Makes me look scruffy after every use
I've been wearing this daily for 2 weeks since I purchased it and every day I take it off, my t-shirt, or item underneath it, is covered in feathers. I have other down items that do not have this issue so I'm unsure why this continues to leak feathers.
Hi Matthew, with goose down, it is completely natural for some of the down and feathers to escape through the fabric, particularly in the seams. The sharp quills of the feathers can poke tiny holes in the fabric and work their way through to the outside. It is normal for this to happen, particularly in newer products when the down has not had an opportunity to settle. There is no reason for alarm, and this phenomenon should not affect the performance of your jacket. To minimize the amount of down that escapes, simply pull the down back in to the jacket and massage the area to help the hole close up. It is important that you do not pull the down out of the jacket, as that will only exacerbate the problem by creating a larger hole. Also, washing your item can help encourage the down to settle more quickly. In rare cases, a material defect may cause excessive down leakage in a product. If you find the suggestions above ineffective, you are welcome to send your jacket to us as a [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html).
Nice balanced down jacket
Really nice jacket, comfortable, well balanced for daily wear. Not too puffy, not too thin. Not too tight, not too relaxed. Not too shiny, and I like the newer nylon fabric. Patagonia has improved so much with this iteration and I am so happy to have reacquired this versatile hoody. The fit on this garment is much more streamlined than the previous years. The back dips a little which is something I prefer than a level bottom cut all the way around. Helps when bending over. I also really like what they have done with the hem on the cuff. I feel like it will retain its composure longer and wont stretch out. The hood is also a welcomed improvement. Years ago I had this same jacket and always felt the hood was too large. That jacket was from the mid 2000s . This hood has a very good, tight fit that hugs the head with great adjustability and just enough room to go over my bike helmet and still be able to zip all the way up. The warmth factor is top notch and the jacket is shockingly light weight. Ive been using it coupled with my triolet jacket for cold NYC bike commutes and often find myself needing to dump heat. Overall I am very pleased with this jacket and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great layering piece or stand alone jacket.

Great fit, insanely warm, and very comfortable. A must have. The only downside is I wish Patagonia could figure out a way to keep the down feathers from poking through the jacket and falling out. Hi Luis, we're so sorry to hear about the down leakage you experienced and the tight fit of the XL size. That definitely sounds uncomfortable. Please note, shedding of down will be more significant on a new jacket, and it will lose what seems to be a large amount of down in the beginning. This is totally normal for any down product and is nothing to be alarmed about- this typically happens especially with higher quality down. When you wear a jacket or use a blanket for the first few months, the feathers tend to move around as they settle and the sharp quills on the feathers can poke through the seams. The more the down settles and quills soften, the less down leakage you'll experience. That being said, please feel free to start a [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html) at any time as we want you to be completely satisfied with all of your Patagonia purchases.
Too lightweight and smells of wet dog
For the high cost of this down jacket, and the hype surrounding it, I was left somewhat deflated by its lack of warmth and resilience to the cold. Plus, the coat continues to smell of wet dog, despite three washes to date. Although you often get what you pay for, you can also often pay for what you get. Such is the case here.

Within a year, a significant amount of down comes out and it affects the performance of the jacket and also leaves down all over your clothes which is annoying. As for the overall performance of this jacket, it is simply amazing. I could wear this jacket in 70 degree weather or 30 degree weather and feel 100% comfortable in both scenarios. The way that it keeps your body temp normal is like nothing else on the market. As for the fit, the length is true to size but there is some extra width in the belly. It doesn't really bother me. Also, I have an extremely large head and I can get the hood over it which is great. Overall, if you are looking for a jacket that you would like to keep for a long time I wouldn't recommend this to you. However, if you are looking for a jacket that will give you a couple months of god-tier performance and are ok with having to replace it frequently, then I'd say this is the jacket for you.
