Wonderful but run large
I absolutely love these but they run about one size large. I normally comfortably wear a 36 in Patagonia board shorts and these I would get a 35 or 34. They are extremely comfortable for water or land, and when I just want to be comfortable I grab these. Great for yoga, surfing, lounging, sleeping.
The material is very light and stretchy, feels nice against bare skin. The fly is not open, so when the cord is untied there remains a fabric barrier that connects the two "sides" of the fly. This allows for the waist to expand over one's hips while being pulled on and contract after they're on to keep them snug. I have been wea... Read Morering a Large (L) size in some of the other Patagonia pants and these have felt too tight under my pandemic belly so I ordered a 36 waist. These were too big and would have slid down in the surf, so I sized-down to a 34 waist, which I can get on over my also-ample hips when untied and tie snugly enough that they will not slide down when wet. I like the additional protection of a zipper on the side pocket in addition to the key loop. This review is exclusively regarding fit; I have not had a chance yet to use the product in the field, so, Four Stars until I can get in the ocean!
The BEST swim trunks
I was hesitant to spend this much money on board shorts, but when I got them, knew they were worth every Penny. The material is super light weight and stretchy in just the right way. great design but

Thank you for the review on our Men's Stretch Planing Boardshorts! It sounds like you may be more interested in a pair of shorts that come with a liner built in, if that's the case we'd recommend checking out the [Men's Baggies Shorts - 5"](https://www.patagonia.com/product/mens-baggies-shorts-5-inch/57021.html?dwvar_57021_color=JELY), they can work in or out of the water.
Not much to say here to upsell these shorts-very well made, quick drying and flattering to the physique. I'm 6'2" 205 and the 34" fits me PERFECTLY on all Patagonia board shorts. 35" is too big and 33" is definitely too small. The fit on these is perfect. Good enough that I have purchased a 2nd pair.
The only board shorts I will ever need
This is my second pair of these board shorts. They are easily the most comfortable swim trunks I have ever owned. They are so comfortable, I have found myself wearing them around the house on hot days. They dry ridiculously quickly and have a good amount of stretch to allow for any athletic endeavor.
Fabric is comfortable, and fast drying. May be a bit thin for some, but the thinness does not feel cheap, and contributes to the above benefits. The closure at the top is a little bit weird -- you may have to help make sure the fabric folds in the direction it's intended to. I would recommend, and buy again.
Favorite trunks; a bit of variation on sizing
I love these trunks and have had three pairs over the years. The material feels good on the skin, is durable, and allows me to move when surfing. The pocket is helpful for bar in water. One glitch, the lighter pair that I have a tighter and revealing.
Comfortable, doesn't chafe, versatile
I wear these boardshorts sailing, paddling, around the house, and at the beach. These boardshorts work well under paddling gear when I take the outrigger or surfski out. They dry quickly and are comfortable. The sizing runs just a tad large, so if I was surfing in them alone (not likely in the 50 degree water of the Strait of Juan de Fuca) I would ... Poor Fly/Questionable Durability
Good things first: These shorts are super comfortable. The material is super light and breathable and dries extremely quickly. The stretch is awesome, allowing excellent range of motion. Now the bad: The fly on these shorts is in desperate need of some velcro to keep it closed. As it stands now, every time you cinch up the shorts, the fly bulges o... Read Moreutward awkwardly. It's not like it's revealing anything, because it's closed inside the fly, but it looks pretty awkward. You have to constantly fiddle with it to get the fly to lay flat. Additionally, I have concerns about the durability of these shorts. I understand that a stretch material is generally going to be less durable than a non-stretch one. However, I noticed some small wear in the seat of these shorts after only one use in a swimming pool. Didn't give me confidence that the shorts would last very long. I ended up returning them.

Fantastic short with a minor issue
As the title says, it's a great short: lightweight, dries fast, extremely comfortable (no chaffing) and it has the pocket for your wax comb. The only design flaw I could bring up is that the pocket zipper closes the pocket by pulling it from the back to the front of your thigh. Well, as you're laying flat on your board, the zipper may scr... Read Moreatch the board. Therefore I've decided to leave it open at all times and not to keep anything in the pocket while on the water.
Getting the job done.
I've been a loyal Patagonia customer since 1984. I buy and use all kinds of your gear, and without fail it has never let me down. Great board shorts
overall really like these. good comfortable fit, nice stretch in the material, dry fast. the material is thin and soft (in a good way). Only somewhat negative I would say is that because of the material they are somewhat "revealing" in the crotch area. Nothing obnoxious, just something to be aware of.
Runs VERY big!
My husband normally wears a 34-35, so I errd on the side of caution and got the 35. I should have sized DOWN! I need to return them for a 33. They are HUGE! Also, there is no liner, so if youre like me, and were purchasing them for a husband for swim trunks these are not for that.

Best boardshorts available
Ive had boardshorts from all the big companies over the years and these are by far the most comfortable. Fit well, no chafe, overall feel amazing. I would have given these board shorts a 5 star for fit and quality until my recent surfing trip. Lightweight and comfortable
These are my go to board shorts for travel now. Since they're so lightweight, tossing them into any bag is a no-brainer, giving me the option to jump into a pool or stream whenever. However, I've also found them perfect as a pajama replacement as well. Dual use, love it.
Favorite all-purpose board-shorts!
Really nice cut on these shorts, runs true to Patagonia sizing as declared on the associated fit / page for the garment - make sure to match your 'nominal' size to the associated fit(s). Nice feel, easy to move in
I purchased these mainly for yoga. I have worn a size 36 for years but recently have lost some weight. I would actually have done better with a size 34 but they still fit great and feel amazing. Nice shorts, but...
I liked the shorts from the moment I saw them and needed a pair for the end of summer, but to my surprise the size was way too large, did not fit the way I thought it would.

Best boardshorts I have ever owned!
I do a ton of body boarding and paddle boarding and most shorts chaff and irritate my inner thighs. These are the first shorts I have owned that I can spend the day in the water in comfort! They dry faster than any other shorts I have ever had and the stretch makes them so comfy! Bought a second pair
Frankly these shorts are not appropriate for mix public use. The profile of your “junk” will show right through. Cool material but so thin they are inappropriate. If you are on a remote surf trip I am sure they are awesome, but it you are at the resort pool, you are going to make some people uncomfortable.
nice looking but not for surfing
This are very lightweight and comfortable. I like them but there is SO much stretch in the waistband that there is no way they will stay on in any sizable surf no matter how much I cinch them. I bought a couple other pairs of board shorts which had stretch, but not in the waistband like these ones.

Better, and not
The new 2019 material feels great next to your skin and it is stretchier than older versions. Prior versions had some leeway with the drawstrings and still felt snug.
Amazing fit and feel
I needed a new pair of board shorts. I tried a few different styles at Patagonia (baggies longs, baggies lights, the scallop hem stretch wavefarer, and these Stretch Planing board shorts). Amazingly comfortable, very revealing (mint green color)
I love these shorts and deal with the fact that they are about as revealing as a wet t-shirt, because they are so comfortable. I'm sorry if you got a view of something you really didn't want to see. Great cut and fabric. Fly needs some work
The only negative on these trunks is the fly. The fabric folds over itself and is just expected to stay in place, but it doesn’t. They also run a bit larger than other Patagonia board shorts I’ve had... maybe because of the stretch. I’d probably size these down 1” if I were to purchase again. The fit and feel in the water is otherwise great.

First, these board shorts are awesome: They fit great, are light but very durable and move perfectly with you. They also dry so fast you forget they were ever wet.
