These don't last
Faded after 5 months, then became thin, and then the back ripped right next to the pocket. Would not recommend.

Great looking shorts, but deteriorates after a few years
I bought these shorts in September of 2020 and unfortunately they are no longer wearable. It is too bad, I loved these shorts before they fell apart. It has basically started to deteriorate with holes and the material has begun ripping at the seams. Overpriced for what it is.
We're sorry to hear these shorts haven't held up as we would expect! We will reach out to you about returning them under our warranty. Thank you for this review, Caleb.
Very comfy with great style, but fit not consistent with other Lightweight All-Wear
These are absolutely fantastic shorts that feel quality and have a really nice looking style, but there's a couple things that keep me from unconditionally recommending them. Compared to the Non-Volley, 6" All-Wear Hemp Shorts, the fit is quite a bit different. These have an overall much looser fit, with a lot more extra fabric hanging do... Read Morewn around the crotch (which also makes them feel a good bit heavier), so while there's only a 1" inseam difference, compared to the 6" Shorts these 7" Volley Shorts rest ~3-3.5" lower on my leg when I stand up, basically down to the top of my knee (basically, the same as the model in the display pictures). For me, these sit in a really awkward place in the Patagonia line-up. They're quite long, and while baggier than the 6" All-wears, they're not baggy enough that they don't feel a bit restrictive (especially if you have thicker thighs like I do), an issue that wouldn't be quite as bad if not for the length. Their length and semi-bagginess also mean that for a very hot summer's day where you really want to wear something light, that I feel like in almost every circumstance that the Baggies Naturals are a better fit for you, with their much lighter fabric and baggier legs--or the standard Baggies themselves of course, if their swimsuit style is more your thing. If you're someone who likes your shorts hanging that low, these are absolutely great and definitely the choice for you. Or if you're just a lanky person with very long legs, these should probably be in your shopping cart already. For others, I won't say these are a bad purchase--I still think they're very nice, but I think that for most people, there are probably better shorts in Patagonia's lineup for you. Personally, I'd love to see these revised in some way--maybe a smidge less baggy in the crotch area to bring the leg of the short up a bit, and/or maybe a big baggier in the leg itself. Or, maybe just make the legs a little less short on their own? Either way, these are still a good pair of shorts that haven't done anything wrong, which is why I give them 5* in spite of my criticisms above--I just don't think they've done as much right (particularly with the fit) as other shorts Patagonia sells.
Go-to summer shorts
These are perfect for almost any occasion during the summertime. They're lightweight and breezy for the hot months here in the Southeast. They perform well for climbing/hiking, and can be dressed up with a short-sleeve button down for grabbing a beer and tacos afterwards. These are the first thing in my bag for any warm-weather trip.
They are very comfy, however, the length make it awkward for a leg's range of motion.

Great Look and Function, But Unusual Sizing
Love the look and function of these shorts, but if I could change one thing, it would be the sizing. I am 6ft 2in and have a 33 inch waist. The medium was way too tight, and I can pull on the large without unbuttoning/unzipping. I ultimately went with the large, but have to use the drawstring to keep them up.
Seam at the bottom of the right pocket came undone after first wash. Not what I expected when all other Patagonia products I have owned have been quality and held up over years. Could be a bad batch but frustrating to spend the money and have them deteriorate so quickly.

Well made, comfortable
Love these, really comfortable and good looking. Only issues was, I wanted something loose fitting so ordered an XL - well, I'm writing up a new tune "mooning in the Carribean". Those waves have power! Next pair will be L and I'll just cinch these up a bit tighter! You'll love 'em but go with the size chart.
These are great shorts but they are way too long and run big. Please cut all the shorts back to 5"-6", including the stand-ups.
Thanks for the review, Drew! Most of our shorts will include their inseam within the product name, for example these are called Men's Lightweight All-Wear Hemp Volley Shorts - 7", the 7" standing for the inseam. We have a few different shorts that come in 5" or 6" inseams, you can browse those by clicking [here](https://www.patagonia.com/shop/mens-shorts).
Fabric failure from first few wears
was excited to receive and try on these shorts. the fabric quality seems high but after two wears doing casual activity to low intensity hiking, a hole formed away from any seams on the seat of the shorts and i'm disappointed something like this happened so fast. the fit is true to size and the sewing is solid, just bummed there's a fabri... Legs too tight
Large is too big in the waist. Medium the leg is too tight. Bummer. Good shorts otherwise.
We're sorry to hear the slim fit design was restrictive in the leg. You may prefer sizing down in our [regular fit Men's Shorts](https://www.patagonia.com/shop/mens-shorts?prefn1=fit&prefv1=regular). Please reach out to our Customer Service team if you have any questions. We'll be glad to help!
Way too baggy
I ordered a large in several patagonia shorts, and these were the only ones that were a huge disappointment. I love the elastic waistband, but the crotch was so incredibly long and the shorts themselves so overly wide that I felt I was drowning in them, it looked ridiculous. Even for light wearing around the house, they were massive. I much prefer... Read More the new hemp and cotton blend non-volley shorts as they fit well top to bottom, not too big and not too tight.

