I was really looking forward to receiving these in the mail. When I tried them on, however, I was really disappointed. I'm 5'3, 135lbs athletic build and these shorts fit very weirdly. So comfy and light
Loved those shorts. Very comfy, the fabric don't go up as you move and feels light and fluid. The pocket on the back is very practical and you still don't feel it even with things in it.
I wanted to use these shorts for running but I might return them or just wear them around the house. The way these are designed, they should fit someone with equal volume in front and in back, which is no one I know in a size Medium. The length of the front of the crotch curve is too long, the back too short by about 2 inches compared to other pair... Read Mores of pants that I have. Idk if larger sizes are designed differently, but the mediums fit me around the waist, around the hip, and around the thigh, but the odd placement of the inseam/crotch curve makes it feel as though Im wearing them backwards. (And Im not!)
Hello Rachel, thanks so much for your detailed review and we're really sorry the fit and design are not what you expected. Your feedback has been passed along to the appropriate team. Please feel free to [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) your shorts under warranty!

Loved those shorts. Very comfy, the fabric don't go up as you move and feels light and fluid. The pocket on the back is very practical and you still don't feel it even with things in it.
These are my favorite shorts. I want to wear them everyday. I do paddleboarding and these dry faster than my Patagonia board shorts. I wear them hiking, working out, sleeping, biking, lounging, cleaning....I need more. PLEASE Patagonia, I need more patterns and colors!
It is telling that the size chart only lists natural waist for determining sizing for these shorts, as if the hip measurement was not important for most people to determine fit, and as if these shorts are worn at the natural waist.
Essentially if your hip measurement is larger than your low waist measurement, (and its because you have a not-flat b... Read Moreackside), these shorts may not fit well, and a different size wont help. Its not your fault, its the shorts.
It took me a while to figure out why these shorts feel so strange. It felt like I was wearing them backwardsthe front of the short was pulling in at the crotch and causing the shorts to ride/fold up on the front of my thighs. I thought that maybe I just had the wrong size, but nothe shorts fit fine when Im standing still. I am an amateur home sexist but I have drafted my own pants patterns before. I decided to compare the crotch curve of the shorts to some other (store bought) pants I have, both stretchy and not, and took a photo. There was a huge difference. The crotch curve on my other pants is longer in the back and shorter in the front by at least two inches. In sewing, a difference of just a few quarters of an inch in this area can affect the fit. They all had relatively the same length of curve, but the inseam in my other pants is placed much farther forward in the curve (allowing for some room for your backside).
It looks like these Patagonia shorts were designed for an extra small person (runner I guess) with very little difference between the waist and hips measurement, and then for larger sizes they assumed that same ratio, which makes no sense. If Patagonia is going to sell shorts like this, they should at least provide an accurate sizing chart showing both waist (low waist not natural waist), and hip measurements.
Hi Rachel, thank you for taking the time to write us such a detailed review. We're really sorry to hear about the disappointment with the way the shorts fit and our sizing chart. We truly appreciate this feedback as its crucial to improving things for the future. We've passed along this feedback to the appropriate members of our team.

Strange fit
I can't figure out the fit of these shorts. I have a pair in Medium and the liner literally hangs off of me. So I got a small to see how that worked but they are too small for my liking. They fit me (5'4", 130, a runner so muscular legs and butt), but too tight for my liking. I'll keep looking for shorts.
Bought these for summer trail runs. They're just a tiny bit big in the waist and leg size, even with the drawstring, but they're still great (I think a small would be too small for me). They're the comfiest shorts I own. They dry quickly and don't ride up during runs. I'm about 5'8, 145lbs. Probably going to get anothe... Read Morer pair.
I purchased these shorts because they were on sale and I was looking at the baggies. These are shorter than I normally wear, but the waist-band is really comfortable and the liner means I'm not worried I'm showing anything I shouldn't be. I absolutely love these shorts! Fabric is so soft, yet durable and stretches perfectly with movement. The Nine Trail 4" short feels a tad bigger overall (not just length) than the Strider 3 1/2" short. Bought both in XS. Almost identical in weight, breathability, quick-drying and stretch. Both are awesome shorts for active use. I use mine for hiking, biking, running, etc. The Nine Trail has a slightly padded waist band whereas the Strider... Read More does not. So if packing for a trip, the Strider is preferable choice for least amount of bulk. Both have pocket with loop. Overall, the Nine Trail is just a bit baggier - on me. I do love the bright Catan Coral color!
I've recently gone down a size in bottoms from S to XS so I assumed these might be a little tight with the XS but they are not! They are so comfortable I can barely tell I am wearing them. The waistband is very comfortable and stretchy but stays in place. The liner underneath does not dig in to your bikini line either. I love the bright orange... Read More color. The zipper pocket on the low back is awesome as well. I tried to fit my phone in it but my phone was too big however I was able to fit a large set of keys while running. I like the position on the low back instead of hidden on the front or sides as the weight is distributed equally left to right for whatever is in the pocket and having weight close to your hips is good for comfort. I've even worn these doing yoga too on warm days (having the liner makes sure you have privacy where you need it for some poses!). I have a pair of shorts that are similar from Spring 2016 that are a S and this orange pair in XS is by far better.
I love them, but it drives me nuts with Patagonia's shorts that you never can rely on the same size. Baggies run large, these shorts run really small. The material is great for runners and they're well designed, but I had to return them.
I lived in these shorts while training for my marathon, and still use them all of the time on runs. Despite months of regular use--and a couple of falls on the trails--they've held up great. I love the zippered pocket in the back--perfect for stashing my car key, ID, and insurance card.

