Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the Torrentshell Waterproof/Rain Jacket. While this rain jacket will not be our top of the line, most breathable option, it should not be wetting out at all. There is a chance that it could be humidity you're feeling, or that the DWR finish which causes water to bead on the surface is starting to wear away. If this is the case, there are some steps you can take to replenish the DWR. A post-wash tumble dry on medium heat will help revive the water repellent DWR finish. The DWR can also be restored with a performance spray or wash-in treatment such as Storm Eco Proofer or Nikwax. Give that a go, and if it's still giving you trouble, feel free to [send it back](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html).

Excellent Jacket, WaterPROOF is a stretch
I absolutely love my Torrentshell. I've had it for about a year now and it is the perfect item for short trips through heavy rain or long days on the trail with mild showers. However, it is by NO MEANS waterproof. I went for a 4 mile hike in the pouring rain and about halfway through I would describe it as soaked through. That being said, it d... Read Moreries very quickly and works great for milder inclement weather. Still keeps you warm and drier even when soaked through.
Hi Cameron, you’re most likely seeing 'wet-out' of the outermost layer of the multilayered fabric. But water shouldn't be soaking through; it will be stopped by the membrane. The DWR (Durable Water Repellant) helps keep water from saturating this outer layer but can't keep it at bay forever.
You also may be feeling increased condensation on the inside of the jacket when moisture is present, since it's more difficult for water vapor to pass through to the outer layer when it is saturated.
If it's an older Torrentshell, there is a chance that the membrane has been compromised and is delaminating from the outer shell fabric; this would result in water entering the jacket since the membrane has lost its integrity.
With any of our waterproof/breathable jackets, the DWR layer is best preserved by washing and drying. Washing removes dirts (which can wick moisture into the outer fabric layer) and oils (which can clog pores of the membrane) from the outer shell fabric and the liner. This increases the life of the jacket as well as the performance.
If you feel that your jacket isn’t performing to our standards, please feel free to begin a warranty return under our Ironclad Guarantee. You can begin that process here, https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html.

Great Rainy Day Jacket
Its exactly what I imagined it would be. Thin, packable, and water resistant. It is now one of my wardrobe staples. Highly recommend!!
The jacket is top notch. I used it while trout fishing in the Cranberry Backcountry on 1-3-20. We biked I’m on a 40 degree day with drizzling rain. I wore it all day and stayed completely dry!! I purchased this jacket in 2017, so maybe the product has changed and my review no longer applies. FWIW, I bought the Torrentshell expecting typical Patagonia quality and I’ve been disappointed. This Jacket is so great! It arrived just in time for a rainy week and is holding up excellently. It's insulation works great and its large enough for a fleece or Nano Puff Jacket underneath. Two people have already complimented me on it. Also, the color is great! (Tasmanian Teal)
I got this jacket to keep the rain out during all 4 seasons. While it kept the rain out, I often found myself so sweaty after going cycling or hiking that it really didn't make a difference. Just what I was looking
Just what I was looking for to wear when raining or cool outside. Very happy with jacket.
I bought the men’s small. I have sufficient space to add an inner layer of jacket. Since it traps heat really well. I’ve used it in mid-November Chicago and the two-layer gets me around the city in ~15-20 °F temperature comfortably. The hood and collar shields my face from moderate snow/rain well.
I love this jacket. It's light, fits well, looks sharp and functional. I do wish it had an inside pocket for glasses and little stuff. Otherwise, this is the best deal in town!
I haven't used it in heavy rain but it did well in a light rain. I do wish it had at least one breast pocket for easy access to my phone. Also, the material is quite loud. Good fit, light weight and keeps the rain and wind out. Not super breathable but again this jacket is meant for more cold and rainy. Good for all outdoor activities in spring/winter/fall.
This jacket has a great somewhat fitted style, can still be worn over fleece. I’m 5’11” 170 lbs and medium works well. Hood is wonderfully adjustable. Can wear this at least 3 seasons.
Bought this in May for an upcoming trip to Ireland, it rains a lot there, so this was perfect. I wear it all the time when it rains or when its a little cold walking to class. Very light and compact for traveling.
My issue is the zipper which is not easy for me to zip up. I typically have to try 2 or 3 times, and when you mis-zip it gets stuck pretty bad. I often use it as a shoulder seasons layer during spring breakup, and as the rains come during the fall berry season.
It's also great layer for protecting myself from the wind.
