Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best climbing book Beyond the Mountain is without a doubt, the best climbing book that I have read (and I've read most of them). Truly an inspiring read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Read! This book is simply amazing! It exposes Steve House in all areas of his life. Fascinating how goals and achievements are perceived before during and after ascents of some of the worlds highest peaks. The struggles and successes in his personal life, raw emotions, and triumph; this book has it all. This book will inspire you, and get you thinking about the bigger pictures in life. To top it off... this book is an enjoyable and easy read ( finished it in a few days of a flight from JFK to san juan, pr and several days on the beach). Thanks Steve and Patagonia!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Future mountaineering classic I've read Steve's articles in the climbing magazines and enjoyed them. Having a more expanded story in book form was even more enjoyable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read for Any Alpinist! A must read for any alpinist. For years now I have read about Steve House's great summits. He seemed to be inhuman. In his book/diary he shares his progression to greatness. What it takes mentally, physically and in relationships. He shares his passion, fears and full commitment to his style. Thanks for honestly sharing your life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stunned! With "Beyond The Mountain", Steve House brings us into a world of high hopes, overwhelming challenges, great love and also great loss. This book is not merely a collection of tales by one of our time's greatest alpinists, but an extraordinary glimpse into what drives us to succeed. His candid yet elegant prose shows a human side of his life and adventures that few of "the great ones" exhibit. This book literally stunned me with it's vast scope and humble interpretation of what it means and what it takes to truly know one's self.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling In Beyond the Mountain, Steve skillfully plots his career with a series of truly amazing stories. Mostly we are treated to gripping descriptions of climbing at the very edge of human ability, in which his relentless drive risks his life for reasons he struggles to describe. But there are also understated love stories here -- not of romance, but of the partners and others who have meant the most to him personally in his vertical pursuits. Steve seems to have put all of himself into this work, writing with a psychological honesty that is uncommon, reliving for us his victories and moments of clarity, but also his intense inner struggles with the desire to succeed and the fear of failure, the love of the sport and the crushing despair over fallen friends, the will to risk everything and the nagging question of why he does this given the intense personal costs and the likely ultimate outcome. It is because of his brutal honesty, with others but mostly with himself, that what Steve gives us here is truly a gift, a glimpse into another man's soul, so that ironically this biography of the uber-athlete is the story of Everyman. You will start to read it because it is the must-read of the year for everyone who has ever felt the thrill of going on belay, but you will blast through it and then dwell on it for days because Steve has not tried to oversimplify or falsely dramatize or glorify, but only to describe his complex lifelong quest to answer with his body the fundamental question of how one should find meaning and fulfillment.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Blown Away I'll admit, I skeptically picked up Steve's book as an admirer of his climbs and style. I had no clue what an excellent writer he is. He not only shares fine adventures in detail and honesty, but he articulates and thoughtfully explores the complex relationships of men and mountains. Time after time his words resonated, clarified, and drew forth questions about my own experiences. This is a great book. I hope it finds its way into the hands of many young climbers.
