replaced it with the new version. I like the new bag well enough and it serves its purpose for bike commuting... Read More with my 15 inch macbook. It is sleek, simple, and discrete, especially in the black color. The fit and carry are great. I like that the compression strap goes over the mouth of a water bottle in the side external pocket to hold the bottle in securely. I agree with other comments that it feels smaller capacity wise than 28L.
My main complaint about the bag, especially relative to the previous version, are related to useful design features that were eliminated. First, Patagonia eliminated the top, soft lined stash pocket for quick access to sunglasses, keys, a pen, etc. My last bag, the Osprey Quasar had a similar pocket along with the earlier Refugio and I always used it. It is so convenient. Instead, there's an awkward vertical pocket at the front of the bag, which is a carry over from the older Refugio. This is not super functional because of the shape and I would not put anything in important in there for fear the zipper would slide down exposing items to slipping out. Secondly, the internal organization is lacking. In the main pocket, there's a laptop sleeve that works perfect for my Macbook. On the outside of the laptop sleeve, there's a document sleeve that's only half depth, which doesn't make sense to me. It's not deep enough to protect papers from getting rumpled, so I don't get the purpose. There's a smaller, secondary compartment vertically in front of the main compartment. This is pocket has two smallish organization pockets on the divider panel. The older version has more small pockets up and down the divider panel for biz cards, cords, chargers, pens, storage devices, granola bar, etc., that prevents items from getting lost in the bottom of the bag.
Again, the bag works well and I am sure some like that it is streamlined, but items that were eliminated doesn't change the shape or bulk of the bag. And, the elimination of the organizational features makes it less user friendly than the previous version, at least for a working/commuting purpose.
I bought this backpack for my dad. He is a teacher and now uses it every day. Hes also really excited to use it as his personal item when he travels internationally. Now I want one for myself!
I purchased this item after I learned it was the default backpack in Facebook.
The materials are high quality and it is well made.
However, it is smaller than it looks like. If you look closely at the picture, there is almost no distance between the back and the first zipper, this means that pocket (which is the main one)

Overall, I can fit my laptop, a tupperware with my lunch, but if I want to include my noise-cancelling headphones I need to stack it on top of the tupperware. No extra space for a sweater.
Finally, while the outside pouches for bottles are high quality as well, they tuck inside, meaning the subtract even more from the space of the backpack.

Have worked in the industry for 25 years. Rolled through plenty of packs in that time. The ones that stand up to the abuse are always Patagonia. Same with the base layers/mid layers I wear. Comfortable and roomy
Great backpack for school and for every day use. Good pockets with different sizes. Fits binders and laptop.

Generally love this backpack- I use it for school and I occasionally take it to work. It's worked great for the 2 years I've had it- but every time it gets even slightly wet, the inside of the bag is soaked: not great for someone who lives in a rainy place. Other than that, would recommend!

Sturdy backpack
Nice looking, sturdy backpack. Good for school or camping.
Very simple yet stylish backpack. I use this for school and work and it fits all my material! Also luckily very easy to clean/disinfect since I work in the medical field!
This Patagonia backpack is replacing an Osprey backpack Ive had for quite a while. Finding one that fits right is a challenge. This backpack fits well and holds all I want to carry for the day.
Love the organization of this super comfy pack. Its sized right for a full day at the office or a day pack for travel with lots of room and great organization. Maybe the best casual daypack I've ever owned!
This is a replacement for one that was stolen. I looked at a lot of packs and this was by far the best. This backpack is pretty much perfect for day trips. Fits a change of clothes, the water bottle side pockets are sufficiently deep that your bottles wont fall out, and the backpack is super light.
I like the design and color a lot; however the comfort level is less than my expectation. Especially it causes shoulder pain even after a short period of carrying the bag. I suggest anatomy team to work a little more on this.
This pack reminds me of a classic school pack: great space for laptop, books, lunch and water bottle.....and an outside pouch for masks.
It's also comfortable enough for short day hikes and explorations with the family
I love this pack. I tend to use this as my everyday, commuter bag. The water bottle pockets are fantastic, I can fit my 32 oz bottle with no issues. The zipper on the very front of the bag is perfect for stashing a light jacket.
Great backpack, just the right size. Laptop pocket has a clip, keeps it snug. Plenty of space for a day hike or ultralight 2-3 day. Only wish it had a couple of pen pockets stitched in to the utility pouch in the middle compartment.

I can fit a wide reusable water bottle in there easily and there is a strap there for taller bottles/to thin out the bag. The chest clasp is good too. It doesnt feel like itll snap off. I feel like the overall fabric quality is heavy duty and the stitching looks like it will last. The zipper work well. Super happy with my purchase.

Its been a few weeks now of use and Im pretty happy with this product. The back compartment is a bit confusing, but other than that its a very good backpack!
If you have a wide neck and or shoulders I can not recommend this pack. Digs into the sides of my neck and makes it very uncomfortable for long wear. Other than that the pack performs as expected. Just make sure its not too small for you before buying

Perfect for work/travel
Bought this backpack to carry my laptop and use for when I travel. It has gone above and beyond my expectations. It carries my laptop and all my electronic with ease and isn't big and bulky like most other laptop bags I have tried. I appreciate the durable water bottle pockets on both sides. Great pack!