Fit is great(rare in a rain jacket), zipper gets stuck from time to time because of the overlap(generally worth it for me). I decided to test the jacket. I pulled tight the hood, sleeves, and waist and walked up to the deck. A nice and light rain/wind-proof jacket but with one flaw
Made out of breathable nylon and H2No material looks like it can hold the rain and wind at bay, so not only a rain gear item but also a stylish windbreaker. which is where Patagonia lost the high marks. The hood storage with a string and hook is poorly designed (it unfolds as you move), and the way the collar looks with the hood stored leaves a lot... Read More to be desired, it exposes the H2No white plastic looking material in part of the collar, which makes the jacket look cheap and unwearable to the point that cannot be utilized as a classy or stylish windbreaker. The whole collar needs to be fleeced with a soft material (ideally with the same color of the jacket), and the hood needs to be redesigned similar to the North Face Resolve 2 jacket which looks really nice when the hood is stowed securely and nicely in the back of the jacket, without affecting the look of the collar, which allows it to be worn as a windbreaker. As far as its relaxed fit, it fits well to the contours of my body, and since I have a 44" chest and around 6 feet, the jacket fits me like a glove without been too tight or long but just right, and still with room to comfortably wear either my Micro-puff or Better Sweater as layer on those very cold and rainy days. I recommend this jacket if you want solely a rain-wind jacket on the trail that is breathable and surprisingly warm (I wore in cold and windy weather in the 50s with just a t-shirt and I was fine), but this piece does not transition from the backcountry to the city at all. The collar is weird and not presentable at all in an urban setting. I hope it gets redesigned, because it does an injustice to the rest of the jacket.

They did give me a short but friendly lecture about making sure I was caring for it properly. I would wipe it off with a sponge and mild soap because I know they say washing rainshells in a machine can wear them out faster, but apparently not so with the Torrentshell, they recommend machine washing, emphasizing keeping it clean over reducing the number of times you run it through the wash, but still even with my altering of care strategy, subsequent Torrentshells wore out fast. I want something durable that I can use in the field instead of just posturing in while walking to the coffee shop in Georgetown or the Hamptons or wherever 😉. Anyway, the most recent edition I got, they must have changed something up or incorporated feedback because I’ve had it for about two years (I think?) and it hasn’t started to delaminate at all like in the past. I like everything about this jacket. It fits me really well...I'm 6"1" and 195 lbs. and bought a Large. There's plenty of room for a thick fleece jacket underneath. If you are wearing this as and outer shell with a coat and layers underneath it fits well. If you only wear a t-shirt under this it is way too big. It does what a rain jacket is supposed to do - keep you dry. It isn't super breathable, but at the same time I'm not completely soaked from my own sweat within. As someone has mentioned, after a couple rains, the jacket was no longer waterproof. I am quite disappointed, particularly given the cost. I just thought a Patagonia jacket would be worth the cost.
Just got this to deal with some heavy rain. Worked great. I can understand the zipper issue, but as others have mentioned, just need to be careful. The jacket is fine, I'm just kinda frustrated at this "simplified" hook and loop thing for stowing the hood when not in use. The new one is nowhere near as good. The fabric is thinner, which is good in that you don't tend to overheat as much, but it gets caught in the zipper really easily. Today I had it packed down (stuffed into the intended pocket). When I get home from hiking,I took it out of my pack. The thin fabric was caught in the zipper, and I couldn't get it unstuffed.
My roommate (skilled with repairs, craftsy, art student, capable of doing basic clothing repairs) wasn't able to get it unstuck either. Now I have to go through the hassle of shipping it back, paying for the return shipping, and waiting for a return to process. The coat is stuck inside the stuff-sack.

This is the first time I've ever felt really let down by a piece of gear from Patagonia. So I bought this jacket for when it randomly rains during work while I'm touring on the road. The hand cuffs worked very well by keeping water out,the hood tightens down very nicely to provide the same effect, and the material in general guards the rain pretty efficiently. When the rain is pounding pounding I feel like no matter what jacket you have on its going to be uncomfortable and you will get a bit wet but mild to moderate rain .. this jacket works better than anyone I've tried. Def happy I bought this. I am 5'10' 175 and the large fits literally perfect. Only flaw I found was that the zipper does get stuck when trying to do it fast .. I just am careful every time I zip mine up and its fine. Go for it.
