Fantastic everyday and travel companion
I've been looking at this bag for years and finally bit the bullet, ordering the black colorway. This bag is the perfect layout for a commuter day bag, flight bag, or weekender road trip bag. And being made out of recycled TPU, it’s durability will never fail either.
Clumsy & not practical
I bought the smaller version of this travel pack-the 35L. It was too small for 3-4 weeks of galavanting. Thought this might work. Its way too big for me. Hi Jane, thank you for providing this review. The MLC comes in two sizes: the larger 45L and this smaller 30L. We're sorry the 30L was too big and too tech-focused for you. I chose the Patagonia Black Hole Mini MLC 30L after an intense benchmark study of all the sustainable backpacks on the market that could be used for travel and short hikes alike. Trusting the Patagonia quality, I feel like I will never need any other backpack in my life. Best investment ever!
Hi, This has been one of my favorite bags and perfect when coupled with the rolling duffel for travel. My only knock is the top zipper pocket opens up not down when attached to the rolling duffel allowing your valuables, gear, accessories etc to fall out. Perfect carry-on or weekend bag
The description sums it up - the perfect carry-on bag for traveling. If fits under the seat in front of you, meaning it pairs well with the 45L version (which fits in the overhead), or a roller bag. If you take a lot with you on work days, it also looks great to use for commuting.
Computer Sleeve in Wrong Place
I like this bag, but the computer "sleeve" should be towards the back of the pack, not the front. If I have it loaded towards the front of the pack and it falls, its likely to be damaged. It also makes it unbalanced when slid over the handle of the Black Hole Luggage.
Hi Scot, thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We're sorry to hear about the disapointment with the laptop sleeve placement. I adore this backpack. The upgrade in size from the last model helps me fit everything I need for the gym and a work day. The compartments are sensible and easy to navigate, and the lack of front pockets gives a far more streamlined look. Straps are comfy and the adjustable connector makes it easy to find what works for you. Great product.

Great Travel Pack - Liked Pink Evening Mauve

I never reach down and get things out of my pack anyways, I'll use one of the ultralight bags for things I would want in transit. If your water bottle is small enough, it doesn't fall out in messenger carry. The only thing I'm not in love with is the top center pocket I like it but it cuts into the middle of the bag and it seems like it might be kind of annoying to pack around or shove things in. If it was placed a little further back by the tech, I think it would be more efficient, but not a huge deal. I can fit a small TSA bag and my passport in it. My husband was jealous. :)

I was able to buy on in Mauve for my wife from Patogonia and after a long search found one in Smolder Blue at a sporting good store for myself. The shoulder straps are comfortable, the hip belt works well as long as your bear in mind this is supposed to be a lightweight pack so it just holds the pack on you and is not intended to transfer weight from your shoulders. But it also converts in a very easy and slick way to a shoulder strap. I packed everything I mentioned above and more in it and ended up under 15 pounds total. The previous version was able to fit the "personal item" requirements for international air travel. Adding 4 inches to the length of this, means it's too big. VERY disappointed. Just about perfect
This bag is excellent. I have another 30L bag from another company that has a very poor layout, so I was wary of getting a similarly sized bag. This bag, however is extremely well thought out and capable of carrying everything I need and then some. The flat open option is also extremely helpful.
Great carry on bag
Bought this for my carry on bag. If using this in combination with a roller carry on, its a little overkill, a smaller backpack may suit better. This could hold everything you need for a 3 day trip but not much more in my opinion, and I use packing cubes so Im pretty efficient.

The straps are comfortable, and the backpack mode doesn't feel like an afterthought. I like that the bag keeps it shape when NOT full. I also appreciate the very deep water-bottle sleeve on the outside. Admittedly, I don't use this for a bottle, but to quickly drop items in. The depth makes me feel very comfortable that they won't fall out. Negatives: 99% of the time I don't use the mesh cover over the main compartment. I cannot believe how much I can fit into this pack! I love the organization features - everything has its place and I'm not having to pull everything out to grab something at the bottom of the pack. The laptop section is perfect for my work business trips. I'd definitely recommend this bag.
I've been on the prowl for a well-designed laptop travel bag for some time. Complicating the search, I travel with a 17-inch laptop, which most designs do not accommodate. I adore this bag!
I adore this bag! It is comfortable as a backpack or messenger-style bag, with easy access to the main compartment. Holds an amazing amount, in true Black Hole style. I took it recently on a four-day roadtrip when I challenged myself to pack in this single pack, practicing for future air travel in Europe with strict carryon requirements. The bag he... Read Moreld multiple packing cubes (the new MLC cubes are great in it) plus an extra pair of shoes, a 15 laptop and its paraphernalia (the laptop sitting against my bag when worn as a backpack, keeping that weight close to my body), and a toiletries bag. Such an easy carry as a backpack! I should note, at first I had thought the shoulder strap was missing, not realizing how the waist strap converts to the shoulder strap for a messenger-style carry. So handy, and saves weight! The product description has since been updated to clarify this process. At this size the lack of compression straps is not such a big deal. My only criticisms would be a) the waist/shoulder strap could be maybe 3-4 longer to allow for a more comfortable cross-body carry, and b) when the bag is carried as a messenger bag or by the side handle the water bottle sleeve is on the bottom, so you have to remember to remove any contents. All in all, really a hit!
20inch dimension is TOO BIG AS PERSONAL ITEM
No airline allows a 20inch personal item. Huge design flaw when the mini is designed for personal item size Other big flaw compared to the competitors are there arent any straps to compact the backpack which doubles down on my main callout on personal item size
The Mini MLC is designed to be a carry-on bag, rather than a personal (under-seat) item. At 20" x 12" x 7" it meets even strict carry-on requirements (though we always recommend you check with your specific airline, as requirements change). We're sorry if this bag was not what you were looking for. If you haven't done so already, we'll be happy to help you [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) it. If you're looking for a personal item, you might take a look at our sling packs, most of which fit those requirements for most airlines. Compartments, accessibility, versatility and a water bottle holder, Yes!
Compartments, accessibility, versatility and a water bottle holder, Yes! This is a great pack, and could easily hold 3 days worth of clothing, I travel for work sometimes overnight, or maybe up to 4 days. I can pack that into the MLC 26L. The new MLC 45L strangely and sadly doesn't have a water bottle pocket / holder, why Patagonia?
Great one bag option
Great bag, I have really used my MLC 45 alot but needed something smaller to fit 1-3 day trips. This is perfect, though mine came without the shoulder strap shown so beware of that. It is just easier to have one bag for your laptop/notepad/etc and all your clothes. Less hassle, no worries if there is no overhead space. Everything is very accessible... Read More. Excellent carryon bag for travel
I really like this bag for traveling light or paired with my 45l black hole roller. Just got back from 2 weeks in Europe and everything fit well and stayed organized. This is the ideal bag for me where Patagonia proves they are not standing still in the competitive bag game.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 26L bag
My son has purchased two of these bags and loves them so I bought one. The black hole material is different then the typical black hole material. I am assuming it will be same or better quality and have the endurance as the old fabric. It looks great and is very versatile and holds a lot of items. I highly recommend it!

