Best Jacket Ever ?
Let's put it this way, I've snagged three of them on sale over the years. It's a great windbreaker/fleece for warmth on fall days. Because it's windproof it's fine on most warmer winter days. This jacket can be used in any number ways. When it's s little cooler out, this can be your go to jacket. If you need a slightly heavier layering piece, this jacket can handle the task. It's got all the pockets you need; phone, wallet, whatever. I definitely recommend this jacket.
The Ideal Jacket
The R2 is a perfect combination between weight and warmth for 90% of situations. The jacket is very breathable and has a water-resistant coating so it's good for light rain as well. It fits perfectly and keeps me warm when I really need it most. I find myself wearing it daily, even though I purchased this for hiking and climbing. I highly reco... Lulu alternative carry for its footprint
Typically wear an XL but had to size down as I want this jacket to be relatively tighter and more exacting for layering on my work shirt and a further layer over my R1 half zip. Well built of course and good attention to detail as it relates to cuffs that you pull at to undress. A great worthwhile buy!
This is a great product.
This is a great product. It is very comfortable and great to wear when you need to be warm but not so bundled up you cannot move. This works in all 'cool' weather! Great for golf, great for walking, great for work...I fell asleep in this and it was very comfortable. I bought two because they were THAT comfortable.
The R2 was my gateway drug to Patagonia circa 2008. I wore that iteration nearly every day (save summer) until I could see through the fleece. The next iteration I owned was the super form-fitting "light" 2012 model. It was great for performance, but definitely not casual. I recently retired that one, but with this iteration, the pendulum... Read More swung too far the other way. It's missing the raglan sleeve and, as other reviewers noted, it's oddly boxy in the chest / arm pits / biceps and tight in the collar / forearms / and waist. Otherwise, the TechFace fabric is awesome and the length is perfect. Instead of the R2, I went with an R1 and sport a vest or a shell when the weather calls for it. The gauge in the fabric is minor between the two and the fit of the R1 is more performance-oriented.
Thanks for your feedback Jared, and the opportunity to improve on design. This jacket has a slim fit, so it's interesting to hear that you experienced a boxy fit in the chest area, we'll make sure to let our team know about this. Versatile Mid Layer
The jacket works well as a mid layer under a shell as well as an outer layer while exercising. I like the longer arm length and the extra torso length when backcountry skiing. It would be nice if the neck was a bit smaller in circumference like my Icebreaker wool sweater to keep out a bit more of the cold.
Awesome Mid Layer!
Over the years I have moved away from fleece except for my base layer. Primaloft and the like is warmer per ounce and more compressible. For a typical day of downhill skiing or ice climbing I use Polartec Powerstretch as my base layer. It is considered a heavyweight base layer and when I am moving uphill I can wear it by itself. Two years ago I got... Read More a Polartec Alpha layer and loved it but feel the material isn't very durable and sheds material. I've also been doing more uphill and decided to move to a light weight merino base layer so I can better regulate my temperature. I find for uphill using the light weight base layer allows me to keep my soft shell jacket on, which cuts the wind and holds enough heat to keep me comfortable while keeping up with breathability so I don't sweat out- the bane of winter sports. I needed something to wear over my base layer for warmth but that was more durable and had better face material than Polartec Alpha. That's is where this jacket shines. The techface protects the fleece and slides under layers. It wears like a super breathable soft shell. It adds warmth when I need it and is easy to take off when I don't. People say it has a DWR and handles light precipitation, but I wouldn't trust it in this role beyond shedding some snow falling off branches while you are hiking. It's an awesome layer to wear over a lightweight base layer when you need warmth. You can wear it as a warm and breathable outer later but I would always bring a shell to go over it if any precipitation or wind is possible. I get the feeling this is going to be a new a new staple for me! Strong work Patagonia.
I really wanted to like this piece, but it fell just a tad short. As an "R2", I thought this would be a warm insulation layer, but didn't find it much warmer than my R1 pieces. I found the length to be this jacket's biggest shortcoming. It didn't layer well with my Nano Puff Jacket, sticking out about 2" below it. It also didn't work well when wearing a harness as the side pocket zippers got trapped by the waist belt. Also, the lower portion of the jacket has a tendency to roll up an make a little 'paunch' at my belt buckle. Overall I just didn't feel 'at home' in the piece and sent it back.
We're very sorry that the R2 missed the mark for you, and we really value your detailed feedback. We hope you'll find our Spring 2023 product more fitting for your purposes. Thanks so much for taking the time to review the jacket, Evan!
