I was looking for something light but still keeps you warm during a cool day or high winds while hiking and rock climbing. The R1 is the perfect; very light, stretchy, still breathable and wears true to size.

A Very Nice Top
I enjoyed my first R! TechFace so much that I bought a second one. First one fit great (size M), the second one required a few more garments, but eventually I got one that fits well. - Not... Read More warm. You almost need a full additional sweater underneath to make this work as a jacket below room temperature if you are standing still. I think this comes down to the baggy torso and loose wrist cuffs and collar, letting the wind in and not letting the jacket trap air for your body to warm up. I have other garments made of similar material that are warmer.
- No chest pocket(s) for when you have a harness or backpack/extra storage for travel. I'd have considered keeping the jacket if it had more storage space, as a lightweight layer for traveling.

Excellent Piece
This is a great light weight jacket or a layering piece (or to wear around the house when you keep the thermostat turned down). Good freedom of movement, sufficient number of pockets, not much more I could ask for.
Really like the look and feel of this piece but it does run a little long. Not the tallest guy but I feel like this is 2-3 inches longer than it needed to be.
This has quickly become my favorite outer layer for cool spring and fall days. It blocks enough wind, breathes well, and has just the right amount of warmth. The outer face fabric also seems pretty abrasion resistant.
Medium is the right fit for me with a t-shirt base layer.
I love this piece. Its a great layer skiing and can be worn as light jacket casually. The fit between a medium and large are so different. I normally wear M found it very tight around the waist. Went with a large and its very loose. First time I had this issue.
I like your fleece & R1 jackets.
I have added inside zipper pockets to most of my jackets for travel.
Patagonia should offer jackets with inside zipper pockets for travel, etc.

The R1 jacket is surprisingly thin but works really well. I use it as a layer in cold or rainy conditions and as a stand alone jacket in mild weather. This is my second R-1 tech jacket, which I use as a lightweight under layer for winter golf. The R-1 is great at keeping me warm, with its inside lining technology and minimizes restriction to my golf swing. Love my R-1s
This is one of my favorite jackets ever. Its incredibly lightweight but deceptively warm. I wear it while running and to do anything outside between 35-60 degrees F. I am 6 foot 3 and the XL fits great.
The fit on the arms are a bit loose, but the waffle pattern on the inside keeps me warm. A great base layer under my puffer. And exceptional service from Patagonia as always to help me with my purchase.
An excellent mid weight top that is super comfortable. Breathable fabric and lightweight allows easy movement making it the perfect thing to wear when playing sports like golf or pickle ball
I usually wear medium size (I am 5'10" / 170 lbs) and when medium is a bit tight, it's tight only slightly. This, however, is so slim/tight that I couldn't even close the zipper. So, I will be returning it.

This is an excellent lightweight shell. There's a thin, quilted layer of insulation on the inside, two zipped exterior side pockets, and an adjustable/internal/invisible waist draw string (which is clever). Very interesting blend of some wind protection, good vapor transmission rates, and weather resistance. Quite thin for a pile garment which also make it an ideal mid layer. Redefines what a pile jacket can do, nothing else like it. I have two of them; the regular jacket in XL, and the hoody version too in a smaller L size for Mtn biking.
I love this jacket. It looks good enough to wear at work, which I do, but mostly I wear it at home, out and about. It is perfect for layering when it gets cold.

I love this jacket for casual use breezy morning work commute very lightweight and comfortable even I wore it during my morning hike to Stone Mountain park temperature were mid 55 it warms me up enough to enjoy the breeze morning.
I had been looking for a lightweight full-zip jacket for a couple of years. This was the lightest I could find. It fits well, it's very comfortable, and it's great for home or outings. This is my go-to for high-40s - high-60s °F, dry or light rain.