Great in the rain - no seepage like some lesser made rainjackets. Also provides good wind resistance and I often wear this over a base layer in cold or snowy conditions.
I love my jacket. It's kept me dry in all kinds of rain the last few months. I typically run hot and this jacket is perfect. It's so light and breaths well and super easy to pack up for storage. My favorite jacket I've owned by far.
First off,I'm the biggest Patagonia fan and have stuck by their gear for a while now. Everything has been super tough and lasted years of hard use. Which brings me to this review. I'm only on my second season of wearing my torrent shell and I don't actually wear it throughout the winter,so I haven't used it for a full year yet. ... Read MoreWhen the rain really starts to come down I still get wet around my belly. Also some of my contents in my pockets get a bit wet too. So,it appears the zippers aren't really waterproof.
Other than that - the fit is great for us tall lanky folk. It's still a tough coat, easy to move in,great price. Just doesn't seem to keep my torso fully dry when the rain starts to come down hard.
This jacket has been great so far. It has been awesome in the rain so far. The adjustable hood is great and makes it nice and secure around my head so it doesn't blow off my head with the wind. The sleeves are a tad long but barely and nothing I can't live with. Otherwise fits perfect. 5'11" 210 I've gotten lots of complime... Read Morents on the jacket from others.
first, love ya Patagonia. But,I've had my jacket for about a month now and only about 50% of the time does the zipper zip up on the first try. Not sure why the waterproof zipper was discontinued! It was wayyy better.
Living in southern California, this jacket has only had light use,so I've been disappointed with its durability. Fortunately,Patagonia stands behind their products and has replaced 2 of these.
This has the features I want, and is not loaded down with things I do not need. Light weight, pit zips, pockets, hood. Normal Patagonia quality. Good value (on sale :)) I bought a Houdini jacket, but exchanged for this. It is a little heavier, and has a few extra features - still very light weight packs down to a small package.
The main reasons you should buy this: price, packability, performance and look.
You're not breaking the bank with this jacket, and yet,it works wonderfully. I've had it in torrential rain, international trips and on city tours.

What I w... Read Moreish this jacket had was inside pockets. Ideally,I'd have two inside pockets parallel to the outside pockets, along with a breast pocket for your phone, etc.
Otherwise,it's a good looking jacket at a decent price that's also built to last. (That's good enough for me.)
Would I buy this again, yep,I sure would. But hopefully I don't have to for a while, but I'd stick with it.
The zipper is the worst design I have ever had. Instead of having a single film layer they have a double panel zipper cover. The zipper will get stuck at the neck every single time making you wish both 1. It wasn't raining 2. You went with another rain jacket.
I wear this year-round (over fleece in winter) so it was time to replace the Torrentshell I bought in 2014. The new fit doesn't work at all-- old L fit perfectly, but new L is huge (but M won't fit over a fleece); substantial gap between current M and L sizes. Sadly will have to find a waterproof/packable elsewhere.
Upgraded my rain gear to the orange torrentshell (plus one for witty name) to be more visible on the road during my commutes. Great everyday rain jacket but also bonus for cycling
Got this baby stuffed in my Paxat 32l year round. Works great for casual wear as one would expect, but I haven't found a non Gore-tex shell that works as hard as this jacket. Great shell that got me through this record breaking wet NorCal winter. I found it runs a bit more fitted than other jackets so I went up a size. I'm normally a M,but returned that and went L for a little more coverage and so I can wear it in colder weather with a lightweight down sweater under it.
I have usually used a women's Torrentshell, but they have been recut to fit close to the body. This is the most similar to the older Rain Shadow jacket. It works great, fits great, but sure is noisy. Noise doesn't effect performance, but sure wish it could be quieter. Love the red color.
I bought this jacket to head into spring snowboarding,as well as classic PNW shoulder season storms,to stay dry and hopefully be able to layer up. So far, both have easily been accomplished. Here is where it can improve: the material is loud. You are never walking alone with this jacket... even in deep forests, you will be accompanied by a pretty loud and distracting sounding material that's a bit like crumpling up a paper bag. I never liked it,but it may be lessoning. Either i'm getting used to it,or it's dampened over the year I'm not certain. But I would still call it loud, and I still don't like it. To me,its the major reason why you may not want to buy this jacket.
Second, there are only two pockets (could't we add just one more, maybe for tissues on the inside?) and they are slightly too shallow. Several times I've had my glasses case fall out of the pockets, and this is a clear negative. The men's better sweater vest,as a point of comparison,is larger and I never have this problem.