Thank you for the review, Ivan. We're sorry to hear of your frustrations with this jacket. Down poking out is actually normal for all down products, it tends to happen more frequently when an item is new because the down hasn't had a chance to settle yet. An easy way to fix this is to pull the down back into the jacket by pulling it from behind the face fabric and rubbing the exit point. We wouldn't recommend pulling the down out because it will enlarge the hole and make it possible for more down to escape in the future. If you keep this habit up, it will reduce the frequency that down pokes out and it will keep the down within the jacket; eventually the down will settle as well. If you find that the down has lost it's loft over time, this can be fixed with a wash and dry. Here are care instructions you can apply to all of our down products: You'll want to close all zippers, snaps and velcro. Machine wash it in cool water with a mild detergent (no bleach, no fabric softener, preferably powder) and then tumble dry on low heat (no fabric softener) with a couple of clean tennis balls or dryer balls. This will fluff the down, and help to refresh and tighten up the fabric around the down. It might take a few rounds of drying since you'll be drying on low. We hope this helps, but please feel free to reach out to [customer service](https://help.patagonia.com/s/?_gl=1*1klnbfn*_ga*NjQ4MDAzMDY0LjE2ODI5NTAxOTA.*_ga_1SYPSJZYJ5*MTY5NTkyNDg2OS4zNjMuMS4xNjk1OTI1MDg5LjU4LjAuMA..) with any other questions.

I received my down hoody in the middle of a heat wave and haven't yet had a chance to use it. But, based on owning similar jackets (both by Patagonia and otherwise), I can provide some insight. Read Morehave room for a layer like a fleece or even a nano air jacket with ease, but the down hoody isn't too big to wear on its own. I think Patagonia has gotten better about consistency of its sizing and if you ordinarily wear a large in other Patagonia garments, this should fit well. The build quality and materials also seem nice and in line with what I would expect from Patagonia. Patagonia notes that this down hoody has more fill than previous versions, and the jacket does seem quite lofty for its category. Now the bad - the jacket was packed very poorly. In an apparent effort to reduce excess packaging, the jacket was not wrapped in a plastic bag, but instead was placed directly in a paper shipping bag. The intention was commendable, but the end result was not. The tape used to seal the paper shipping bag somehow was also accidentally affixed to the face fabric of the down hoody. I was able to carefully pull the down hoody from the tape, but this procedure required some care and patience to ensure I didn't damage the garment. Even when I freed the jacket from the tape, the adhesive left a nasty residue on the jacket. I was eventually able to clean most of the residue off, but this took a good deal of time and there's still a bit of tackiness that probably will require a machine wash to get off. I understand that Patagonia wants to reduce waste (especially plastic waste), and I support that goal, but the execution here was not what I expected from a top tier outdoor clothing producer.

Your satisfaction is always guaranteed so you're welcome to [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html).
The fit is perfect. Not too tight, not too lose. It sits just a tad below the hips, so not too long and not too short. The sleeve length is perfect. And the elastic wrist cuffs have room for gloves but also not to loose or baggy. Definitely a jacket that I can hike in and move around in for indoor and outside adventures. The material feels thin but... Read More reports say it durable. But I am staying cautious and not using it for climbing or adventures that it might snag a sharp edge or thorn bushes. Itslight and warm. Its super comfortable! It has all the features you are looking for. I narrowed my selections down to this jacket and the Arcteryx Cerium. The Cerium jacket is thicker and much tighter, needing to size up. And the Cerium sat lower beyond the hips. The Cerium is warmer, almost too warm. The Cerium did not feel as comfortable. This Down Sweater Jacket will not do well in the rain but no down jacket will. This jacket is just right in every detail. Its Goldilocks!
Valuable part of my system
I am 56 years old and have been an outdoor/adventure photographer for 25 years, so I've witnessed and experienced Patagonias progress for a while. The down sweater has been an integral part of my system since it was introduced. In conjunction with good base layers, fleece and sometimes a waterproof shell this jacket has saved my bacon numerous... Read More times. This version is no exception. I particularly like the new hood design, as it allows me good peripheral vision and can be cinched down if need be. No one piece of gear does everything, learn how to layer and you'll be prepared for just about any situation.