Comfortable wearing
This is perfect for daily wear for California weather
Let me start by saying I'm pretty critical of most things.
I bought this mainly for casual wear and hiking in the strange spring-adjacent season in New England where it's supposed to be spring but its actually still cold. But not cold enough to wear a puffy.
This fits the bill perfectly. It keeps you a nice temperature -- not hot. Comf... Read Moreortable. It regulates temperature well, so you can use it both casually and actively. I was going back and forth between this and the R2, and I am glad I picked this one.
Being the techface, It blocks wind pretty well too, as well as light rain. So I feel comfortable and dry wearing this if there's an on and off drizzle with a chill throughout the day. If it were a full-blown rainstorm I'd probably wear this as a mid below my rain shell, though. It's a super versatile jacket that I'm getting a ton of use out of.
My wife jokes that I'm the spokesperson for this jacket because I can't stop talking about how much I like it, which is pretty rare.
If you're on the fence, just get it.
Ran into the same issue w/ the r1 tech that I did before w/nano air. Men's model has a inset (reg) sleeve, women's has a RAGLAN style sleeve ??? Gal Pal loves hers, and I wanted to love it too,but I had to return. Fit everywhere EXCEPT in the armpit. Cut too high and just DID NOT WORK !! WHY designers decided to make men's w/ a inset... Read More sleeve vs Raglan (as men normally have bigger shoulders) has been beyond me for years. I have 4 R1 pullovers over the years & 2 have raglan & 2 have inset slv, & the raglan fits much better! Hoping Patagonia gets it together in future 'active' wear and makes some changes. AND maybe get rid of the 'SLIM' fit and go to a more "ACTIVE" fit for their products that ARE designed for actually using other then for casual wear. I'm 5-6 & 140 ish and most other brands small works fine. And Patagonia REG fit (S) pieces work great, MED = NO GO ! Too loose everywhere. Still holding out for a tweaked design.

Great purchase!
Works with everything I do outdoors, havent had rain hit yet but, wind, cold, snow its awesome! Easily can put a Patagonia vest underneath for more layers.
I have another R1 1/4 zip pull over. This jacket is lighter but has as seemingly wider temperature range (40-70 degree) as that top which is thicker. The color and style give it a great look for casual wear but it is also a great hiking top.
Typically I wear a small in Patagonia product (5'9", 160lbs) Had to exchange this R1 small for a medium as it was going to be a more versatile jacket between sport/work. Customer service for exchange was amazing as well as the item itself. Will keep me as a customer for life
Its a great jacket - well-designed, perfect for keeping handy when theres a chill in the air. I was excited when I first opened but unfortunately, the sizing isnt for me. As w/ other Patagonia jackets, I tend to fall in the middle of a M and a L (Im 510/170lbs.) Its frustrating as the two sizes are both on opposites sides of the spectrum for me i.e... I love the fabric and the feel of the techface jacket. I also love the fact that it's breathable and still somewhat weatherproof. Unfortunately, I find myself rarely wearing it because with my slim/average build, it feels far too baggy around the middle and a bit long in the waist. Read Morer underneath the techface, but I don't see the need for that because my main use case is high output activities in cold weather where I want as little under the techface as possible. I would love a slim fitting version of this because it would be such a versatile ski touring layer: for spring skiing, it would be great over a t-shirt or sun shirt for the down, and in colder weather it would be great with a light base layer for the uphill. The bagginess of this garment also makes putting anything in the pockets really annoying because I end up with stuff sagging and flopping around the middle of my belly. It's really frustrating because this jacket has so much potential, but falls so flat because of the fit.
Bought this to replace/renew previous model in same exact style. This arrived and was a lighter weight version. Love the fit and the style just a little to lightweight to provide any warmth spring and fall.

My favorite running jacket
Perfect for spring and fall. I have a longer torso and arms and the R1 fits me perfectly.
The new R1 tech face full zip is a decent jacket, but has drawbacks. The jacket is larger than prior R1s, the arms and body are long. Also, the jacket is looser fit than prior models. Lastly, the cuffs are too loose. Love Patagonia clothes, but this item is disappointing.

This version features slash pockets on the sides that are not accessible when wearing a pack or harness. What is the point of making a garment from a technical material and then eliminating the features that make it usable in technical applications? Sorry but this is a dealbreaker for me. I guess if you are into wearing technical gear while sipping craft beer, it would work great.

Ideal mid layer for skiing
This is an extremely comfortable mid layer. I bought this for skiing and it is an ideal mid layer that is warm and breathable. I liked it so much I am ordering the tech face pants as a mid layer for cold days skiing. Highly recommended!
This R1 is a great fit and very comfortable. Top layer helps keep you dry but also breathable. Like the full zip rather than quarter zip and it is more like a jacket than a shirt. Love the style. Looks great and I am an athletic build. Sleeves a bit long like most Patagonia products but not bulky and not an issue for me.
Has anyone else had pilling issues with their jacket? Mine shows some pilling after the first month and I'm trying to figure out an easy way to clean it up.
Otherwise fits great, helps regulate heat both outside and in.

