It's a Great Bag
The inside of the Atom back is positively cavernous. I've stuffed an amazing amount of stuff in it, and it seems ready to take on more. It's rugged, and has already taken more than one difficult tumble, but held up without issue. I have only two challenges with this bag: The first is that I have a Samsung fold-phone, and it will not fit ... Read Morein the shoulder pouch, which, I assume, is designed to accommodate a cell phone. The second challenge is that I am right-handed, and prefer that the bag sits behind me, on my right side. But the design is such that is sits flat on the left, putting the pouch that should be holding my cell phone but now holds my wallet, on my right shoulder. These are trivial things, and don't detract from the value or usefulness of this terrific bag.
Best Sling Bag So Far
This sling bag is durable and versatile. Not too big, not too small. It has plenty of room to stash extra layers, a water bottle, keys, phone, a good book, sunglasses, wallet and snacks. Woah that's a lot for a small bag but it's TRUE! Plus it's super easy to get into without having to take it off. And it's even comfortable!
Way more space inside than expected!
I bought this sling so I could carry my AirPod Max as well as a container of fruit during my commute to and from work and was a little doubtful as it looks so tiny, I wasn't sure it would fit everything comfortably. We have purchased several Atom Slings over the years and in general love this bag. Awesome day bag, but easy to get pick pocketed.
I love the atom 8L as a day bag to carry water, notebook and other knick knacks used for my planned day. I have it owned it for about 3 years and carry it every where. Super cool bag
Great versatility with this bag. Materials are durable, color ways are awesome and it fits everything I need to carry around without being a regular backpack. This relates to the '23 edition of the Atom 8L Sling. There are two compartments on the main body of the bag. Perfect small bag
This size is perfect for someone who never carries a purse. Sometimes I need a bag that will hold cell and checkbook along with reading material. All my other bags/purses are just simply too big and bulky. It's also large enough to accommodate my water bottle when hiking. Fits well and I would recommend this to anyone.

This review is for the previous version of this sling bag. We depend on it daily for our teen son. He is a Type 1 Diabetic and needs supplies on hand at all times. Could use a refresh to the design
Dear Patagonia Product Development Team, Here are my scribbles about the Atom Bag. I have had every single version of this bag (V2 and V4 were the best) with the current V5 being the least usable. Then add a top compression strap to keep a water bottle, dog leash, seat cushion, or foam pad from falling out. 2. Add color contrast inside to find stuff fast. Gray is blah. 3. Current outer second pocket - add extra flap of micro fiber to clean cell phone face, sunglasses, etc. Adding a microfiber liner like pervious versions inside the small pocket would be a nice touch. 4. Replace the wide bag messenger style strap with the cell phone pocket and just add back the smaller strap like V1-4. 5. Since you dropped the waist belt in V5, add a third leg chest strap to keep from sliding around when riding a bike. 6. Expandable idea - make it with some side zippers to expand the volume. 7. Add one half or one inch to the length of this bag. I carry two one-liter water bottles in my Version 3 bags and this is great for going light and free in the back country with my dog. The current Version 4 is too short. 9. Dump the huge haul handle at the top and add more zipper (see V1-4) so I can open this bag up and get to my stuff. Put the haul loop back on the base of the strap like V4. Thanks for listening! Scoot

Don't like the new version.
The older version was a great pack. This new version has a smaller large compartment which kind of ruined the pack. Also, the zippered opening is smaller. The smaller outside compartment is bigger which is great, but doesn't make up for the other changes made. Please go back to a longer zippered opening.
Thanks for the feedback, C. We double checked on any changes made to this pack, and it looks like the last redesign was in Spring of 2022. While we did change some design features, the pack is still considered an 8L so the amount of room should remain the same. Here are the changes we made: the strap pocket was made larger to accommodate larger phones, we added an internal divider to the main compartment, we added a large grab handle, the front straps tuck away, there is a larger opening to the front pocket, we eliminated the internal tablet sleeve, and we removed the tricot lining from the internal pocket. Perhaps the new divider makes the main compartment feel smaller, or you could be thinking of a different bag. Here are our other [sling options](https://www.patagonia.com/shop/luggage-hip-packs-slings). You can also check in on our Worn Wear website for a past season version of this bag; if you're not seeing one check back because we add to inventory everyday.
