In the crowded daypack market, the Terrarvia offers impressive, innovative, refined, and modern design, materials, and details. Carries well, is compact and sturdy, yet not overbuilt. I got a black one, to show cat hair, but would prefer getting back to '80s colors (purples).
Lacks versatility; you shouldn't need both a 'hiking'... Read More; pack and a 'climbing' pack. This seems to go against the Chouinard design philosophy. A proper pack requires a dedicated ice axe loop, and 2 exterior lash points for a rope, sodden gear, and/or pad. Big exterior stretchy pockets are a great modern convenience, but are incomplete.
I really appreciate the size-appropriate hardware and fasteners; very nice! The Regulator® airmesh shoulder straps and hip belt are superb (!) and comfy. However, the inability to unthread the shoulder and hip straps through the buckles seems a proprietary design move taken from the tech industry.
Hip pockets are stylish and streamlined, but too small for modern electronic communication/navigation/photographation devices.
This pack is a great size for day hikes, light overnights, and travel. It's light, well made, and incredibly comfortable. I only wish the lid construction was different. It's integrated into the body of the pack and I'm finding it reduces access to the pack body unless it's been emptied; it's hard to get into if the pack is... Read More full, and it doesn't cover the opening of the pack as fully or securely as a typical lid on a top-loading pack. The overall body construction and comfort makes it still my top pick pack, but that makes me just that much sadder that the lid's design isn't ideal.
It is a great bag, and I love the outside clip on features where I could put my hiking poles or put a carabiner on and it would be able to hold more items. However, I assumed I would fit a size small because I am 5'3", but the hip straps were sitting on my waist, and everytime I adjust it, the shoulder straps would feel weird. I just can&... Hi Megan, thank you for submitting this review. We're sorry the fit of this pack has been frustrating for you! It's possible that your torso is longer, in proportion to the rest of your body; a larger pack might actually fit you better. You can find some guidelines for measuring your torso for a pack in our Size Guide under "Fit" [here](https://www.patagonia.com/product/terravia-pack-28-liters/195699686304.html). Great quality and functionality
Great quality and functionality for this light weight backpack.
The pack is great! It feels comfy on back and is not overbearing. The space inside is sufficient for my lead climbing kit and bouldering stuff. If I had one critique, it would be that my gym rope can't sit on top of the pack, underneath the lid like other packs. Perhaps (as is usually the case) this is use error? All in all, a solid everyday p... Read Moreack.
I bought this pack to replace two other backpacks for day hikes and for the few days I went into work. I love it! Simple, not overbuilt. Does exactly what I need it to do. I recently used it tightened down while mountain biking and it moved with me for miles. And the fabric did well when it was wet out without the rain cover.
Recently purchased this pack in a size large (color: noble grey) to use primarily for day hiking, snowshoeing, and for carrying extra gear (layers, food, etc.) on fly fishing trips.
Overall, this is a nice looking lightweight 28L pack for daylong adventures where you need or might want to carry extra gear. The quality of the pack is what you'... Read More;d expect from Patagonia, but the pack design could be substantially improved with a few minimal but important changes to make it much more functional.
This pack really seems to shine in terms of function and comfort when keeping the weight low, with around 15lbs or less being the sweet spot for all-day comfort if you're racking up higher miles on the trail. Beyond that, even with efficient organization of gear, the pack becomes noticeably uncomfortable and somewhat fatiguing, putting too much of the weight on the shoulders due to the lack of load adjusters on the shoulder straps.
Main pros: Quality, durable materials; slim design that sits well on the hips, back, and shoulders; plenty of storage options and space within the main compartment, the lid, and the elastic stretch pockets along the outside of the pack; includes a rain cover that stores conveniently on the bottom underside of the pack with a velcro closure that's quick to access when needed; the pack is hydration compatible; also, I really like the noble grey color and the overall simplicity of the pack.