To prevent pilling, we recommend washing that item either by hand in cool to cold water, or separately in your washing machine on the gentle cycle. Lay it flat to dry rather than place it in the dryer where the fabric can easily get abraded. Removing pilling that has already occurred is very easy, a sweater shaver or sweater stone is an excellent tool and can help the garment look brand new.

This thing is now my favorite piece of fly fishing kit and I have basically all of the Patagonia items you would expect for a dedicated year round fly fisher. It completely shattered my expectations and I wear it all the time. If you fly fish, get one!

Stylish outer layer for cool days
I got this in Andes Blue - great color! I wore it over a button down shirt to dinner at a restaurant with my wife and she said I looked outdoorsy but stylish. It gave me just the little bit of warmth I needed. Not windproof or waterproof but great as a light outer layer or mid-layer.
This jacket is perfect in every way. The fit, the weight and the look. I found this jacket to be the perfect gift for anyone and everyone so I have purchased it in Men's and Women's in various sizes. Everyone loves it!
I looked far and wide for this jacket. I wanted something not too long, not too heavy, warm, yet breathable, had to be stretch and the kicker...waterproof. This fits all of them. I wanted one layer to save weight and movement. It's warm enough for WA state in late March, April, May, June. In the winter I'll wear it under a rain jacket.
The jacket itself is great and I enjoy using it. The fit is very specific so I'd recommend trying it on first. It is slim fit, a little longer than I thought and the arms are pretty long. Again, the product itself is great, just make sure it fits you.
This should be marketed for trail runners!

