Inaccurate weight

I returned these, no red flags regarding their size or quality though. I just wanted to write a quick review to let people know that the listed weight is incorrect. I had three pairs of mediums that all weighed >140g. Patagonia customer service indicated that they had ~150g on file for a size large and that they submitted a ticket to correct the... A little baggy

I bought these shorts because I wanted a 2nd pair of Nine Trails shorts. I was sad to see that they were no longer available. These seem to be, and fit basically the same. Very comfortable. They are a 1/2 inch or so longer in direct comparison. My wife feels that they look baggier on me, and I would have to agree. (Both shorts are the same size) I ... Amazing summer shorts

The way they fit and feel are just top knoch. 👌🏼 I give them 10 out of 10 for running 🏃‍♂️ shorts.

Love em

These are great running shorts, I really like how light they feel. I could see replacing all my running shorts with these.

Good follow up to 9 trails

I've been waiting for a 9 trails replacement forever because they stopped making the colorful patterns. Was fortunate to get the green pattern ones on sale. Awesome fabric and weight

I bought two pair of these to replace an old pair of Nine Trail shorts that blew out at the seams and to have a second pair. I use them mostly for casual wear while camping and they are perfect. Comfortable, a size bigger than I thought compared to the baggies, the liner is loose. So far it’s my most comfortable shorts. I liked them so much I bought them in another color.

These Shorts Suck

I bought a pair at a Patagonia store while on vacation - I was looking for the nine trails, but they were no longer being sold. I was fortunate later to buy a few 9 trails that were listed on this website before they sold out. On the plus side they look nice, but not when I'm hunched over trying to unsnag a pocket zipper.

Perfect Trail Running Shorts

I just love the: high quality materials/construction; deep zippered pockets to keep snacks/doggie bags/stuff securely in my pockets when running; shorts lining to protect against chafing; comfortable waistband with tie string on the OUTSIDE for easier tying/un-tying; great color selections. Good shorts. They have pockets. They fit well. I run comfortably in them. Great all-around exercise shorts

I wear these shorts for working out, hiking, pickleball, and as casual wear. The pockets are great and make these more useful than just running shorts. Nice soft feel and comfortable liner. I own several pairs of these now!

Quality product, unlike Nike

Patagonia has always made a quality product. I bought the purple color. Fabric is thin, soft, lightweight and stretchy. Liner is the same way. Not really good for running, I would recommend the 5" inseam rather than the 7". I wear them casually and occasionally for work.

Not into the liner at all

I hate a briefs-type liner because it digs in, but since these have a boxer-brief liner I decided to give them a shot. I really dislike it. I want more secure underwear. I want to minimize friction, you know? The liner in these are really loose in the wrong places. And since a liner is built in, if the shorts are sliding down at all then so are t... Read Morehe underwear. Since these have an elastic waist, it's hard to get them actually sag-proof like I could with something with belt loops, especially with things in the pockets. Even the tie-able cord inside is practically as stretchy as the waist itself so you can't get it secure, even if it's tight. And if you do make it tight, well there's no fly so you have to keep it loose enough to pull the front down to pee, or untie/tie it every time. How can you wear this for more than 1 day? If I'm hiking or something where I'm trying to pack light, I want to wear the same shorts for a few days and swap in fresh underwear daily. With a liner, that's too nasty, I'd need fresh shorts every day. I don't understand why anyone would ever choose shorts with a liner, but at least these dont dig in like briefs. I'll stick to independent underwear.