Yes,I would buy this again.. but I'd love to get these changes to the product and make it simply exceptional.
I bought jacket and pants so I could keep hiking during No Cal recent deluge. keeps me dry and is comfortable to wear. Only complaint is hood is difficult to adjust. Good value for Patagonia quality. This jacket in yellow with yellow pants look sharp (I think)
I travel 48 weeks a year for work. I spend most of my time in North America with occasional trips to Europe or Asia. Even though I have an XXL,the Torrentshell packs down to a ridiculously small roll (about the size of a can of soda). It also weighs next to nothing so it disappears into my bag until needed.
It has never let me down, keeping me dry ... Read Morein heavy rain and wind. The hood is absolutely perfect. In all the jackets I've ever owned or tried on,I've never found a hood that so simply adjusts to perfectly protect my head without impairing my vision. It is super stable and doesn't flap around and does an excellent job sealing out the weather when cinched down.
The jacket also breathes exceptionally well, yet doesn't feel drafty. If I could change one thing,I'd want a chest pocket to stow glasses or other small items. I'd be ok with it inside or outside the shell. Even without the extra pocket, this has been the best rain gear I've owned. The little details make all the difference - the zipper covers are notched at the bottom to facilitate starting the zipper easily, and the storm-flaps never jam the zipper yet do an outstanding job keeping out the rain and wind.
I am 6'0",250 lbs. and the XXL fits with enough room to layer underneath. I typically wear an XL in Patagonia regular fit items, but went with the XXL to provide flexibility with layering over both outdoor gear or a suit.
110% satisfied and highly recommended.
I bought this jacket because I wore out a Patagonia outer shell I purchased 25 years ago. It has been on a number of treks and around the world with me several times. Not what you want to be doing in the pouring down rain. Never had these problems with my old jacket. The zippers still work fine. This is the last time I'll make an online purchase.
It's hard to find affordable gear that will stand up to daily use,Patagonia Torrentshell Jacket is a great piece of gear and Patagonia has done it's consumers a service by making it affordable as well!
I've been buying Patagonia products since the mid-80s and this is the first time I've purchased something from them that didn't work for me. And I really hate to post a negative review as I've purchased many dozens of products from them and am,in fact, wearing 3 of their products now.

I have long arms relative to my body size so buying anything long sleeve is very hit and miss, but was very pleased to find that this jacket fits me very well. Their "carbon" color is bafflingly green. Carbon means carbon steel,it is ALWAYS grey. Can't imagine what they were thinking,at least call it "carbon green". It also looks grey online if you don't look closely,at least it did on my phone. Be careful.

I had the 2012 version of the Men's Torrentshell Jacket, and it was fantastic. I don't remember exactly how much adjustability it had but I can't remember ever messing with the hood as you have to with the new one here (let's just call it the 2016 version, although I am not sure exactly if it's '16 or '17).
So I go... Read Moret the 2016 version a few months ago and not only could I not figure out how to adjust the hood, only to find out that the press-cinch buttons are sewn into the garment itself, but the latitudinal cinch cord itself was not sewn around its anchor points properly,it was just floating in the hood. So on one hand my bad review is in terms of what I regard as bad design, but it was also just defective. Regarding the former,I don't understand the idea of subcutaneous press-cinch buttons, they easily twist up and there's no way to see how to unravel them.
Speaking from experience of my 2012,which I never had to adjust the hood on at all,I'm a much bigger fan of LESS MECHANICAL PARTS as they are clearly ALWAYS the breaking point or confusion point.
My 2012 jacket was worn so much that it simply fell apart from, and I used the credit to get the Men's Nano-Air Light Hoody, which have nothing but good things to say about, although it isn't waterproof and is a very different product,I'm just saying, that item is great.
I have been wearing this jacket since 2008. It was the first upscale jacket I ever owned. I wear it year round - with a down vest during the colder winter months. Read Morehings went backwards instead of forwards. There are a bunch of small issues. The front zipper is a little harder to use as you have to make sure both flaps are out of the way. Also I miss the velcro flap as a lot of times I would just snap the velcro flap in a few places instead of zipping for speed and breathability. The zipper pulls on the side pockets and pit zips have lost the pull tabs that were present on the old one. The H2NO logo on the sleeve is now printed instead of stitched. There are also some big issues. There is no longer a mesh pocket on the inside so many times I go to put something inside and there's nothing there. Next is the neck tag, which another reviewer also mentioned. The tags and loops constantly scratch my neck if I'm wearing a shirt without a collar and is very annoying. Also,I don't like the way the neck lies,as when the hood is down, the inner lining is exposed.
