Just buy it already

Seriously, stop questioning and buy it! This is the second MLC Mini bag I have owned, I upgraded from the original version (which was awesome too). I use this bag for absolutely everything and have not been disappointed. The upgrades from the old bag (moved organization space, added cupholder and hip belt, material isn't glossy anymore, and mo... Read Morere) are incredible and this bag is absolutely worth the cost. This bag goes with me to work, it's my suitcase when traveling, I use it for day hikes, and even for groceries sometimes. I cannot recommend this bag enough.

Great bag to use as personal item on flights

I have a large (40L) travel backpack and wanted to find a smaller one to use as my "personal item" bag that had to meet several criteria. First, I wanted a backpack that wasn't overstuffed with padded compartments, because at 30L I need to maximize the useable interior space. Similarly, I didn't want the pack to be too "ri... Read Moregid" in case I'd need to stuff it into a space that was technically smaller than its stated dimensions (like under a plane seat). I also wanted a few big exterior pockets for quick access to the "small" stuff (passport, earbuds, phone, etc). Finally, I didn't need an excessive harness system, as 30L will only get so heavy. This backpack covered all those needs, and does so in a simple, attractive, and lightweight design. It maximizes its useable dimensions, with only the back & laptop sleeve being lightly padded. Its structure is soft/flexible enough that it could be squashed into a smaller area if not packed to bursting. The top exterior pocket is great for emptying my pockets when going through security. And the harness system is simple and comfortable without being overengineered. The material feels really solid both inside and out, and I really appreciate the single large bucket for ease of packing. If I were to nitpick, I'd only change a few things with the Mini MLC. First, the vertical clamshell opening is a bit annoying, and doesn't seem to serve any benefit versus horizontal. Second, the full-length zip on the laptop/media compartment is unnecessary; security is just going to make you take the laptop out anyway. Finally, I'd love if they used more weatherproof zippers throughout the exterior. All that said, I just really love this pack overall, and would easily recommend it to anyone looking for a smaller travel backpack that prefers something more streamlined than overdesigned.

Great versatile bag

Perfect for air travel, or any kind of backpacking adventure. Comfortable shoulostraps for long hikes and quality zippers that should last. Only had the bag for a few weeks but so far so good!

Perfect Carry On!

I wanted a backpack compact enough to take traveling and something where I could overpack (as one does) and not worry about sitting on my bag to close it. It fits so much!! And bonus - you can fit it under the seat in front of you as a personal item (its a little long, but you can definitely make it work).

Bulletproof for traveling

I purchased the 30 liter Black Hole Mini MLC specifically for overseas travel. I just returned from 30 days traveling in Laos and Thailand. This included a 10 day shallow draft boat trip down the upper Laotian Mekong where I got on and off the boat several times a day and where being gentle on luggage was an impossibility. This bag was water resist... Read Moreant enough to keep out light rain and is built like steel. I slung it over a shoulder and used the backpack straps. If this bag ever wears out, I would replace it with the same.

Perfect travel personal item

So excited to get this for plane travel. Unlike some, it has all the needed pocket sizes. If I were to change anything, I would put the shoulder strap on the other side so the zippers are in front of you since a majority of people are right hand dominant and will carry on the right shoulder. It'll be less pickpocket secure that way.

Beautiful and versatile

I love this bag for its size and efficiency. The front pockets hold clothing and other necessities; the back pocket is perfect for my laptop and other valuables. I especially love that I can use it as a pack or sling it over my shoulder. Of course, I can count on everything being high quality, zippers, fabric, etc.

Very good pack... some changes would be good

There is a lot of love about this pack - it fits a 5'3" woman which is surprising. It has a waist belt which many of these travel packs do not. The material is durable and the pack is reasonably light. What I would change: The pack flips open vertically, rather than open like a book. I can not see any reason for this and I really don&#x2... Read More7;t like it - it's counterintuitive and strange. The same goes for the laptop part of the pack. you have to peel it back all the way to get to all the functionality. And, for someone who likes things ultra-light, it feels over-constructed with two highly padded pockets. Overall though, well designed.

