The warmest Merino baselayer made with wool from the grasslands of Patagonia and blended with Capilene® fiber.

Traveling in cold weather and backpacking in high terrain share a common need—to minimize clothing changes. Thermal Weight is our warmest Merino baselayer. It's wonderfully soft, has a great warmth-to-weight ratio, breathes and resists odor, stretches and regulates body temperature across a wide range of conditions. Our fine merino wool is from the grasslands of Patagonia. We slow-wash it for softness and shrink resistance without the use of chlorine, then blend it with Capilene® recycled polyester for increased durability, dry times and moisture management. Features include a long center-front zipper for venting, self-fabric backing on the collar with internal neck tape for chafe-free comfort, full underarm gussets for unhindered shoulder mobility, elastic thumb loops for secure hand coverage, low-bulk merrow seams to minimize chafing, offset shoulder and side seams to lie smoothly beneath pack straps, and a drop tail for additional coverage. Machine wash cold; machine dry at low temperatures.
  • Fine merino wool from the grasslands of Patagonia blended with Capilene® recycled polyester for improved wicking, durability and dry time
  • 18.9 micron-gauge yarn; jersey-knit construction; slow-washed without chlorine to prevent shrinkage
  • Self-fabric backing on collar with internal neck tape for comfort; locker loop for hang-drying
  • Long center-front zipper vents body heat and is backed by kissing welts for low-bulk comfort next to skin
  • Offset shoulder seams eliminate chafing under pack straps; full underarm gusset for range of motion and chafe-free comfort
  • Elastic thumb loops for secure hand coverage
  • Low-bulk merrow seams to minimize chafing; drop tail for more coverage

bluesign® Approved Fabric

Patagonia has worked with bluesign technologies since 2000 to evaluate and reduce resource consumption in our materials supply chain, and to assist us with managing the chemicals, dyes and finishes used in the process. bluesign technologies, based in Switzerland, works at each step in the textile supply chain to approve chemicals, processes, materials, and products that are safe for the environment, safe for workers, and safe for the end customers.

In 2007, Patagonia became the first brand to officially join the network of bluesign® system partners.

Any fabric you see that’s bluesign® approved offers the highest level of consumer safety by employing methods and materials in their manufacture that conserve resources and minimize impacts on people and the environment.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Women's Merino Tw Zip Neck is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great layer I love this layer, it's very cosy and warm. I bought it as mid-layer for hiking in the Andes, sleeping camping etc. It's classic so can be used as everyday wear. I haven't put it to test yet, but it seems perfect for my requirements. Fits my usual size with Patagonia. I tried one size down too and the sleeves were too short and overall a bit too tight so it fits true to its size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wear it 6 days a week as a shirt! Love the pretty striped zip-up; I've worn it 6 days a week as a shirt! Wish I had two so I could wear the other one when this one is in the wash! Perfect fabric weight & breathe-ability. One caution - I'd bought a large, and since we dry all of our clothes in the dryer, it shrunk a bit so I had to hand it down to our daughter & I went back & got an XL which is a nice fit as a shirt and could still work if it shrinks a little

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another great piece! I bought three different items for my wife. I wear Patagonia items and so does our son. In 36 years of marriage I've learned to not pick out clothes for my wife. And then came Patagonia!! She loves this top and the others as well. It's lightweight, warm and can be worn over the LS Capilene Team Crew. I have ordered two more times for her since she received the first order with three different items.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just what I wanted. I've had this top for about a month. It's the second one I've had, though I bought the other elsewhere. I love the weight of this one and the fit. I can wear it alone or under other tops in the year-round damp, chilly Northern California weather.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too scratchy I had to return this top because it was too scratchy next to my skin. The lightweight and midweight merino baselayers have a wonderful, soft feel but this one is very uncomfortable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Base Layer! I bought this top along with the pants for a recent trip to Iceland. It was awesome! Kept me warm (but not too warm). And did not smell even though I only had two pairs of base layers for the 11 day trip. I would highly recommend this for any activity in cold conditions.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So warm and soft! I love this top! It is very warm, and after it's washed, it becomes so very soft. The neck is the perfect height, and I am never bothered by the zipper. It fits true to size. I usually order up a size in tops, but in this case I am very happy with the size I chose using the size chart. I wish the sleeves were a half inch longer, but once I have a jacket on, they stay in place nicely. I found this to be a great purchase!