I wish I had 2
Absolutely epic jacket. Wish I had 2 so I can still wear one on laundry days. Hesitated between the M and L since it's a bit longer than other Patagonia L cloth I have, went for L, no regret, I wear it all the time, around the house, for hiking, soon for skiing. As true as "a jacket needs to be multifunctional" as it gets.

Read Morefferent claims and the reality: "provides extended versatility in shifting mountain conditions" - this jacket is a viable layering item but it will provide only the most minimal amount of wind protection and no real protection from rain; "high-loft, double-weave fabric is soft and warm but also highly breathable" - given that this is the R2 TechFace Jacket and there is a R1 jacket I expected the R2 to have some more weight to it, I would describe this jacket's weight as lighter than an average fleece, as to the breathability, you can't have a jacket that has a coating on it meant to provide weather resistance and end up with a garment that has above average breathability, in this case I would say that the coating is so thin and minimally effective that the jacket ends up providing ventilation that is slightly worse than a typical fleece of a similar weight; "Abrasion-resistant fabric has a durable water repellent (DWR) coating that provides a defense against moisture" - I don't believe the finish on the outside of this jacket is abrasion resistant or provided any measurable protection from rain/snow. Despite this jacket falling completely flat on the manufacturer's claims about it, I will be keeping it because a need a layering piece for skiing, and the coating on the jacket's exterior should keep it from pilling, hopefully keeping it looking good for years to come.

I have taken this on bike rides in similar temps, including mid to low 40's and windy conditions. It's adequate in these temperatures but you would probably need something warmer, especially while riding. I love all of the pockets. The chest pocket is solid and can hold my iPhone 11. The pockets zip easily and I'm a fan of the two inner pockets to hold gloves or other items. The jacket is comfortable and I like the feel of the grid lining. I'd say it's about medium weight. It isn't too light but it certainly isn't heavy. When zipped all the way up, the collar provides fairly good protection and warmth. I bought a size Large because I like to layer but I will say that I do wonder if I could have worn a Medium. I only tried on the Large. For reference, I am 5'7 about 150 lbs, 33 waist, and pretty trim. The jacket is on the longish side and does have some room to spare. I don't think it is too big but I definitely know some people like a trimmer fit. The sleeve length is fine. If I stretch my fingers all the way out the sleeves come down almost to the tips but the sleeves aren't baggy at all. My arms are skinny and to me the sleeves are fine. If you have similar measurements to me and can try them on in the store, a Medium might be a better fit for you. But as I said, I didn't try one on. This is just how the Large itself fits. The R2 is an excellent autumn jacket. I can wear it on long walks, bike rides, to work, and around town. This was a good investment because I know I will have this for several years.

Read Moreith moderate wind, I wore this as my shell over a lighter weight fleece (a competitors light weight 1/2 zip grid fleece) and a lightweight base layer. It performed exceptionally well, repelling light snow and sleet as well as protecting from the wind while remaining breathable enough to keep from sweating. Ive used the jacket to walk my dogs several times down to 20-30F with just a capilene air hoody underneath and I have been extremely impressed. I really cannot say enough good things about it: it works amazingly as a shell for wind and light precip, even keeping me dry during a fairly steady snow for ~an hour of walking the pups, works PERFECTLY as a mid layer under a gore-Tex shell, and the lofted interior fleece is amazing for insulation and comfort. This in combination with my gore-tex shell will almost certainly be my go to for alpine starts during spring/summer climbing, as it regulates perfectly without being too much and stretches/flexes quite well. Im really excited about the possibilities!
Works as advertised
Very pleased with the R2 Tech. I use it mainly for mountain biking and hiking. Does a decent job of blocking the wind while still being very breathable. On very cold days on the bike I layer and combine it with the dirt roamer MTB jacket. Perfect combination. Totally worth the price.
Great standalone fleece that's super warm!
I got the R2 Tech Face to fill the role of a standalone technical fleece for higher exertion activities and it performs very well. I usually opt for having a hood but it's very form fitting and not helmet compatible. The collar is a tad bit on the longer side but it's nice for when the wind picks up. My only gripe with this jacket is that... Read More the collar is a little wonky in the sense that it doesn't lay flat when I'm wearing it around town or at work. Other than that minor complaint, this is a bomber piece that has become my go to piece for early morning climbs and a great mid layer when layering for colder climates!