While not the Nine Trails, still very good

So I feel compelled to defend these shorts based on some of the other reviews. I have a handful of the previous iteration (Nine Trails), which I love, and I was hesitant to give the new version a try based on some of the other reviews. I took them for a spin yesterday on the trails, and I was very happy with them. I don't find that the sligh... Read Moretly more billowy leg opening to be an issue at all - it offers a little more range of motion than its predecessor. I prefer the fabric of the these over the Nine Trails - little lighter, more stretch, and per the tag, better odor control. And while I do prefer a zipper on the back pocket, it's not really an issue for me as that pocket is primarily for small trash I find while in the woods - I don't think anything will fly out of them. I do not use the pockets when running/hiking because I always have a pack on which carries everything - I do not like anything bouncing around in my pockets. The shape of the pockets is a little wonky (not sure if it's just my pair or they're all cut the exact same). When I was wearing these to walk the dog, my phone was in my pocket, and it had the tendency to slip sideways inside the pocket, which was a little awkward feeling and I had to keep adjusting it. The pocket of the Nine Trails was more narrow (up and down), and my phone always stayed vertical. I agree with another reviewer that the zipper has a tendency to catch on the fabric that surrounds the pockets/hangs over the zipper (for protection of the zipper?). I will say, however, that the overall fit is a little more loose, and the drawstring is a little stretchier which was needed to tighten it all up. All my Nine Trails are Larges, but I might be better suited in a Medium in these. Overall, an incredibly comfortable short, which I am happy to add to my collection of other Patagonia shorts and a go-to choice when hiking, running in the woods, walking my dog, and lounging.

Great shorts needing one imporvement

I'm a huge Patagonia fan. Adore these shorts for working out in, cycling and yoga. I have three pairs. Very light breathable material. Liner is not too tight. Nice zippered pockets. These were purchased as run shorts and find that I prefer Baggies to these. These are light, soft and comfortable but not quite the right material for me to run in. Some of the Best Shorts I've Owned

Those that are unhappy with these shorts, because they're comparing them to a similar, discontinued product aren't giving this product a proper, unbiased review and allowing them to shine as a standalone product. The waist is true to size and sits well without being overly constrictive or feeling too loose. The fabric is soft and manages sweat and dirt well. The side pockets are deep enough to carry a wallet or large phone with issue and they don't flare out like the pockets in some running shorts, keeping the overall profile of the shorts very composed. The rear pocket snap button works well enough and I don't feel concerned for my wallet. After purchasing a few pairs, all I want to wear are these shorts, especially when comparing them to similar products from other brands, or shorts that are outdoor or activity focused. Ruined short designed based on Nine Trails Shorts

I've been a huge fan of the Nine Trails shorts and no shorts have ever come close to these. They were perfect in every way the leg opening had a nice taper and zippers on every pocket was amazing. I never had bounce, the material was perfect. I had nothing negative to say about these. I bought these because I don't see the nine trails r... Read Moreestock and I really really hope you aren't going to discontinue the nine trails. Anyways, lets start with the leg opening, I don't know what makes you go towards this sort of cut but it is terrible. It is boxy, way too loose, the leg opening is like dress also because you made it more loose there is much more bounce of the items in the pocket causing a more frustrating experience while running. That in it of itself kinda ruins the whole thing. You say its to create better range of motion regardless of body type and I don't buy that what so ever. I have large thighs way bigger than the average, and I never felt any sort of restriction. So I don't really understand this decision whatsoever it is oblivious. If anything you should've kept the same cut since you are using a more stretchable material, that should result in better range of motion! No need to ruin the cut of your products. Next the length, I own 4 nine trails and compared them all side by side and the length is a bit longer again again referring back to the horrible cut. Its unflattering and do not feel confident in these shorts. If the goal was to make them "lighter" these shorts should not been the ones. If you run trails you wont even noticed the difference what so ever, so why try to achieve a lighter profile. Keep that to the shorter inseam running shorts. A couple grams is not going to weigh anyone down. Now onto the snap button, just a horrible decision to switch from the zipper. I always felt confident with the nine trails zippers and now you have to worry about damaging the button if you decide to rest on a rock while on the trail. Now that's another frustration to consider, when it rubs and scrapes on everything. This button is going to wear out at this rate. Also a button has a higher failure rate than the zipper. I always carry my wallet in the back pocket I feel so secure knowing its zipped up. A button does not give you the same confidence of your pockets security. Overall if these are going to replace the nine trails then we just lost a great product. In conclusion, these shorts are a collection of horrible design decisions and genuinely believe these did not need to go intro production to replace an already perfect product.