Great bag in theory, poor design
I wanted to like this bag so much. It's the perfect size for daily carry and travel, and I actually find the lack of organization a plus (I use bag organizers to hold smaller items so I'm able to easily transfer them between the different bags I use.) My main gripe - and It's a big one - is the strap. As a few other reviewers have no... Read Moreted, it chafes uncomfortably against bare skin if you happen to be wearing it with, say, a t-shirt. The bag also starts drooping whenever it has anything slightly heavy in it - which necessitates constant adjustments, and more chafing. And the pocket on the strap is next to useless. The stretchy fabric is useful for stashing a phone or wallet - but the only way I can use it that way is to wear the bag uncomfortably close and high on my torso so the pocket lies flat against my chest. Most of the time, the pocket sits where my neck and shoulder meet - which makes it useless for anything solid (though a bandanna fits in it nicely - I've taken to wrapping one around the strap where it touches my neck to help minimize the chafing.) A strap that detaches completely from the bag would allow me to swap it out for a more comfortable one; at the very least, there should be buckles for adjustment on both ends of the strap) for those of us with larger frames. And as other users have also said, it would be much better to have a bag that can be worn over both shoulders both to mitigate strain on one side when the bag is packed full and for personal preference. I find it hard to believe that Patagonia did any real-life testing on this with actual users. Hopefully the next iteration will be better.

Wanted to compare this bag with a certain grey green kidney shaped bag available on a certain River retailer. Currently the coarse fabric breathes well, but creates chafing if you're not diligent about readjusting it. The bag tends to work it's way down if you say, put stuff in it. The clasp on the shoulder strap is a nice feature in theory, but in practice it's a point of failure that's hardly used. I'd like to see a small waterproofed interior zipper pocket for passports, vaccination cards, or similar critical items. Stitched external straps for lashing items on would be nice. Overall the style and carrying capacity of the Atom are superior but not unimprovable. 3.5 stars.
Great redesign, but..
I am on my third Atom 8L, and I 100% recommend it. I have used at least three different designs. Overall, the new design will carry things slightly better, but I prefer the older design for myself. Thanks for being a great company. :D
Cute but ruined my shirts
This is a very cute bag and I wanted to love it, but unfortunately it ruined many of my shirts. I used the bag during a Disney world trip and noticed that many of my shirts had pilling due to the bag rubbing on the shirt. So it essentially ruined the back of the shirts I wore it with.

I got this bag for a trip to Europe and it was a dream. I usually use the 20L tote but it's cumbersome to take it all the way off and dig around in the inner pocket for my wallet every time I want to buy something, and also it's all too easy to just unthinkingly slip my phone into one of the side mesh pockets, which is great when hiking, ... Read Morenot so great when stepping onto a crowded train where a pickpocket might take advantage. The atom sling solved all my problems--the way it's designed, it hangs on your back like a backpack, but you can instantly swing it to the front to retrieve your wallet or stash a purchase, without it leaving your body. And when you sit down, if it's a less secure area, like a busy food hall or train, you can drop the strap and the bag easily sits next to you or on your lap while still being completely attached to your body. The front pocket was great for holding my wallet, there's a clip in there too, so I clipped the wallet to it so it could never accidentally drop or fall out. The main section is divided into two roomy compartments and I could fit so much in there, everything I needed for a day out and about, including a water bottle. It doesn't have the volume of the tote of course, but I stuck a little folded up lightweight shopping bag in there and if I grocery shopped or bought something bulky during the day, I pulled that out and stashed everything in there. The padded shoulder zip pocket was cool, I think it's for a phone but it was too inconvenient to pull the phone in and out of there all the time, so I used it for my train pass, and that worked great. I'm excited to use it on short hikes too!

My sister and I like ours so much that my daughter got one for Christmas. :-) I was actually on the website to send an email to Patagonia to let them know that mine appears to have some permanent damage on the back. The perfect bag for a light half-day hike or an urban day-trip. The pouch can hold a phone or a small tablet, a wallet, some knickknacks, as well as any skinny water bottle under, say, 20 oz. The sling is a bit tricky to put on, so practice at first. I love the exterior buckles, which I often use to carry a sweater or a rain jacket.