Awesome except the zipper
This is my 3rd down sweater. Compared to other brands the warmth to weight ratio of an 800 fill jacket is perfect. Aesthetically, I really like the design. The smaller baffles keep the down where it supposed to be. The large stow pocket makes it easy to attach to a harness, over all it is an excellent jacket. All three of my jackets have had the zi... Read Morepper break. The upper portion broke on the jacket within a year. A local seamstress replaces for a better zipper but I wish Patagonia would work on this design flaw. It would also be nice if the zipper was 2 way so that we could bring it up and out of the way of a belay loop.
Super disappointed with the new version
Had to return. As mentioned in many reviews, Newest version has Ill fitting, non -elastic cuffs, and has done away with the nice fleece- lined neck fabric. Real shame to change such a perfect product.
Thank you for this feedback on the latest revision of the Down Sweater Hoody; we appreciate your input! We're sorry you were disappointed with this model and happy to see you've been able to return a jacket that wasn't going to make you happy. We will share your feedback with our designers. Thank you, Alex!
Some improvements, some really strange design choices
I own one of the older models of the Patagonia down sweater and have always wanted to get one with a hood for days where the hood would come in handy. Scooped up this down sweater hoody and was pleasantly surprised by a few updates/changes: - hem length seems just a hair shorter. This is much better for me as I have a shorter torso and I really l... Read Moreike the way this fits - really feels warmer w/ the update. Could be just that its new, but its definitely warmer than my old jacket. - the material seems slightly more durable as advertised. Still not a super durable jacket obviously, but slightly less worried about wearing it while doing chores outside or in active situations. Updates/changes that have really boggled my mind and caused quite a bit of frustration: - no elasticity around the cuffs. This makes no sense and its really distracting and very unpleasant. The jacket is warmer, but if there is any wind its going straight up your sleeve. I almost returned the jacket based on how distracting this feature is. - no liner around the neck. My wife has the previous model down sweater hoody and hers has this really soft material on the inside where the jacket meets your face. Overall Id still recommend this jacket. I hope the next version sees a return of some of the old features.
My husband loves this coat! He says it is so warm and that it also feels light and not too heavy. He loves the red/blue color. He also loves the way the hood is made. It rains a lot here and can get pretty windy but the hood always stays on! He wears it every day and is very happy with it!
Very warm jacket for the weight
I bought this jacket to replace a larger, bulkier down jacket in order to be able to layer underneath a gore-tex shell. I'm still shocked at how much warmer it is than the bulkier coat and how much lighter it is. My only issue is with the hood being a little tight, especially with a hoodie underneath, but it's an easy workaround.
Light and Warm
So warm and wind resistant for its weight. Hood fits great - with or without a hat and fits nicely around my neck. Zippers work smoothly and the pockets are beautifully sized for anything I need to carry. I have a slight sizing problem as I am somewhere between a medium and large - so I sized up to a large which makes the length perfect for me but ... Read Moreleaves a bit too much airspace inside the jacket for my skinny frame to heat up when first walking out into the cold. After 5 minutes or so I generate enough body heat that its not a problem. I also own a Nanopuff hoody (for warmer days, wet weather and to use as an under layer under my DAS parka - making me invincibly warm). The Nano Puff medium fits me perfectly This is the only down item I own as I generally refuse to buy down for ethical reasons. Patagonia has provided one of the only ethically sourced down items I know of. That combined with their commitment to fair labor practices and the kind of quality that lasts a lifetime makes this a very satisfying item to own and wear. I confess, I look forward to putting it on every morning. Altogether- its a great piece and well worth the money - like most Patagonia products
I had this jacket for about a week and returned it. The zippers kept snagging and wore thin gloves and it was hard to zip. Hood was not tall enough when I engaged the straps to tighten it. It brought up the bottom of my jacket and made my navel area cold. Cuffs were also loose and brought in cold air. Really wanted to like this jacket! But if over ... Read More6 foot tall not worth it. Tis' The One!