This is a great bag, and I really like the redesign with the added water bottle pocket. Checks All My Boxes (and there are a lot of them)
I have been looking for 4 years for the perfect airline under seat travel bag (I have gone through too many brands to list). I have a pretty long list of requirements: - Needs to bump right up against the size limits for an airline under seat bag (typically a 22-26 liter bag) to get as much usable storage space as possible for 2-3 day trips. - Op... Read Moreens up like a suitcase... top loading just does not work well for an overnight/travel bag. - Handles for suitcase style carrying. Handles cannot get in the way of opening the main compartments of the bag. Handles for both Horizontal and Vertical carry. - Shoulder strap for carrying like a messenger bag. - Be able to carry like a backpack, and able to stow away the backpack straps when not in use. - Small outer pocket for easy access to things like a phone or passport. - Luggage passthrough so it can be used with my carry-on luggage. - Easy laptop access for going through TSA. - Minimalist design... not lots of external compression straps, daisy straps, etc. - Waist strap that can be removed. I will be using this for light travel, not backpacking, and I find a waist strap useless for my purposes. - Some padding for when the bag is used in backpack mode, but not so intrusive that it looks silly when the bag is used like a messenger bag. - Bag must weigh under 4 pounds. - Side pocket for a water bottle. - Bag must be small enough that even my wife at 5'6" can manage it. - Internal storage compartments for the times that I want to use the bag for business travel. - A good amount of water resistance. - I want a bag that has a more rectangular structure to it, so that it does not look silly when carried over the shoulder messenger bag style. MY IMPRESSION: I have to say this bag does the best job so far at checking all my requirements. Although I personally don't see much use for a waist belt, I do like how this bag lets you use the shoulder strap as a waist belt and vice versa... pretty ingenious. I like how you can fully unzip one side of the bag suitcase style, exposing laptop storage, document storage, and other storage pockets. You can unzip that side of the bag just far enough to allow you to remove your laptop/tablet without having to open the entire bag. Unzipping the other side of the bag suitcase style exposes the main compartment that would typically be used for clothes, shoes, etc. That side also includes some basic storage compartments. The handle on the backside of the backpack also doubles as a luggage passthrough. Everything is well constructed, minimalist, and looks really good. NEGATIVES: I only have 4 minor complaints. The carry handles are pretty basic and lack any extra padding (almost non-existent when compared to other bags in this class). At least I do not have to fiddle with connecting two handles together with a clasp like with some other bags. The laptop sleeve does have padding in the bottom, but I wish it were a little more padded to protect my laptop from damage in case the bag is dropped on its bottom. There are no internal compression straps in the main compartment. My Tortuga Setout Divide has them and it is nice. Not a deal breaker for me, especially because it does add to the weight of a bag, and is might be overkill for small bags like this anyway. The water bottle pocket is very small and when the bag is fully packed it will only accommodate small bottles. An expandable water bottle pocket here would have made all the difference. FINAL THOUGHTS: The only other bag that also comes close to fulfilling all my requirements is the Are Flight Pack 3. It has YKK zippers which I do love. I believe Patagonia uses propriety zippers of their own making (although I could be wrong about that) and time will tell how good they are. The Aer is a 3/4 vertical open, not a full suitcase style like the Patagonia, and the Aer handles can get in the way when opening the bag (although its handles do offer more padding). Overall the Are and this Patagonia are really a close match, but I chose the Patagonia because of name reputation, suitcase style opening, and because I think it is a better looking bag. But it was a REALLY close matchup. I really do wish Patagonia had added an expandable water bottle pocket and better handle padding.. that would have moved the bag into a class almost it's own. Internal compression straps would have been nice although for a bag this size that might be overkill anyway.
