Read More Close
After more than 15 years of cranking, R1® fabric is still the gold standard for alpine efficiency. Its high/low grid interior (Polartec® Power Grid™ polyester) is key to the hoody’s versatility, and the highly refined fabric—the lightest and most breathable iteration ever—remains exclusive to Patagonia. It stretches, traps heat and compresses to practically nothing, with the pared-down but versatile features that climbers and backcountry skiers need: a snug-fitting balaclava-style hood; a minimalist, deep-venting front zipper with a soft zipper garage that keeps your chin comfy; and a variable-conditions cuff with discreet on-seam thumb holes and a spiral-stitch construction so you can push up the sleeves with no ensuing forearm pump. With off-shoulder seams for pack-wearing comfort, a long torso for layering under a harness, an exterior chest pocket and Polygiene® permanent odor control.
  • Exclusive to Patagonia, this Polartec® Power Grid™ fabric with Polygiene® permanent odor control is light and breathable with outstanding stretch and durability

Regulator® fleece insulation provides phenomenal compressibility, light weight warmth, and moisture transport, whether used alone or as part of a layering system.

The lofted hollow-core fibers of Regulator fleece insulation conserve body heat while allowing body moisture to wick uninhibited. They’re also lightweight and highly compressible for packing.

Regulator Fleece Insulation provides exceptional breathability to keep you dry on the inside and while Regulator fleece provides the same amount of warmth as a much bulkier fleece, it does so with lighter, more compressible materials. Since you stay both dryer and warmer, you’re able to maintain your comfort over a wide temperature range, which results in fewer layering changes and a lighter, less bulky pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great gear. Make more colors! This is a great piece of gear. A must have for campers and hikers alike. Please make more colors for men! Bring back awesome combinations like the True Teal. It's frustrating to miss out on the great colors. Bring it back please!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bring back the old R1 Hands down the old R1 was way better. The original was actually a piece of gear, the new one is just a piece of clothing. I love Patagonia products, but you need to realize that if it ain’t broke don’t fit if.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from handy all year round have an 5+ yo one, looks still in shape. Bought a new one : thinner, but can't tell difference if it is cooler or warmer. Had to buy large slim fit, REG slim fit is too small. did they changed the fit over the years ? i use it in a 3 layers setup at 0F or chilly summer nights at camp site.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not the same durability as the older style I have two older R1s that I still use extensively. The newer design is slightly thinner, lighter, and unfortunately not as great. Under a pack, the new hoody has started to pill, I have only warn it twice and it looks quite a bit more worn that either of my older pieces. I am a little bummed...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from On point I can't believe I put off getting one of these for so long. A classic! The fit is perfect, the hood is awesome, and it's a great level of warmth for just-below-freezing temps. I've used it running, hiking, and skiing, and I'm confident it will be great for climbing next season. It's a little longer than a standard hoodie, just long enough to stay tucked under a harness and avoid bare skin, but not so long that it looks weird. Love the thumb loops too...they keep the hands warm but leave the fingers free, and fit nicely in my gloves. My only gripe is that the main zipper gets caught in my beard when I zip it up all the way. I'm pretty slim, with slightly broad shoulders, 6' and ~150 pounds. A medium fits perfectly.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost perfect! I'm a year round bike commuter and my primary use for the r1 hoodie is for layeing as the temp drops. My first couple rides, it worked well as a mid layer between an rei base and a yoko jacket. As the temp drops, i'll layer under a hardshell/nano puff. The r1 hoodie has worked as expected (warm, thin, nonrestricting) so far. I have several r1 pullovers (all the same size as my r1 hoodie) and love them. That said, the r1 hoodie has some needless features that the r1 pullover didn't have. First, the extra long tornso seems silly and it's a pain trying to stuff so much extra top into my pants. My r1 pullovers never come out of my pants. With the r1 hoodie, it's over kill for a problem that simply didn't exist. Second, the sleeves seem like they were designed for an ape. I'm a bit of a knuckle dragger, but these sleeves are too long even for me. Third, on very thin baselayers, thumb holes make sense to me--slide the baselayer nicely inside gloves/mits. With a mid layer (such as the r1 hoodie), it's impossible to use the thumb holes inside a properly fitted glove and wearing larger gloves over any mid layer just creates more dead air/cold spots. Why add these unnecessary features just to degrade the product? The rest of the r1 hoodie is awesome: single breast pocket to keep my phone from freezing up, balaclava style hood layers under all my helmets, and the hoodie gives an extra layer over my xc hat (beanie?), all without hampering my vision like a "normal hoodie" or over hood of a hardshell. why not just add a hood to the current r1 pullover? Perfection!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it! I think the R1 hoody is one of the best, most versatile products that Patagonia makes. The hoody is perfect to keep your neck warm, either as a neck buff or a full hood. The extra length and the thumb holes ensures everything stays were it should stay. I originally bought the R1 hoody back in 2009 and recently purchased another one because I lost my first one while traveling. The new one has a center zipper on the chin instead of the off-center zipper on the 2009 version which I liked so much (please bring it back) and the material seemed thicker and more durable (the garment also felt a littler heavier) and less stretchy. Because of the seeming less stretchiness, the hoody felt tight around the arm pits (I'm 6'0", 165-170 lbs, athletic build). I'm right between tight fitting M and a loose fitting L. Difficult place to be in, but hopefully Patagonia will improve this garment to fit the folks in between.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Diggity Probably my favorite piece of outdoor clothing. Great with layers under or as a stand alone. Surprisingly warm, but of course can be vented. I teach in the outdoors and there is seldom a training or trip where I don't have this with me.
