Top Notch Boarshort!
These are by far the best boardshorts I have owned. For me, fit has always been difficult....short legs and chunky quads/hams (and recently more dad bod than preferred) so generally I require a looser fit and have to size the waist up to have adequate room to function in. The overall fit is super comfortable and the amount of stretch in the materia... Read Morel is so optimal it gives a solid fit without looking like your shorts are sagging. I've had several pairs of wavefarer short over the years and they've outlasted all the other boardshorts I've owned. They can handle saltwater, chlorinated pools, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, hiking (to water), and even the less glamorous tasks of yard work without any issues with tearing or falling apart at the seams. The material does fade over time but shoot what holds up to UV rays anways? I appreciate the button in the fly and the lack of velcro because velcro destroys all my shirts and well...isn't comfortable at all when you need to use the fly. The zippered pocket keeps little items in place without the bulk and restriction when active in sports. Highly recommend these shorts if you spend a lot of time in the water. Shoot, they're great even if you aren't in the water!
What a run
My board shorts of 20 + years finally were laid to rest and unwearable anymore but a hell of run with them. Picked up these shorts knowing the old ones were not going to make it and I expect another 20+ from these. Great material and size medium fits perfect with room to snug down if needed. For sure one of my favorite all time Patagonia pieces.
Stellar for ocean and pool
Stellar for ocean and pool . I very much like this product for swimming but they are kind of stiff for dynamic sports on land and casualwear. These fit true to my size. I purchased 33. But just find the size that fits you best and stay with them. Good looking all around shorts
I like these boardshorts as well - although they are significantly different than the stretch planing or stretch hydropeak. These are a bit heavier with what feel like a more durable, thicker material. They also run smaller - I needed to go up one size in these shorts compared with the planing or hydropeak. Awesome! Though I do wish they made a shorter version for those of us who aren't using these as actual board shorts.

Never liked boardshorts--until now.
Look, I'm not going to pretend that I'm some bad assed surfer on here: I've done it a couple of times on a gigantic soft board but it was a total gas. Body surfing is my thing. But there was always something about a lack of a liner in the board shorts that bothered me, but I now have three pair of the Stretch Wavefarer board shorts b... And the stretchy-ness makes them move with me whether I'm making a boss football catch over the pool, or I'm bending over struggling with my beach chair. They dry quickly--I mean really quickly including the waistband that always seems to hold water on other shorts. I highly recommend them. The zippered with pull string pocket is a super cool plus because it is placed in a way that conforms with your hip without making it look like you're carrying your wallet into the water.
They simply do not hold up well
I have worn the regular Wavefarer shorts for years, and they wear like iron. I still have a couple of pairs that are many years old. But the stretch version is terrible. I have two pairs of them that are about 2 years old each, and both of them have developed splits in the rear seam. I'm a thin, athletic guy, so it's not like my posterior... Read More is putting tremendous strain on the seams. I tossed the first pair a month ago when it split. Now I notice that my other pair is also coming undone at the seam. While the stretch material is a little more comfortable than the standard version, between them running smaller (I had to go up a size for the same fit) and the badly sewn seams, I recommend you skip the stretch and get the regular Wavefarers instead.
Hi Julian! We're sorry to hear the boardshorts aren't holding up. Feel free to send them in for a return [here](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html#searchterm=return). We just ask that you wash them prior to sending them in.
Weird fit compared to a few years ago.
I'm 6'2", 185 lbs and consider myself fit. I've been wearing the Wavefarer short since 2013. Today's Wavefarer has definitely evolved away from the old fit. They went from a classic -- roomy but not quite baggy - fit in 2013, to a slimmer cut in 2016, to this fit, which feels baggy in the crotch but snug across the fly. Bec... Read Moreause it's stretchy, it doesn't feel as snug as it looks. I'll keep them because I like the colors/patterns, they were a good price, and I'll probably get used to them. If you're looking for the old Wavefarer, these are not them. I also sized up. In the old 2013 versions I was a consistent 34 which gave me a bit of room in the waist, but based on previous reviews, I ordered a 35 and they fit just a tad smaller than my 34's. But, again, they're stretchy so they don't feel as snug. Fingers crossed that Patagonia will bring back the original fit Wavefarer in a non-stretch fabric.

Better Boardshort????? I don't think so
These boardshorts are awesome. The simply fit differently than the stretch planning but are just as good. The key differences are as follows - more stretch, a little longer leg and a smaller waist. Just got my second & third pair of the Stretch Wavefarer. Had picked up a pair about two'ish years ago when the Patagonia logo was stitched in vs. the now sowed on patch: version 1 vs. version 2. Sizing is way off
I ordered these for my 18 yr old son in a size 28 waist. This is the pant size he wears in AE brand. He actually wears a belt. This kid is skinny! He is 6’1”. There is such a big difference between 34 to 38 waists for your shorts that I settled with the 36 as the closest fit, but for active use, they hang off two much. A movable feast!
The stretch fabric is comfy in the water or out, moving with me in every direction, even doubling as a workout short. Snugger than the Original Wavefarer

Pretty good board shorts
I've been hesitant to buy 'board shorts' as I never really cared for the drawstring closure in the front, but after trying a bunch of swimwear options,I actually liked these the best. Lastly,as another reviewer mentioned, the stitching seems a little weak,i.e. low stitch-counts,relative to other Patagonia products. But overall still a good swim trunk.