I bought a whole host of jackets for the winter period here in Cape Town, temperatures range from low 40F to mid 50F (4C - 15C) , but it's the rain and wind that will get ya here. I knew the down jacket would be warm, and that it was. In a lot situations, I only needed a good baselayer underneath and that was it. What blew me away was the ... Read Morewind protection (pun intended). I would wear this walking home in the low 40s with howling wind with only a baselayer and flannel underneath and the cold wind would not penetrate the jacket at all. This instantly made it my favorite jacket. The down can compress into a tiny size that makes it great for traveling, and the hood covers your entire head and is adjustable for a tighter/looser fit. As a bonus, I also love how simple it looks, allowing you to walk into most settings without looking under-dressed or informal. I loved it so much I also got the vest version that works well too outdoors.

So comfy and warm
When we received this in the mail I was blown away with how thin it was. Like is this really gonna keep anything warm?!? But W O W!!!! Its so comfy and it for sure keeps you warm. Read More fits nice and you wont over heat as somehow its breathable? But the best part is not feeling necessary to take it off when you get in the car bc its not stiff. The name fits it well.
Warm, more down
This is my 2nd navy down sweater and my first with hood. Love the hood. Increases warmth. Also love the 30% increase in down. Would rather have the warmth and slightly more weight. So far, durability seems good. Not sure I would wear it in a thorn bush, but careful wear should allow this item to last and last. 6 foot 2 inch, 225. The large fit well... as comfy as a sleeping bag!
This is a replacement jacket for a previous hoody... I love it BUT it doesn't have the giant, roomy hood like the other one had... I like the giant hood rather than the more fitted one on this new garment. I love the new color! It's the yellow! Super warm with a great fit
This jacket is extremely comfy and warm. I sometimes have issues with the hoods on jackets not fitting comfortably and this one works great for me. The ability to use the jacket as its own stuff sack is great for portability and packability and I can't wait to really make use of it on my next backpacking trip.
Ultra warm, soft, and lightweight
This is my first Patagonia jacket purchase, and I don't know why I waited so long. This jacket is perfectly warm, ultra soft, and super light weight. I never have to be cold again! I live in a mildly temperate climate, but it is perfect for layering. I am a woman, but I purchased the mens jacket because I wanted the Cabin Gold color and the ho... Read Moreod. It did not disappoint! Im typically a womens medium, and the mens small fits great. It is a little longer in the torso and broader in the shoulders, but that only adds to the comfort for me. Love it, awesome customer support
I've had a few down jackets from Patagonia over the years and they've been excellent. Even when they have issues (e.g. zipper teeth break off), Patagonia has quickly remedied in a no-hassle, full service way. Love the fit and plushness of this particular jacket - warm yet seems to adapt to a wide range of temps (e.g. low 30's to low ... Read More60's) without shivers or sweat. And, the additional pockets on this latest version are great.
Previous version was better!!
Bring back the elastic cuffs around the wrists!! Without them cold air gets through. And bring back the fleece material on the chin/zipper area. It really is warmer with the fleece on your chin when its cold.

Great fit and quality
I bought this after trying several other brands. This jacket fits great, I'm 6'0 and the L was the perfect fit. It left plenty of room in the chest and sleeves for movement. The sinch around the waist keeps the cold air out and my body nice and toasty. The hood covers well and has an adjustment to tighten over your head. The only negative... Read More I can find is the jacket is a bit loose around the wrists. So I have to tuck my gloves into it to keep drats out. But it's a small price to pay.
