the material is very nice and the fit is ok if a little baggier than necessary given the stretchy material. But the lack of belt loops was the factor in my decision to return these pants. the embedded cinch cord doesn't hold the pants up unless the pockets are empty, and I was constantly having to adjust the waist cinch. With belt loops I woul... Read Mored have a couple pair of these.
I like the fit and fabric of these pants. I was even considering purchasing a second pair in a different color. However... within the first month the interior drawstring just disappeared into its hole. Nothing to secure the waist. The interior pull string is an interesting idea. In practice, it doesn't hold up. Its failure rendered these pants... Read More useless after about 4 weeks. Bad design. Message to Patagonia: improve the design or go back to a belt like the Gii trousers I love.

They look great on
So far I love these pants they fit great and are very comfortable
They nail it.
Fit, fabric design are all exceptional. I prefer belt loops and have had pants from Patagonia where the pull string at the waist does not hold fast, so to have a pair of pants that fit great and the pull string holds face is great. I have an active 18 year old who hates long pants but he likes these. Great range of motion and weight... Read More. Love em!
Having worn and loved previous generations of the RPS, I was unsure what to expect with this latest iteration. Similar fabric, which is great (airy, durable, dries fast). Fit is true to size, with a similar loose straight-from-the-hips cut (excellent mobility), but some small patterning changes around the waist mean a much better fit for me. The ne... Read Morew waist adjustment is low profile and stays put. Only complaint is that one of the cuff-tightening shock cords tore out on the first day. Easy fix, including cutting away the rubber cord locks, rethreading the shock cord in the hem, and securing it with a knot, but a little disappointing all the same.
I own three pairs of these and use them for everyday wear as well as climbing. I really wanted to love these pants but at best I kinda like them at this point. In particular due to issues with the adjustable waistband (see below).
Cons:
- The biggest con for me is that the adjustable waistband mechanism is quite flawed. First, it never holds tensi... Read Moreon on my for more than 10-20 min, particularly with movement. Second, the pull cord can easily slip into the pants because it passes underneath a strip of fabric. I've had this happen on two pairs where I believe the nylon flips over in the buckle, this removes the barrier the back sewn part on the end provides, and then when it inevitably loosens it slips into the pants making it a pain to get back out / fix.
- It would be nice if Patagonia made a Long version of this but I get not many customers are 6'7" like myself.
Things I like:
- Very stretchy and easy to move in.
- Despite being made of a thinner material they hold up well on rock. Even climbing in Joshua Tree didn't shred them.
- Large butt pockets are awesome. You can literally drop a book in one and carry it around.
My son outgrew these and I, a woman, tried them on. To my astonishment they fitted nearly perfectly once I'd cinched in the waist, generous but not baggy. They're comfortable under a harness, lightweight and unlike my Chambeaus have a gusset for ease of movement. The tiny little waist adjuster is genius for this non-belt wearer. I'd ... Read Moregive them 5 stars if they came in bright colours - Patagonia, why is everything you send to AU for both men and women sludge coloured.
I have owned many iterations of these pants, including the original design. The first pair I bought were a size 31 and they were (and still are) a great fit. Unfortunately they have changed the cut multiple times with these and I have had to purchase all the sizes up to a size 34 to get the right fit in the crotch/thighs/butt. Previous iterations w... Now it seems I am back to a 31 in this model as the size 32 I recently purchased are too big in the waist and WAY too baggy in the lower legs. I may have changed size a little over the last 5 years but it seems unlikely that I changed that much, esp since I've remained the same size in all of my other pants. Very disappointing. Like so many other items, I wish they would stop messing with a good thing. Everything else about these pants (weight, design, intended use) are great, I just would like some consistency with sizing.
I've had various iterations of these pants for about 5 years now. My first pair lasted about 4 years, and was hands down my favorite pair of pants. They were lightweight, breathable, and very durable. The stitching on the rear of the pants had fallen apart, so I sent them in to be resewn. To my surprise, Patagonia called them totaled and repla... Read Moreced them with a new pair.
This new pair is just as good as the old pair, with one glaring exception. For some reason, Patagonia decided to remove the belt loops from the new generation and make you rely on the waistband tensioner thing built into the fly button. I don't like this technology very much, since it never seems to stay as tight as I want it too, especially when doing strenuous exercise.
The inability to use a belt is especially problematic with these pants, as they don't stretch much at all. Between the lack of stretch and the inherent bagginess of the design, they tend to run slightly larger in order to accommodate its build material and intended use.
When rock climbing, the harness holds the pants up well, but when doing anything not involving a harness, the tend to loosen up and fall down on a regular basis. These pants were perfect before, but taking away the option of a belt was a stupid move.
5 stars for the old ones with the belt loops, and 3 stars for the current iteration.
These are so great. I got the Superior Blue color and love them!
Very comfortable and soft. Hopefully they will remain durable, but they definitely seem well made.
I love the fit and the adjustable, low profile cuff toggle. But I really wish they also had beltloops. The integrated cinch-style belt works pretty well, but I would definitely prefer be... Read Morelt loops. These would be my favorite pants if not for that.
But please believe, these pants are still great!
I'm very happy with them. Just one feature I would personally change.
I have worn these pants every single time I go climbing and they have never failed me. I appreciate the elastic material, especially around the groin. They are light enough to be breathable on the hottest of days (90 in the CO sun), but also have not ripped on the gnarliest of cracks.
The pants are incredibly light and comfortable. great for hiking or everyday wear. The synch chords at the bottom can easily be adjusted. My only complaint is the draw string which takes my review down 2 stars. Patagonia please put a rubber grommet or another way to secure the draw string. I've gotten it lost inside of the pants twice and it h... Read Moreas been agonizing to get that flat string back through the hole. It makes the pants unwearable when it happens since there is no belt loop. Please fix going forward.
We're sorry to hear of this design flaw with the drawstring. You make a very valid point about this issue with our Men's RPS Rock Climbing Pants. We passed your thoughts along to our Design Team. Thank you so much for your feedback.

Great strong fabric
Good fit. Long enough in length. Lightweight strong fabric. Need a button waistband instead of snap.
Front pockets need sippers.
The 2022 RPS pant is the best mens synthetic pant made by Patagonia. Stellar, full seat and thigh fit. Amazing, unparalleled color selection, tied with darted knees, zipper pockets, synch ankle Then on, the belt system is the best Ive had on a pair of athletic pants ever. You will not be disappointed with your purchase, I own 4 pairs!
