Echoing what everyone else says - the fit is right except the belt. I have to forcefully yank these up over my bum to get them on. Once on, they're great. 5'9'' 160lbs. Size M is good everywhere except the belt. L is easier to get up but too baggy once on.
I like these shorts, and chose them based on the pockets, which can hold a cell phone in easy reach when hiking or out and about. I read the reviews about the tight waistline/belt, so went to the Portland store to try them on before ordering. Unfortunately, the store does not stock this short and the sales folks were not very helpful about the prod... Read Moreuct. I usually am an Extra Small (eg wear a size 2 for example in Title Nine shorts and pants), but sometimes a Small in other brands. I ordered two pair of extra small... and yes that waistline is tight! I have to let the belt completely out to get them over my hips (112 lb / 5'3", slim, straight athletic build). I like them, but the jury is out while I test one pair to make sure it is comfortable for my activities. The leg diameter would be way too big for me in a Small.

design flaw
i love love love the color, material and all the pockets on these shorts. the issue is you cant get them over your hips because of the belt. i am usually a M. i tried both M and L. the L i could get over my hips but they were so poofy and large it was not flattering. the M i couldnt get close to pulling over my hips. will have to return.

Super cute but the belt?
I love hiking and bird watching and I thought these shorts would be great for those adventures! They are cute and breathable. They are a lot like the baggies but have the awesome pockets and I love the idea of the belt. But I cant for the life of me figure out how to adjust it to be bigger? The waist band should fit me at my waist, but I cant get t... Read Morehe shorts over my thighs (and my thighs are pretty average size) for my height and weight (Im 150, and lean). I would love to either figure out how to make the belt bigger so I can put them on, or return and exchange for a different type of shorts that I can actually wear without the hassle. Im disappointed though because I thought these would be terrific. Trading out the front piece of the belt with a clip would be better for these, I think.
I snagged the green pair w the blue belt & I loveee. Im 5 foot 8, 130 lbs, size 4 in LLL - the small fits perfectly! Comfortable but figure flattering, perfect length (not too short) & belt is easy to use. Will probably get in other colors
I love the way these shorts fit. They fit similar to baggies with the added benefit of great pockets.
I am 160lbs with a larger bum and smaller waist. I took one star off because I have to completely pull the belt out of the belt buckle to get them on. I may just end up taking the stitching out of the end of the belt so I can slide the belt in and... Read More out of the buckle faster and easier, because when I'm running summer camp full time, I wont have time fumble with my belt when I go pee every time. Also, make these in black!!! The block colors aren't my favorite. I got the pinkish color and I like them, but I'd rather have blue or black since I can see myself wearing these every single day this summer.

Great shorts, great pockets, but belt could be longer to accommodate hips
I love, love, love these shorts. The fabric is comfy, the fit is cute, and the best part is the pockets. I love that the pockets are on the side of the hips, not in the front or back like jeans pockets are. I also asked customer service and was told that the shorts use a PFC-free DWR, which is great. That said, I'm taking off one start for a f... Read Moreit issue that doesn't bother me, but could make these not work for people who would otherwise enjoy them: the belt could easily have been made 2 to 3 inches longer, so that you can get the shorts more easily over your hips. The belt is plenty long on my waist, but like most people, my hips are quite a bit bigger than my waist, so the shorts juuuuussst fit over my hips if I shimmy. The shorts also could have had a second belt loop, or a belt loop further from the front, so that less belt flops down when the belt is cinched around your waist.
I really wanted this to work but I got the blocked pattern with the belt and it just wasn't my style. That is a "me" issue and otherwise they fit nice and were super comfortable. The only problem was the belt. The belt is sewn in on one size and made so you can't completely undo or remove it. Because of this, I had to force it o... Read Morever my bum because the belt does not give although it has an elastic waste. Once up, they fit like a charm. I do have to say I have a bigger athletic bum and a pretty small waist. Again, once up, they were great and I loved the deep front pockets.
i got the blue one, and absolutely love the colors. also amazing pocket space. even though i'm 5'6" and ~135lbs, i have thick quads and glutes (but i don't like the baggie in front sorta look) so i usually get xs in patagonia shorts. these are kinda difficult to get over my rump bc of the built in "belt", but once they...