TERRIBLE QUALITY, NOT WARM AT ALL
My how Patagonia has fallen the last few years... I have a few older versions of this jacket and this new version is TERRIBLE!! Not warm AT ALL very thin and the shell material seems so thin that it would tear very easily which I guess is why they give you patches in the pocket when you buy it!?!? No elastic cuff material on the end, No fleece mate... Read Morerial on the inside of the top of the zipper so when it is zipped up the cold polyester just rubs your chin now. Little things I guess but things that I liked in older versions. I love what Patagonia stands for but your attention to details and quality of your products has really fallen downhill the last few years! I get you don't promote consumerism but at least make a product that would actually last.. Let's be honest this jacket and most of your new products just won't stand the test of time like your older versions....
Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review and we are very sorry to hear about your disappointment with this product. This is my third Down Sweater Hoody over the past 15 years. I have have tried other brands over the years but made a call several years ago that Patagonia is my only brand. The products cant be beat, service and repairs is unmatched and what the company stands for, well stands alone in doing what's best for people and the world we live in.
A nice revision of a classic
I have the older non-hoody version of the down sweater and I wanted a hoody version. I read the reviews of the new design and had some concerns, but decided to see for myself. The material is very soft and I prefer the pocket placement and design of the new design. I also like the sleeve and cuff design, I like how it sits slightly lower on my ha... Read Morend, which helps to keep them warm. It feels very comfortable, and I like that it's not tight. If it's truly cold, I'll wear gloves which will close the gap. The fit is indeed larger, but I'm sure it's intended for layering. However, when zipped up, the chest area is boxy. But, hey, it's a down coat and most are going to look boxy sometimes. This feels less urban than the last design, as if it is more closely targeted to outdoor use. I like that. And oh yeah, it's warm! The extra insulation is helpful. I'm loving this coat! It might be ideal for the product category it fits into.
Great Jacket - Black is not Black
Love this jacket - Very soft to the touch and light. The hoody is great, and the deep inside pockets are a great addition. Very warn and moves well well with your body while being active. The fit is a little roomier than I'd prefer, and the sleeves seem a touch long. The sleeve cuffs don't sinch up around my wrist as tightly as I'd... Read More like letting cold air enter the sleeves. NOTE: The black is not black - its much closer to a navy blue, and in my opinion, could have been labeled as such. If you hold it up next to another "Black" Patagonia coat, you'll clearly notice the difference. It still looks great - just not black
This jacket is, unsurprisingly, amazing.
Considering that I've had my other Patagonia puffy for 20+ years, it was a no brainer to buy another one. I wanted something with a hood and not black ... so this was it. I have no doubt that I'll get 20+ years out of this one as well. This one is so cozy and even if it fits a TINY bit small, it's perfect for what I need it for. I do... Read Moren't like to layer a lot because I get too hot, so a LS or SS tee with this, or a base later for a hike is perfect for me.
Warm jacket. Miss the old design
The old fit and feel of this jacket was much different. The cuffs were better. The pocket draw string is gone. They seemed to get cheap with the zipper this year too. No more comfortable zipper, just a string thats was burned, hoping it doesnt fray. Very warm stylish jacket other than that
Super warm and of so comfortable. Softest jacket from Patagonia that Ive owned
The new material they're using for their puff jackets are so soft and silky yet seems really durable. Really warm and comfortable. Best jacket in my wardrobe. Im a Patagonia customer for life because the gear just gets better and better. Fits perfect for my slim frame.
This is a great coat. The hood is a great added bonus. The small did not fit for a 140 pound 5 Foot 4 person so make sure to get a size Medium. I love that you can put a rain coat over this jacket and easily roll it up and tuck it in your bag. I liked the coat so much that I bought a second one without the hood.
Hoody Down Sweater
Last year I bought the Down Sweater. This year I bought the Hoody Down Sweater. I believe your quality has gone down since last year. The cuffs are certainly not a good as the Sweater's are.
Hey Edward, thank you for the review. We're sorry to hear that you feel like the quality has gone down with our Down Sweater Hoody. This season we released a redesign that uses NetPlus which is a fiber created from discarded fishing nets. We've also added 29% more down. We're not sure what it is about the cuffs that you're not a fan of, but we'd be more than happy to accept a return back.