I will say though, I think Patagonia is closer to my ideal than anyone else. I should add I am an old-school minimalist. I don't carry a belt or water. I want my shorts to do everything. And I like to wear shorts and a t-shirt that feels like cotton, even if it is technical. Here's my preference: Length - Your two mainstays are 8" and 5". I'd actually prefer a 6" or 7". 8" is more like a basketball short. Too much material. I think you used to. make a 7" in your first version. Liner - I can't stand the compression shorts, but I do appreciate a liner. What's wrong with the old underwear liner? The compression shorts seem to sag and I keep pulling them up. They feel weird on my legs. The lighter mesh ones you are now using are better than the Pockets - I do like the zip pockets you now put on the front and back. I need a pocket that'll fit my phone and is sturdy enough. What I'd like to see is a back pocket that has thicker material around it so that the phone does not flap and is big enough for a Galaxy or 14 Max... with a zipper to protect it. On the 5" model I have tried to get the phone in their and it's a struggle. On the 8" model if I put the phone in the front it flops around. The phone needs to go in the back, but you need more material to keep it from flopping. I did see another company that puts a pocket on the liner in the leg, but that's weird too. I don't want to feel it. The back is best. The pocket needs to be able to hold a phone. It needs to have a zipper to keep the contents contained. And it needs to be substantial to keep it stable. Material - lighter weight that dries quickly. The version I bought yesterday is the best, but I've seen you make them in several thicknesses. It just needs to be a little more substantial in the phone pocket. I hope this helps. I am happy to talk with a designer in more detail. I have thought a lot about this for a long time. I appreciate your taking this all into consideration to make a better trail running short. Thanks! Grant

Fantastic healthy option to Nine Trails shorts

So these shorts are almost identical to the Nine Trails ones, with the exceptions that they are lighter, as I believe another reviewer mentioned; as well as PFC-free which is huge. My mother had cancer and chemo messed her brain up, and PFCs/PFAS have a risk factor for certain liver and kidney cancers. My jobs at the mo are personal training and so... Read Moreccer coaching, so I would wear the Nine Trails shorts (that contain PFC/PFAS, and can transmit via skin contact and dust inhalation) for entire days, and now finally I can wear shorts without potentially increasing the risk of a health situation that affects millions of Americans. I know it not may seem like much to some, but that peace of mind is great, particularly when your profession is so reliant on clothing of this ilk, and I cant wait for Patagonia to be entirely PFA/PFC free.

Thanks for your review, Ryan! We're so glad to hear you're loving these shorts, and appreciate the work we're putting forth to eliminate PFCs entirely from our line. We'd like to mention one thing, the PFCs that do exist on our clothing are strongly bonded to the fabric and pose an extremely low risk to the end user. PFCs are dangerous to humans primarily through ingestion of tainted water or food, just something to keep in mind! We look forward to also ridding our line completely of these chemicals. In the meantime, you can search PFC free items on our website by entering "PFC free" in the search bar.

Please add some storage to these shorts!

My wishlist for a pair of running shorts: boxer brief liners, 7-8 inch length, and storage for my cell phone, a key or two, and a credit card. When I do longer runs, I generally have a hydration pack or something that can carry the items I want to bring with me, but often I am doing shorter runs and these shorts won't allow me bring those item... Read Mores. Please give us a version of these shorts with no bounce/secure storage for the items I mentioned. I'd prefer the phone pocket be built into the liner, but a zip pocket in the back would work as well.

Hi Orion, thank you for sharing this feedback; we're passing it along to our design team. It sounds like these shorts aren't going to work for you. We're sorry to hear that! Please feel free to [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) them if you wish.

the Ultralighters DREAM shorts

these have a very similar resemblance to the Nine Trails shorts except one major difference, these are nearly one third of the weight. at 81 grams or 2.85 ounces, these multi trail shorts are lighter than the Nine Trails, both strider and strider pros, lighter than the trailfarer and baggies lights, these are even lighter than their underwear, and ... Read Moreit has built-in underwear. i purchased 4 pairs already, and Im ready to ditch my nine trails and strider pros. this in my opinion is the most innovative product Patagonia has released this year. this is as close to being naked without being naked as it gets.

Comfortable & Stylish

These fit great and I love the built in underlayer. They're very light, perfect length/size, and look great.