The cons and what needs to be added/improved: The pack needs load lifter straps to help dial the fit and comfort when carrying heavier or bulky loads. These are featured on the larger 36L version of the pack but why they weren't included on the 28L is a big downside that limits the packs comfort and versatility. It also makes this pack less ideal for hiking or scrabbling across unstable terrain because of how the weight can't be adequately centered on your hips for more stability. Another issue is that the mesh hip belt pockets are too small and constricting making them nearly unusable except for very small items that can flex/bend with your hips (e.g., a Buff or bandana, protein bar). A modern smart phone, GPS unit, folded map, or much else will not fit in the hip belt pockets. The mesh pockets need to be larger and be capable of expanding outward from the hips in order to accommodate larger items that can be easily accessed while hiking on the move.
Despite these issues, the pack meets my current need for being a good enough pack for most daylong adventures where carrying a heavy load isn't needed. If the next iteration of the pack improves the weight distribution capabilities and the functionality of the hip belt pockets, the pack would be a much better value in my opinion.
No frills, but none needed. Feels really solid so far. Perfect size for a day pack/overnight bag that can do both depending on how efficiently you pack. Rain cover is handy too.
Overall, this is a good, straight-forward daypack. Gets the job done. The side pockets are a little loose and dont have straps to cinch water bottles or bear spray in, so when you bend over things can fall out. I have yet to find a day pack with a good system for holding bear spray but will keep searching!
the bag felt great, I went on a nice 4.5 mile hike and had it packed full and it felt so much lighter on my back than it actually was. it was super comfortable, which was surprising because I packed way more than I needed
This is my favorite technical Patagonia backpack I have had. Minimalist design with a hug-your-body comfortable fit that I am happy does not include an internal frame. Super comfortable for all-day wear with beefy fabric that you don't have to worry about scraping on rocks. Designed so you can stuff it full or keep it mostly empty without losi... I did a lot of research figuring out what I wanted in my first day bag for hiking. Went with a friend on a 7 hour hike and this carried everything we needed! It felt light on my back and it was a great investment
This pack looked like it checked all the boxes for what I wanted for in a day-plus pack. However, the good design was poorly executed. Of the 7 external pockets only 1 is truly functional. The "fame sheet" is a joke and might as well not be be there and offers no suspension. Since the back panel does not support weight (it crumples when l... Light, efficient, stylish, functional
This pack is very spacious and strikes a balance between pockets for organization and space for larger gear and clothes. Even when it is not full, the pack cinches down nicely and fits comfortably. There are lots of straps on the outside for hooking in hiking poles or other gear. My favorite feature is the built in rain cover, genius!

All in all a great pack, functional, and my go-to for days on the trail.
Thanks so much for your thoughtful and detailed feedback on this relatively new line of packs. We appreciate it, Luke!

Great pack
Very comfortable and roomy pack. Great for serious hiking or taking to the farmers market. One thing I can't figure out is how a water bladder integrates with the pack- there is a pocket for it inside, but no holes for the tube.
I was looking for a simple, light weight pack that I could use for daily use on the Camino de Santiago, and this pack is it. The Altiva is the perfect balance between size and weight with enough room for all the essentials, while still having the small essentials that make this pack work day after day. The special bonus is the built-in rain cover.
Got this pack since I wanted a more hiking-specific backpack and loved the previous generation of the Ascensionist. There are a lot of similarities between the two packs, including how svelte they are, how simple (in a good way) they are and also how durable they are. I took the Altvia on a 10-day trip through Oregon, lugging daily necessities for ... Read Moretwo adults and a 4-year-old on city days but also on long days in the Mt. Hood Wilderness and along the Oregon coast. Its held up great and been a great companion and honestly a hell of a lot more comfortable than my Refugio.
The one little annoyance I had was the lack of compression down the main compartment of the backpack. Or maybe its just how the pocket itself is attached to the backpack body: Since the top brain pocket is pretty massive, if you fill even half of it and dont have the main compartment of the pack filled, the foam sheet begins to bend into your back. If you just toss a puffy or fleece to eat up volume in there, though, its perfect.
I love this pack! It is super versatile where I can take it skinning, use it for work, and everything in between. It fits everything I need and the hip pockets are super helpful. They're not big enough for a phone but they fit my keys, headphones, and a couple masks with no problem.
This is an excellent all around pack for skiing and hiking. The top lid/closure system takes some getting used to, but is actually quite efficient and expandable. The waist belt is appreciated for skiing and the waist pockets are adequate, if not slightly small.