And there's a third zipped outer compartment that's great for keys, wallets and anything else you want to get to quickly.
But I think my favorite feature are the two side pouches. These are both deep and capable of securing pretty much any size cup or bottle. I carry a 20 oz. insulated coffee mug and a 30 oz. insulated mug for iced tea/water. Both slide into those pouches and are held securely. I know there's a women's version available which may address these concerns in their design. I'm really happy with the pack and highly recommend.
I love this bag - tons of space for textbooks, notebooks, etc. and love the color! I would give it 5 stars but the laptop compartment is not as secure as in north face bags ive had!
Still a great backpack, but subtle changes removed some nice features that were included on my older version. The new version doesn’t have the cloth top pocket for glasses.
This is only the second backpack that I've owned in 10 years. I bought a Patagonia backpack about 10 years ago and it has lasted through 8 years of school, handfuls of adventures, and is now hanging on my wall covered in patches from all the places it has seen. If you're looking for a reliable backpack that can be used for any adventure i... Read Moren years to come, then this is the only backpack that I would recommend.
Great laptop bag/work bag. Have traveled with it once and been my day to day go to for several weeks now. Really like it. Can be a bit noisy but overall very good.
Currently using this for short work trips - large enough for laptop and overnight stuff and great for plane travel. Will shortly be using on first vacation so more air travel then pack for hiking. Looks great too.
Not enough little pockets and should have a full padded laptop sleeve
It looks nice and works fine. I wish it had some of those skinny pockets for pens, that would be a helpful little feature. But my main problem is that the laptop sleeve covers about 2/3 of my 15” MacBook, leaving about 1/3 exposed where it could get scratched when you pull other things in and out of the pack. It would be great if they added a few i... Read Morenches of the sleeve so the entire laptop is protected when it’s in there. Right now I have an additional separate laptop sleeve in there to keep it all padded. Kind of annoying.
Loved it! Very versatile. Wore it everyday while traveling throughout Paris, stuffed it with 1.5l water bottle on each side and had our jacket and sweaters, etc....inside and snacks. Loved it, the finish has a nice sheen to it which I like. Don’t know how waterproof it is because it only lightly sprinkled on my trip. I highly recommend it.
I got this backpack for field work to carry my ruggedized tablet and cords in. It works great! Side pockets work well for a water bottle on one side and sunscreen on the other!
I love this backpack but the only bad part is that it completely ruins the lower back of my jackets and shirts. I can’t completely give it a 1 Star bc it’s a decent backpack size and stuff but Honestly I would stop using it if it wasn’t the only backpack I own.
I really loved this backpack at first for work. The design/look, space, pockets. A great balanced set up for the price. Read few reviews stating that it ruined some of their clothing. This is a fine backpack for most normal uses, but if you are looking for a bag that will protect what you're carrying from heavy rain this is not your best bet. Highly encouraged by sheer ownership, and the discreet logo being almost hidden enough to make me wonder, I looked up this company (Patagonia) to see what else they made...

Read Moreus business I was in, and thank you Lord, I'm on my way to opening a bike shop soon, and I'll be using this backpack for my daily commute. (Riding a bike with a hard, square, briefcase while wearing a suit?!) I own several backpacks but this is my favorite to get to use, being lightweight, yet holding alot, and also being comfortable to wear. Summer or winter, this pack seems to be a great choice for riding. It has two huge side mesh pockets w elastic for drinks/gloves/tools/snacks/ whatever. The front vertical zip pocket is different, but large enough to be easily utilized.. For me, it became the perfect spot for my rather large JBL Charge 3 bluetooth speaker so that I could play it while riding, yet be able to hear it, access it easily, and not be vulnerable to theft, damage, etc.
This pack seems to be feather-lite when empty and almost unnoticeable to wear, yet holds an amazing amount of stuff when it's packed,
I use this pack as an everyday utilitarian pack, beach, work, weekend trips. I like the shape. It feels slightly taller and less wide than some other packs I’ve had. The vertical outer pocket is convienent for accessing regular items like keys of boarding passes.

I got this back back in 2016, and it has been working great for me ever since. I usually have to get a new backpack every year but ever since I got this one, I have been saving a lot of money. I was super excited to get my Refugio 28L because my sister has one from Spring 2017. I hope to see the Refugio's updated exterior matched with a few of the features that made the older Refugios incredible backpacks.
I used to have the older version of the refugio backpack. It broke and I replaced it with this new version. I have to say that I much prefer my old backpack. This one just doesn't live up. I have waited 2 months before writing the review to make sure I get it right. This pack is a very good airport travel pack. The other con is there is no small top zip like my last Patagonia pack so wallet/keys etc get thrown into the cavern
Bought for myself during the Christmas, amazing size but my only problem is that the breathable mesh on one of the straps is becoming undone. It's causes a poking, scratchy feeling when wearing a short sleeve tee with the bag.
I read other reviews about this but thought they were maybe odd situations. Nope. Has already ruined a hoodie and a tshirt that I loved. I needed something light and available for commuting. Found just what I needed in the 28L. Our Rock Creek store didn't have a variety of colors to choose from (I ended up with the red pack) but it still serves its purpose.
This was a requested Christmas gift. I loved the look and design of it. However,my main issue is the placement and design of the water bottle pockets. It's almost impossible to get a water bottle in there while you are wearing the bag,if there is anything inside the bag. I have to ask for help putting in my water bottle. I did not have this issue with my old one.
I bought this backpack a month ago and was very excited for my first Patagonia product! It's an awesome design but ruins every type of material I own. I perused the store for a bit more when one of the employees came up to me and asked how attached I was to the bag. Slightly confused,I said not at all,and he told me they'd just take the bag off my hands now and give me the brand new model!