I have two Patagonia atom 8L bags in the previous iteration and I really love them, but with the change of seasons the rougher mesh backing is a bit too abrasive on nylon jackets. I was seeking a similar bag as a replacement. I use them as an EDC as opposed to a purse. I noticed Patagonia recently introduced a new version with some interesting new ... Read Morecolors and features. I decided to give one a try. I love the color, but I personally feel the bag is much bulkier than my previous one. Being a larger chested woman, the pocket on the strap is so uncomfortable even without the phone inside. I know others love being able to carry their phone in the chest strap pocket, but its entirely too bulky and obtrusive. Ive never carried my phone in the strap pocket anyway. The front pocket of the bag offers more space than the previous model, however the very short key clip is located here, so I attached my large key fobs here along with my small wallet. I do not want my keys scratching other items. Patagonia please make your key clip attachments longer so you dont have to remove your keys from the bag when using them. A small improvement when trying to unload groceries or herd children into the house. The main compartment has been divided. In theory its a great idea, but for practical purposes I felt that I was not able to carry nearly as much in this compartment due to the bulky divider. I only carry a spare pair of prescription eyeglasses, tissues, hand lotion, a small hairbrush, a pack of gum, and my iPhone SE which did not fit well in the main compartment even if I split these items within this divided pocket. I am aware other people like to carry their iPads/ tablets with them daily, but I feel this bag was originally designed as a small daily carry due to its size. I do not want to carry my iPad with me when out and about running errands or on a hike. I only used the bag for a few days thinking I would adjust to it, but I could not wear it comfortably. Frustrated, I checked out the Patagonia ultra light black hole sling 8L. So far I am enjoying the weight, the three zippered compartments, and the strap is not as bulky as the atom. Much easier to adjust the strap. I keep a small hand sanitizer in the open stretchy strap pocket. If it falls out when I slide the bag around, its not a big deal. Wish Patagonia offered more colors in the ultra light black hole sling. I prefer the ultra light black hole sling 8L over the newer version of the atom.
Perfect for a day hike!
Perfect size for a hike! I can fit my Nalgene, sunglasses, and whatever else I need for a day hike in mine. Its very comfortable and I use mine all the time. Not great for biking or running (which I don't think its intended for, to be fair), the bag tends to migrate to the front. I love it!
Perfect bag for walking, running errands
Patagonia lived up to its guarantee and replaced my beloved atom sling bag after the zipper broke. The new bag is even better: the small pocket has been expanded, making it a great place to stash keys (with a handy clip), masks, lip balm, etc. The strap has a flat zippered pocket for easily accessible IDs or mass transit pass. The bag fits comforta... Read Morebly over the shoulder and fits a water bottle, layer, with a protective separator for your electronics. Highly recommended!
Great product overall, but bulky
I love this bag. It has a great number of zippers and pockets. It can hold a wallet, water bottle, keys, and phone no problem. My only complaint is the fabric feels kind of bulky and clunky. It is not soft and moveable. However I will be keeping it due to Patagonias known durability and ethical practices.
3 Slings Later...
Purchased newest 2022 version and have but one regret: front strap for phone is so wide that I'm tired of a huge swathe of material sliding all over. Issue? Big bust. However, I love the Sling! One more issue: I do agree with several customers that the Sling needs a waist belt. Mine has flipped over my head just tying my shoes. Hahaha! Life!
Sling bag 8L
Perfect size. A couple enhancements that would make it ideal for my needs. 1) a zippered pocket at the back (outside) of the bag. It would keep secure wallets and such when walking in a crowded place. 2) a hook inside the main compartment as well. Again, I can hang a small pouch with essentials. Will keep things from falling out of the bag, if the ... Read Morebottom is cut/sliced. Please note that both suggestions above are made to make the bag more usable and secure in crowded places.
Utterly faulty design
I bought the original Atom back in the day. It was ok, though small. This second iteration is much worse. Filled with excessive unnecessary amounts of padding that make a small capacity outright useless. And where are the pockets???? An iPad won't fit. An Amazon fire just barely. Put in just a book and sunglasses and you're out of space. ... Read MoreIs this a joke? Lose the padding and increase size to 10-12 L and you could have the best day pack in the world... The strap is trash. Everything else is good.
Hi Christopher! Thank you for taking the time to write us a review. We're really sorry to hear about the disappointment with the strap on the bag. Your satisfaction is always guaranteed so you're welcome to [return](https://www.patagonia.com/returns.html).
Got this for a daypack for Disney, airports, etc. Hope was that it would fit several water bottles, a small sunscreen, phone, and a few other things. But it absolutely does not. Nice Bag but not for bigger breasted women
I loved the bag but being a bigger breasted woman the bag did not look right or fit right for me and I had to return it.
We're sorry to hear this bag didn't work for you! Thank you for this feedback, Denise; we will share it with our product designers. Please let us know if we can be of any help with that return.