Business and Leisure / Urban and Rural

This bag has served me extremely well over a variety of situations: business travel, leisure travel, urban environments and rural environments. Having said that, here are a few very, very picky thing that I want to point out. First, one needs to keep in mind that a pair of men's shoes (size 10-11) is going to take up a substantial amount of sp... Read Moreace. If an extra pair of (men's) shoes is needed for your travel needs, then please consider a larger bag. Second, there is compression panel in the main compartment. To me, this panel is not helpful and the main access flap is adequate for compressing. Zipping & unzipping the compression panel seems unnecessary and is an inconvenience. Finally, I had two situations where I had to walk 1.5 and 2.5 miles with the bag on my back. It worked out extremely well. It was almost like a technical pack with no back, shoulder, or neck problems. Having said that, I'm wondering if there is a way to have the waist belt (which very smartly converts into a shoulder strap) have a more robust attachment to the bag. Over time, I found that the bag started to sag on the waist belt, like a pair of loose pants. Also, I found that the sternum strap attachment points were too high for me. I'm not that tall and the lowest attachment points were almost near my neck. Once again, this is an excellent bag and I highly recommend it for a variety of travel situations. Thanks.

Almost Perfect.

I carry a pack all the time. I travel. I walk and bike often for transportation. I have tried many packs over the years. This is a brilliant pack. Great access, great organization, great carry options. I just don't get how a pack of this level missed the rain fly option.

Close to perfect

This is an amazingly versatile bag that works really well for my travel laptop bag. As a backpack, it's perfect. My hardest working bag ever!

This is the best (large) backpack. It does grocery hauling duties through the week, is my weekender (and bike race) travel pack, and works as the perfect personal item companion to a carry-on roller (as long as it isn't stuffed full it fits great under the seat sideways as its height matches the width of the planes seats). Hi Jane, thank you for providing this review. The MLC comes in two sizes: the larger 45L and this smaller 30L. We're sorry the 30L was too big and too tech-focused for you. If you're looking for a travel pack to hold clothes, with less emphasis on laptops, etc., you might prefer the Fieldsmith Packs, or even the Ultralight Black Hole Tote Pack. Design Improvement

Hi, This has been one of my favorite bags and perfect when coupled with the rolling duffel for travel. I like this bag, but the computer "sleeve" should be towards the back of the pack, not the front. If I have it loaded towards the front of the pack and it falls, its likely to be damaged. It also makes it unbalanced when slid over the handle of the Black Hole Luggage.

The shoulder straps are comfortable, the hip belt works well as long as your bear in mind this is supposed to be a lightweight pack so it just holds the pack on you and is not intended to transfer weight from your shoulders. But it also converts in a very easy and slick way to a shoulder strap. I packed everything I mentioned above and more in it and ended up under 15 pounds total. Totally liberating to travel with this pack!

New size too big for "personal item"

The previous version was able to fit the "personal item" requirements for international air travel. Adding 4 inches to the length of this, means it's too big. VERY disappointed. Otherwise would be perfect for travel. Why not shave off those 4inches on the design. Then it would be the perfect travel back.

Just about perfect

This bag is excellent. I have another 30L bag from another company that has a very poor layout, so I was wary of getting a similarly sized bag. This bag, however is extremely well thought out and capable of carrying everything I need and then some. The flat open option is also extremely helpful.

Great carry on bag

Bought this for my carry on bag. If using this in combination with a roller carry on, its a little overkill, a smaller backpack may suit better. This could hold everything you need for a 3 day trip but not much more in my opinion, and I use packing cubes so Im pretty efficient.

Excellent Travel Backpack

This is the best carry-on travel bag I have ever owned. I bought it last Fall to replace and upgrade my 13-year old Patagonia MLC of similar size and design. The top zipper pouch works well for sunglasses, snacks or small items that need quick access. For me, this the perfect size and configuration for shorter trips. The zippers work smothly and feel sturdy. Patagonia products are built to last. My old MLC has a lot of miles on it but still works just fine, by the way. Although, it won't see much action because this new one is a big improvement. Very happy with this purchase!

