Used this around the house and for mid layer for skiing. Very thick and warm. Usually wear large, but ordered medium per size chart. Still a bit large, but it can be adjusted.
If not for the loose waist and lack of adjustability...
First, the fleece is fabulously warm and thick...love the feel and hand of the fabric! And, it's longer than advertised (which I was counting on from other reviews) since I'm 6'4" and need a 36" inseam, and this delivers it, even though it's advertised at 34" length. The "belt" doesn't really go all the way around, but is only about 5" long and attached to a thick elastic waistband. My wife may do some surgery on the waistband to shorten it so it fits my a bit better. Otherwise, this is a great product for cold days!
Extremely warm and comfy. High quality, as expected from Patagonia. They fit my 34 waist perfectly without really using the belt. Highly recommended and I already got a second pair in another color. Keep up the good work!
Needed some warm pants for winter, saw these and decided to try them. Theyre great! Wear on their own or use for layering. They run big, typically I get large from Patagonia so thats the size I ordered. Theyre wearable, but decided to try a different color size medium, perfect fit.
I love the Synchilla pants for comfort, and would have rated at 5 stars -- but, the belt has very little effect on tightening up the waist band. Plush Fleece Pants to Keep you Warm in Winter
This is my second pair. I wear them indoors as is or use as a base layer for outdoors. Extremely plush when you get them -- they lose a bit of that but are still very functional and warm after a year and a half of use. The wait adjustment is not very functional (doesn't do much adjusting) so you need to get the size that fits right.
I really should have read all these reviews first. Im a large in everything except these pants which wouldnt be an issue if the belt went all the around the waist. Pull-tight belt doesnt stretch not well thought out.
The pull-right belt is poorly designed. I cant pull it tight enough so the belt material hangs low and the belt isnt tight.

Comfortable though a bit large by my fault.
Very comfortable for casual wear. Would work also for cool weather hiking. Theyre a bit large for me as I bought the 34-36 size with my sometimes 34 waist. Would have been better to go down a size. Still a good purchase.
These pants are super comfortable and great to wear around the house. I would consider buying a size smaller as these run big in the waist and are also very long. The belt doesnt get tight enough like it could with drawstrings. All in all, great fleece pants. I will likely buy them in a smaller size and color at some point!

These things are all about the chill! Super cozy and comf. Cant wait for deep winter to lounge about in all the style. Seriously, these things are crazy warm and are my favorite thing after a long run.
The fleece pants are a staple for my daily wear. Im not sure I like the more narrow fit in the legs, the lack of cinch material at the ankles, or the new belt clasp instead of drawstring. It draws away from the pants flexibility that it previously had. Will I still wear them? Yes. But, the previous style/design was better.

Great fit for long legs, poorly designed belt
I'm tall and skinny (6'3" 160lb) and these fit my 34"l legs pretty well. It's too loose on my 32" waist, hands down. Once I put any weight in the pockets, they start sliding. I think if my waist were a few inches larger I could see the belt system working as intended. Or maybe a stronger elastic band. I may try to shorten the stationary side of the belt to get more adjustment out of it, but Patagonia missed the mark a bit on this design - it's not one-size fits most.
I have a home office on the lower level of our house. It is chilly here in the winter and these Synchilla pants are just the thing for sitting for extended periods of time and keeping warm. The older version of these pants did not have a belt "buckle" on them, just simple drawstrings. They worked better and you could hardly tell it was present. The buckle, today, flaps noisily in the laundry and it's more difficult to use the pants as a soft pillow.
I wear these pants a lot at home, the main reason I bought more pairs is for work on a commercial fishing trawler in AK. Very disappointed that the belt does not go all the way around. Whoever signed off on that decision should go back to designing clothes for toddlers. Sorry. My old pair of Patagonia fleece pants were amazing and lasted forever. Had high hopes for these, alas.
Improved over previous version with deeper front pockets. Good to lose the drawstring, but belt is purely decorative. I would prefer a shallower hip pocket for driving comfort.
I bought these because any company that offers an XXS must provide slim sizing. And I was right. They are obviously too long, but easy enough to cuff them. Super warm too. Exactly what I was looking for.
With the reality of COVID and work from home, plus cooler fall weather, I bailed out of my cheap cotton warm-up pants and bought a pair of these fleece pants at my local Patagonia store. They served me so well that I soon bought a second pair so I could rotate back and forth.
On the upside, the design works great for me: length in the legs easily ... Read Morecovers my ankles (I have shorter legs), covering my slippers/shoes with length to spare; relaxed but not baggy; strong elastic at the waist, making the belt rather unnecessary; and pockets when I run outside.
On the down side, the fleece fabric on the black color started to pill and shed after a couple months of wear around the house and washing every couple weeks. This pilling/shedding was most pronounced at the top of the pants, around the hem and pockets. I started to find little pieces of black fleece laying on the floor all around my home. I thought a couple runs through the washer and dryer might solve this pilling problem, but things actually got worse the last few weeks.
Fortunately, Patagonia's warranty is second to none: I took the pants back to my local store, showed staff the fabric issue, and they offered me a replacement pair or refund on the spot. They also encouraged me to write this review so the designers could keep an eye on this fabric issue, and you would know what you might experience.
I went with a replacement - going with another color - rolling the dice in the hopes that this defective pair is just an outlier, especially since my second pair of the fleece pants does not exhibit this pilling/shedding problem.
These fleece pants are worth a try; the design met all my criteria, except for the weird fabric pilling. Worse case, they shed and you have to return them. If this fabric issue is widespread, Patagonia can fix things down the road.
We appreciated the heads up on the pilling with these pants. We'll be sure to keep an eye on it and if in the future the second pair you replaced the original ones with end up doing the same thing, please do let us know as that would be a quality control issue.