New redesign leaves me reminiscing on the old bag
TLDR: The Atom 8L is a great daily bag for essentials. There are some definite highlights to the redesign for Summer 2022, but also some drawbacks. Read on for more context. Let me start with the positives. - Size and function: perfect for daily items like chapstick, headphones, journal, wallet, keys, etc etc etc. The sling makes it easy to swing... Read More it around for access then toss it back. - The two external mini straps are great for attaching an extra layer (jacket etc) - The shoulder strap attachment point at the bottom of the bag has been upgraded and reinforced. This is a major PRO to the new design, as that was the point of failure on my old Atom. - The fabric has also gone through an upgrade and seems more durable overall - An added grab loop at the top makes it easier to carry by hand and to hang up on a hook - The diameter of the shoulder strap has been enlarged for more comfort. Negatives to the Summer 2022 version: - Older editions of this bag had a hip belt. The removal of this is SUPER sad. :( It helped keep the bag in place while riding a bike - without it, the bag falls forward. Crucially - it also could distribute weight to your hips if you've filled the bag up, and when not in use, it had a little stow away spot. Now all the weight can only be carried on the shoulder. - I totally get why the small pocket on the shoulder strap has been enlarged - probably for phones. But the lightweight mesh on that part feels a bit fragile. I liked it better with a small pocket for just chapstick or other teeny items. - A mesh pocket for a wallet used to be on the high side wall of the large interior - this was GREAT! It kept the wallet high and easily accessible. This has been removed. Now, the interior is a black hole and everything just sits at the bottom. - The divider in the bag has been beefed up with a layer of foam in the divider. I would imagine this "helps" the bag stay in two "halves," but in practical use, I found that it made it more difficult to access the half farther away from your back and easier to access the side closer to the back. I think this foam piece also makes the bag unnecessarily heavier. - The last thing that is a definite buzz-kill on this version is that the main compartment zipper used to be really easy to operate one handed. For whatever reason, the way the new zipper is situated on the spine (along the foam structural piece) of the bag causes the zipper track to bend and get snagged when trying to open/close with one hand. If you're a first time Atom Sling buyer, you'll probably be stoked on this bag because most shoulder sling bags out there (notably Kavu) don't have a waist belt, and if you're comparing sling bags, this is STILL a great choice. But . If you had an old one and loved the features I mentioned here, you might be disappointed. Because I was so used to and enamored with my old Atom, I actually chose to return this iteration of Atom to Patagonia and find an old model on eBay. At the end of the day, I still love Patagonia, and this bag is still a good one. My hope is that future versions bring back the creature comforts and versatility that made the old Atom ridiculously awesome vs just great. One thing that could be added that the old version didnt have is a pen holder! I actually had a friend with an industrial sewing machine add that feature into my old bag haha. NOTE: Remember this is for the Summer/Fall 2022 version. If you're reading this and its a new release, some of what I've written may not be applicable anymore.
A little small for a commuter bag
I thought the Atom 8L would be a perfect commuter bag but due to the shape it does not fit a 13" surface or probably any other similar sized, small, laptop. The length of the computer is less than the length of the bag but overall it's quite a bit too big. It does fit an iPad. The bag has the quality one would expect from Patagonia and i... Read Mores super comfortable. I've had other slings that fit weird, this one has a perfect shape for me. I'm a guy, 5'9, and about 175# with a fairly muscular build. Even though the bag will not work for it's original purpose, I am keeping it to use on day hikes or similar because it is super nice.
I thought this product would
I thought this product would fit my laptop as a replacement of the current bag I use for it. Unfortunately, it does not come close to doing so. I had checked the measurements, but the opening is too small. I will return the product. Not anyone's fault, just what it is.
very well made but cumbersome and heavy for not much storage
Really wanted to love this, so well made and very attractive, but kind of a heavy pack even empty - and not much stuff fits inside.

Perfect for travel
I recently went on a 14 day trip around Scandinavia, the Atom Sling Bag was the perfect pack to have. I have two issues with this sling bag. First and worst for me is my iPad wont fit in the bag with a case on. If I take the case off there is barely enough room for it. Awesome bag just a little to small for my needs
Overall the bag was awesome, it was just a little small for my need and that's more on me than on the bag. I bought this as a edc bag for work and other activities, the only problem was it didn't fit everything I wanted to put in it. What did fit was a rain Poncho, 32 oz Nalgene, a small bottle of hand sanitizer, phone, 10,000 miliamp bat... Read Moretery bank and some pocket trash. If that's all you carry on the daily then this bag will be awesome. If you carry more than that then you should probably get a bigger bag. P.S. if you are someone who is looking for a pistol sling this thing would be awesome as long as you are ok with ironing some velcro to the inside. The large pocket has two partitions so you could use the smaller one for your pistol and the larger one mags.