unfortunately runs super tight like a 'skinny' version for a jacket, t shirt. the product it is really good, I do walk 5 miles everyday early morning here in MA is kind of cold and this jacket works well, it is breathable, lightweight and keeps you warm enough during this season.
Fleece squares are not quite as big and chunky as regular R1 products but I guess that cuts down on weight and bulk. My only criticism is that the collar doesn't stand up as shown in the photos.
This product is done just right, the sizing is as good as it can get: sleeve lenght c orrect, wrist opening sized just right, waist just fits, collar is a bit tall but useful. The feel is on the edge of stiffness but it is light at the same time. Wearing it as much as I can as have worn out my previous model R1.
I now own this piece in this model, and with the hood. It has been my go to this winter! As a shell, it has repelled many hours of snow fall. Worn with midweight capilene, and a lightweight capilene t-shirt, I was warm shoveling in a four hour blizzard. It works as a light shell, or as a mid layer my system.
I have many R-1 pullovers and full zips. I live in SC so at work, in the winter , its the perfect piece to keep on all day. The techface version is a little thinner , a little more generously cut, and doesnt breathe as well. To be fair it probably blocks wind better and sheds water better than my regular R1. I'm 5'8" tall, and if I were 6'0" tall, this jacket would still be too long. The length of this jacket would get in the way of a lot of things - a harness for example, and many others.
Very light material but still manages to provide warmth. I've had several generations of the R1 and like this one the best. Issues with previous gens were the collar didn't lay down very well when not fully zipped, and the bottom of the jacket was too long and caused the front to bunch up when sitting down. Always great quality and clothing fits my frame well. The R1 Tech Face is somewhat lighter than I expected and will be used summer through shoulder seasons here in W. Oregon. The medium size is slim fitted to a degree that layering under it is really not an option.
Was looking for a light jacket to keep me warm during my walks near the beach. Also to protect me from the wind. Jacket felt like I was wearing a shirt. No protection whatsoever. On the plus side, the fit was great!
I purchased the R1 for the light weight design and the ability to keep me warm mountain biking and running errands in the snow. UPS delivered the jacket today. It was about 50 degrees when I tried it on, it fitted well and the cool air wasn't a factor. For the price you can't go wrong.
I wanted something a little warm, more breathable than a wind breaker, light, and bright (for the hunters). This is perfect for 30 degree F rides and I want to wear it all the time!
Not as thick as the previous version but its very comfortable and the techface can take on a pretty serious wind. I take this with me everywhere as a just in case layer. 6/190 and L fits great.
I had another R1 for about seventeen years, when I was a ski patroller and then for recreational skiing. For me it was perfect, I layered, polipro top, R1 and a shell for most days of skiing. Had to replace when I lost the other, though it was still doing it's job for me. Great gear
After 30 years of use my trusty Sunderland Golf wind shirt had finally outlived it's prime. So.... I needed a new outer layer for fall golf. Something with a windproof finish, light insulation and easy to move in. This is my new favorite jacket! I wear it for work, on weekends around town, on the trails and everything else in between. No frills very light jacket, comfortable and loose enough to wear layers. Sized up form fitting but medium would be fine (5'9" 165lbs). I have not had the opportunity to try this out yet, but have a back country camping trip planned in two weeks. You can bet this is the first thing I am packing. I enjoy this jacket and find it to be both very functional and looks good. For its weight it is quite warm. Good for a fall or spring morning. My only criticism is that it would be nice to have a chest pocket like most of the other Patagonias have. For those of us that we are reading glasses its nice to have that pocket.
I have three of these. My wife thinks Im nuts. But I wear them every day in Colorado shoulder season. I hike, boulder, ice climb, ski, snowshoe, bike, and run in them. I have two R1s now one with the hood in one not. These are fantastic layering pieces. I use a Merino underlayer for warmth and wicking and this as an outer layer. The full zip allows me to cool down or warm up depending upon what I’m doing. I really like the fact that it’s wind resistant and good in light spring shower situations and layers well.
I have the R1 TechFace jacket and hoodie. I love: grooves in fleece keep air circulating, keeping me comfortable over huge temperature range. Good fit, looks good, great for layering or by itself. And, important for me, unlike conventional fleece TechFace doesn’t get dirty as easy and animal hair doesn’t stick to it. I can wear black and don’t need... Read More to use lint roller.
I love the R1s decided to try techface. Hoping for more durable, less pilling, and less seed and burr attraction. I think it will be what I hoped for. Time will tell on durability.
I own the hooded version of this jacket. It's more weather resistant on wet or windy days, but it doesn't seem to be as warm as the older regular R1 zip up. It's great for weather in the high 50s and 60s. I hope they bring back the R1 zip-up that had the hand pockets! They seem to have gotten rid of it for the 2019 fall season.
compared to the standard or regular R1:
1. You get some DWR
2. You get a little less insulation
3. You get about the same wind resistance as a regular R1 in the wind... which is not much.
I was looking for a jacket that was very light and breathable and this works perfectly. It is a little tight, especially in the arm pits. I am 5'8 170 and got a medium.
Purchased this item but ended up returning it. It was too thin for my liking. A lot thinner than I had thought and thinner than the competitions jackets. Also, this seems to be an ongoing issue for me with all Patagonia items but the sizes are slightly off to what I am used to from most other brands. A small is always a little too big for me and a ... Love the R1 Techface, just think there could be a bit more of a tailored fit.
My old full zip R1 is pretty tired so gave this a shot without seeing it in person. Don't get me wrong, the jacket is well made, fits pretty well, etc., but it's not as comfy or as warm as the traditional R1 jackets, hoodies and 1/4 zips. R1 Techface Jacket
Very high quality, good fabric, resistant to the weather elements and light enough to not be bulky.
The weight of this jacket is quite light, making it the perfect companion for everything from everyday wear to the office, to hanging on the beach in the morning/evening, to hiking, to running/post-run, and as a light layer under a shell.
The fit is as expected, which is definitely not a given with Patagonia, but this piece is dialed in.

The zippered pockets are perfect and highly functional.
Overall the piece is pretty flawless from my perspective, having tried about 6-8 other styles in this category from Patagonia, it's the best.
Only downside is the price seems high for the lightweight nature of the piece. Considering there is substantial innovation going into the fabrics and one is helping to finance Patagonia's eco programs with every purchase, I'd say it's worth the price.
I'm the first month having this jacket in San Diego (July) Ive worn it everyday, usually mornings and evenings. I love it.
About time they got rid of the hood. I have the hoody, which is great, but with the hood being sized for a helmet, not a very useable hood... unless you walk around town in a helmet.