Great for hot weather travel
I got these hoping to take them on a trip to very hot and humid Thailand. I also ordered the slightly shorter button waist version of these for the same reason. light and easy shorts
I wear these type shorts (M, L sizes) versus the Patagonia shorts that are produced in specific sizes (32, 34, etc.). Mainly because I have encountered too much variation in specific sized pants of any type, not just Patagonia brand. I like these shorts. They are big in the waist on me, but there's a drawstring for that. I hate tight fitting p... Read Moreants, shorts, etc., and I have muscular legs which makes the mediums fine in the waist but a bit too restricting. They are lightweight and basically I do not notice them - which is the key for me - if I notice the clothing it is restricting. The only thing I would change is a little more material where the crotch meets the inseam. I also wear the Baggies Naturals and the Stand Up shorts. The main problem with the Stand Up shorts has been the sizing - but they are pretty bomb proof if the sizing happens to work out.
The best shorts period.
My brother got a pair but ordered the wrong size so he gave them to me. Instantly better than any other shorts Ive ever worn. Bought two more myself. Good for being active, great dad shorts, good for golf, hiking. Wouldnt wear them to run in or work out in but could definitely lift in them. Will never wear another brand, cut, it material again.
Santa Monica Punching Bag
Thats right. I got these in the adroitly named pelican color, for the sake of fancy city and suburban brunches. Great weight, ultra simple, appropriately stylish
It's been a long journey to find the right pair of shorts that are simple enough to be worn in casual/social circumstances but technical enough to not just be a heavy cotton sweatfest when I get moving. These shorts are super comfortable and I like how deep the pockets are. My only complaint is these shorts show off the plumbers crack when I bend over.

Awesome design and quality!
I really like how the shorts are designed. The drawstring makes me feel more casual and comfortable. I wear both colors all the time and like that I can relax in them at home, go out for walks/hikes, but at the same time wear them out in slightly more formal settings.
Easy-to-wear, great fabric
I really like these shorts! The fabric is cool to the touch with a subtle texture, which is great for the heat. But they're also basic enough not to draw too much attention. Read Moree waist is definitely a touch loose. I bought the Baggies Naturals in a medium at the same time but ordered a medium in those due to the relaxed fit, and I like how they fit, too, in the legs and seat but those are a little tight in the waist.
I've bought two pairs of these shorts. The fit and feel is what I expected. However, *both* pairs ripped right up the back, completely ruined, after very moderate use. The shorts are top notch. I needed a pair for work and I love them. I wear them all of the time. I love the elastic waste and button, plus the tie draw string which makes it a little more snug for when I lose a bit of weight over the summer. These shorts will be well worn and used in their lifetime! Thanks, Patagonia!
Great casual shorts, they are slim.
I was wary of these shorts given some of the reviews mentioning they're way too tight. While they are definitely slim fit, I would call the fit flattering rather than tight. I probably wouldn't be able to do a full split in these or kick an apple off someone's head, but I also don't expect to need to while wearing them.
Can't believe they even manufactured these
I have never put on a pair of shorts that fit worse. If any patagonia bottoms ever fit me, theyre size small. I have the baggies shorts in small that fit perfect. These are so tight around hips (not waist) that I could literally barely get them on and couldn't even fit my phone into the pocket theyre so tight. Comedically bad fit but a waste o... This year's cut is smaller than previous
These are great shorts. I have a pair from previous years and they are durable and comfortable. The quality of this model seems to be good too. However, these are cut much smaller than previous models. And going up to the L was too big. Too much variance from M to L in my opinion. Unfortunately, I returned them due to size.
Functional, But Could Fit Better
Fit is good on these - I'm 6' and have a 32 waist and they fit just fine (the elastic waistband with the added string pull help give you flexibility there). I really like the material these shorts are made from. The hemp/cotton blend makes them feel durable without feeling hot - which is good because I plan on trekking around Southeast As... Read Moreian in them. My only complaint with the shorts - and really my only complaint with Patagonia shorts and pants in general - is the fit. These are marked as a slim fit, but I would still call them pretty relaxed. I don't see a lot of slimming toward the knee and overall they are more baggy than tight. I've made my peace with that though, and since I looking for function over fashion these are going to work out great.
Lightweight All-Wear Hemp Volley Shorts
The shorts are cool and comfortable. I like the length and the 4 pockets and the draw string and the elastic waist. They just don't look that great, because they are always full of wrinkles.