The straps are comfortable, and the backpack mode doesn't feel like an afterthought. I like that the bag keeps it shape when NOT full. I also appreciate the very deep water-bottle sleeve on the outside. Admittedly, I don't use this for a bottle, but to quickly drop items in. The depth makes me feel very comfortable that they won't fall out. Negatives: 99% of the time I don't use the mesh cover over the main compartment. I keep it unzipped and scrunched into the bottom of the bag. I was told the pouch underneath was to store it out of the way, but the pouch isn't centered, and I cannot figure out how that might work. I have been looking for 4 years for the perfect airline under seat travel bag (I have gone through too many brands to list). Read Moreens up like a suitcase... top loading just does not work well for an overnight/travel bag. - Handles for suitcase style carrying. Handles cannot get in the way of opening the main compartments of the bag. Handles for both Horizontal and Vertical carry. - Shoulder strap for carrying like a messenger bag. - Be able to carry like a backpack, and able to stow away the backpack straps when not in use. - Small outer pocket for easy access to things like a phone or passport. - Luggage passthrough so it can be used with my carry-on luggage. - Easy laptop access for going through TSA. - Minimalist design... not lots of external compression straps, daisy straps, etc. - Waist strap that can be removed. I will be using this for light travel, not backpacking, and I find a waist strap useless for my purposes. - Some padding for when the bag is used in backpack mode, but not so intrusive that it looks silly when the bag is used like a messenger bag. - Bag must weigh under 4 pounds. - Side pocket for a water bottle. - Bag must be small enough that even my wife at 5'6" can manage it. - Internal storage compartments for the times that I want to use the bag for business travel. - A good amount of water resistance. - I want a bag that has a more rectangular structure to it, so that it does not look silly when carried over the shoulder messenger bag style. MY IMPRESSION: I have to say this bag does the best job so far at checking all my requirements. Although I personally don't see much use for a waist belt, I do like how this bag lets you use the shoulder strap as a waist belt and vice versa... pretty ingenious. I like how you can fully unzip one side of the bag suitcase style, exposing laptop storage, document storage, and other storage pockets. You can unzip that side of the bag just far enough to allow you to remove your laptop/tablet without having to open the entire bag. Unzipping the other side of the bag suitcase style exposes the main compartment that would typically be used for clothes, shoes, etc. That side also includes some basic storage compartments. The handle on the backside of the backpack also doubles as a luggage passthrough. Everything is well constructed, minimalist, and looks really good. NEGATIVES: I only have 4 minor complaints. The carry handles are pretty basic and lack any extra padding (almost non-existent when compared to other bags in this class). At least I do not have to fiddle with connecting two handles together with a clasp like with some other bags. The laptop sleeve does have padding in the bottom, but I wish it were a little more padded to protect my laptop from damage in case the bag is dropped on its bottom. There are no internal compression straps in the main compartment. My Tortuga Setout Divide has them and it is nice. Not a deal breaker for me, especially because it does add to the weight of a bag, and is might be overkill for small bags like this anyway. The water bottle pocket is very small and when the bag is fully packed it will only accommodate small bottles. An expandable water bottle pocket here would have made all the difference. FINAL THOUGHTS: The only other bag that also comes close to fulfilling all my requirements is the Are Flight Pack 3. It has YKK zippers which I do love. I believe Patagonia uses propriety zippers of their own making (although I could be wrong about that) and time will tell how good they are. The Aer is a 3/4 vertical open, not a full suitcase style like the Patagonia, and the Aer handles can get in the way when opening the bag (although its handles do offer more padding). Overall the Are and this Patagonia are really a close match, but I chose the Patagonia because of name reputation, suitcase style opening, and because I think it is a better looking bag. But it was a REALLY close matchup. I really do wish Patagonia had added an expandable water bottle pocket and better handle padding.. that would have moved the bag into a class almost it's own. Internal compression straps would have been nice although for a bag this size that might be overkill anyway.