These are my favorite shorts for trail running, as they feel so light! They're my go-to shorts for trail running, and even after runs from 15-20 miles, no chafing or other issues.
I wanted to like these shorts. They are a nice material. However, the cut just does not work for me. I am 5'3" 120lbs. My butt and thighs are muscular from trail running and lifting. The size XS fit well in the waist but was too tight through the hips. I exchanged for a S which fit better in the hips but was just too loose in the waist. I... 6ft, 170lbs, athletic built, wearing size M, they are at bit loose, but I like them this way. Very light, weightless, like wearing nothing. not too short and not too long. Fairly large back pocket (fits an iphone). I get the least chaffing in these. Ran multiple 50k and a 50 miler. They are my go to running shorts!
I have these shorts in two colors now. They are the only ones I want to run and hike in. Super tiny, light weight, like nothing is there. The liner stays in place too. I’m usual a small but in these I get an xs.
These shorts don't fit as well as other long (3.5-4") running shorts. I think its because the material is slightly stiffer. Other than that, I do like that they don't add pressure around the waist which is really important to me as a long-distance runner. The 4 was slightly larger than I anticipated. In other brands, I typically wear... Read More a small or 4.
I love the fabric and weight of the shorts. The pockets are fine.. The inseam is shy of 4" and coverage in the rear is, well, exposing. The inner liner is also a bit on the skimpy side. The shorts are fine for level running but beware of the rear view if elevated!
These shorts are nice and light but the liner inside is cut strangely. When I tried them on I immediately wanted to pull and adjust the liner because it rubs on my legs. I'm sending them back.
I ended up sending the shorts back because they were too big. I’m 4’11 and 105 lbs. The quality seemed nice though, if I ever see the shorts in xxs I’d definitely give them another try.
Last year, I lost my keys on a trail run around sunset while wearing open pocketed shorts. Ever since then, I have been on the hunt for a pair of running shorts that has zippered pockets--and can handle ridiculous amounts of sweat. This pair of shorts does both, and I couldn't be happier! Keep up the good work Patagonia!
These shorts are very comfortable for longer-distance runs (I've worn them from 3-8.5 miles). The back pocket keeps your stash low on your hips so it doesn't bounce around and drag the shorts down.

These shorts rock. No chafing on thighs and they fit near perfect, much looser than the model pics. I've worn these from the hot desert to storming above tree line, they dry fast and cut the windchill.

I don’t like super thick or canvas hiking shorts, but I need a longer short to prevent chaffing between my thighs when I’m hiking longer distances. These shorts were perfect for me. I ended up getting pine tar on them during one backpacking trip, but I love these shorts so much I ended up spending a few hours scrubbing until they were clean. Would highly recommend these to anyone wanting a light weight yet durable and breathable hiking short.
I absolutely love these shorts. I have worn them for running, and for summer out and about a like the farmers market. I love the large pocket on the butt. These shorts are a lightweight short which is great for all my activities. Definitely recommend.
These are one of the most reliable shorts I own for not riding up and providing constant coverage and staying put without digging in to my waistline. These are the most comfortable, flattering, and practical pants I own. I will be buying a new pair.
Can't please 'em all, but you definitely pleased me
I am thrilled with the modifications to this short for Spring 2019. I was hesitant to order because some reviewers not happy and also the inseam on my last pair of Nine Trails were long for my liking. I am 6ft tall and 170 lbs and ordered the XL - they are loose, but comfortable and flattering and I can tighten the waistband with the tie just fine. Guessing the L would be tight in the bum. These shorts look cute for just walking around, but fit terribly when I run in them. They get all bunchy in the crotch area.