I purchased this the evening I met an events coordinator for Patagonia. It is exactly the gear I needed to prepare for the coming months of hiking. Great coat for layering and wind and water protection.
An excellent light weight jacket that is waterproof with under arm zippers for ventilation. Beyond build quality,it's guaranteed to perform for life, outside of normal wear and tear.
What I like: simple design, not overly shaped; hand pockets placed where hands naturally go (not above a hypothetical backpack hipbelt; it's pretty easy to click open a hipbelt for the few seconds you need to retrieve something while hiking); lightweight; waterproof/breathable; no extraneous bells and whistles; soft, not stiff and crinkly materi... Altogether, though,it's a really nice jacket.
I purchased this jacket because it was the cheapest of Patagonias Line-Up. Yes,it feels a bit,'plastic-bag-y'. I use it for off-track bush bashing, mostly, and as back-packable all purpose rainwear. This is an amazingly comfortable and versatile rain shell. The old closure had Velcro on the storm flap that would occasionally get stuck in my beard. The new one has modified storm flaps with no Velcro, making it a lot more comfortable.
My only complaint is that the two-piece storm flap occasionally gets stuck in the zipper, particularly at the bottom. I don't mind so much because I am gentle with zippers, but if you're looking to grip and rip you're going to have a bad time.
I had a great online experience, prompt delivery, and I am pleased with the jacket expect for the tag in the neckline, which is bothersome when wearing the jacket with a t-shirt. Was there a reason why the tag was moved to neckline? My girlfriend has an older torrent jacket and her tag is below the neckline, which I believe is a better location.
I've never really believed in the whole breathable but waterproof concept,or liked shells with a liner or bunch of pockets. Just a simple waterproof shell, light and not overly ugly. This works.
I bought this jacket because I was taking my family skiing to Vail and needed a new ski jacket. Even though this jacket is just a shell, with the proper Patagonia layering underneath,it still performed like a champ. Thanks to Patagonia for making quality apparel that works!
Waterproof, light, and can take layers underneath. I already own this in different colors from previous years and am happy to be able to purchase this unchanged Patagonia product.
I have only had this jacket for a few weeks, but I'm very happy with it. Yesterday it kept me dry for a rainy walk. It fits well and seems to be solidly constructed. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I think 5 stars requires gear to hold up over long-term use,and I can't attest to that yet.
I bought this three months ago and wow it is a great product. It is a great rain type jacket and can be used as a light windbreaker as well. Nice and lightweight.
Purchased and wore during one of the rainiest fall seasons I can remember and it works great. It looks good,is comfortable, and most importantly keeps me dry. It also stuffs inside of its own pocket which can be very useful for packing.
Perfect for use over nano puff when fishing. Great water resistance, comfort and proportions for an outer layer or stand alone. Only negative is that zipper tends to stick.
It is warm enough to withstand 50 degrees F with a decent breeze at night. Very nicely designed hood that isn't too bit but also not tight. It packs small and is incredibly light. If it freezes,I put on a fleece and use it as a liner for this jacket; thanks Patagonia. Make the difference you want to see in the world!

As I've worn it multiple times now,I do have a few complaints: first, the sleeves. My former jacket had a loose elastic cuff w/ the Velcro tightener, which was perfect. It didn't slip over my hands and I could crank it down if the need arose. The new jacket just has the Velcro. My arms are shorter which means I have to do and undo the Velcro every time I put it on or take it off. I can't push up the sleeves either. It's just an overall nuisance and by far,my biggest complaint.
The other issue is the zipper. It comes over my hips which mean I have to bend over a bit to zip it. First,it would be nice to have a dual direction zip for more comfort in the car, especially as I have the fight the zipper every single time I attempt to zip it up to keep from getting it hooked in the zipper flaps in front of and behind the zipper. Needless to say,I don't unzip it before I get in the car - at least for short trips.
Like I said, overall,I love it. It is what I wanted it to be - single layer, vented, effective, with zip pockets, and a nifty hood. However,I would recommend re-evaluating the sleeve cuffs.