Really long, really really long
I own a lot of Patagonia gear so I have my size locked in. When I read the reviews that this garment was running long I didnt worry about it as its a jacket and I plannned to wear it underneath my Patagonia Parka which is also a large. Nope. It hung below the hem line of my ski parka. Otherwise it fit great but this would be better labeled as a tal... Read Morel product. I am good with Patagonia updating styles etc but I am bought into buying their great products that last forever and if the styles are not compatible over the years it seems to be counter productive to all of their efforts to be more environmentally friendly.
Comfortable, multi-purpose fleece
My into to Patagonia fleece was their R1 quarter zip which is for the most part comfortable except for additional awkward shifting of the sleeves to align the sleeves to a preferred comfort level. The R2 Tech face does not have this issue. The R2 Techface is my go-to preferred cool/chilly weather fleece that fits in just as well in the office as it... Read More does on the hiking trails of Ojai. I can confidently recommend this jacket as well worth the price. There's 2 improvements I"d recommend. First, at least 1 interior pocket with a zipper and thicker material. Second, a zippered collar with a thin material hoodie inside. These are quality of life features that would improve an already excellent product.
Damn near perfect fleece
Ive owned various R fleeces of all numbers and types, and this is notably better than the regular R2 and the last 2 versions of the R3. The fact that its the same list price as the normal R2 is a bonus which makes it a no-brainer of choosing strictly for function. The fabrics beautiful exterior and luxurious interior make it my preferred midlayer o... Read Moren most cold days. Very warm on its own, and it breathes like a normal fleece yet blocks wind but not too much to restrict vapor flow. Very stretchy, sleeves are longish which is a love/hate thing (they dont have thumb holes but the cuffs stretch to cover cold gloveless hands in a pinch. Pockets arent fleece lined, but Im digging the smoother faced material that also is used for the two drop ins. So far Ive noticed its good for me down to 40-45° F pretty idle w a cap air base layer , and with a micro puff hoody I can easily go about freezing. I havent dared try it under my Macro Puff since from experience it will keep me comfy at 30°F w just a regular ol 150g merino T. I can imagine the R2 tech l+macro to go into the teens if ever needed. It layers over my R1 hoody like a glove, joining forces to makes a R3 hoody combo thats hard to beat. If Im moving in the real cold it I dont need a shell for rain Ill throw the airshed (the Mac Gyver of kit) on over or under. The cut is long like the R1 hoody, perfect for the additional coverage real cold and windy weather often requires. Im 56 130 lbs ordered size XS and its spot-on. Damn-near perfect fleece, wouldnt change a thing
Super warm- really to warm!
I really like the r2- its packable and looks great - I like a slimmer cut and it defiantly has a nice formed shape- Im 5-11 and 170 lbs ( I got a medium) - but be warned - the R2 is warm!!! Its almost to warm for fall or spring - I wear it on 60 degree days with just a t shirt under it and I am roasting! I really should switch to the R1 but the one... Excellent jacket, size down- sleeves are really long.
Got this jacket in time for chilly weather. It is very light, warm and repels enough moisture in light rain with my experience. It should make a great mid layer for even colder weather since it is not bulky. So far I have just used it as an outer layer over a T-shirt with temps in the high 40's / low 50's and light wind and rain and it is... Read More plenty warm. The grid pattern fleece is super soft against the skin and the jacket stretches and allows for easy movement. The sizing is a bit odd. I initially ordered a size Small since that is my usual size in Patagonia and other comparable brands. However, I ended up exchanging for an XS because though the body fit okay with the Small, the sleeves were VERY long and baggy in the upper arms. Even though it says "slim fit" I recommend going a size down for this jacket. Luckily Patagonia makes the exchange process easy. Overall really happy with the product and hope to be using it for years.
Love the jacket but fit is weird
The material on this jacket is exactly what I have been looking for but it doesn't fit well at all. I wear a medium in all the Patagonia gear I own (10+ items) and the fit is usually very good. This jacket has freakishly long arms (my arms are anything but short) and was really loose all over for the size. Was unable to try on in store so went... Read More with usual sizing. Sadly I had to return but will try again with one size smaller and see if that works out.
Great Layer for Sitting, paragliding, climbing....
I have been wearing Patagonia for years (both my daughters having worked for the company and having been a rock climber since the '70s). The R2 is one of the best pieces of clothing I have purchased. It is warm--more than the light R1 but WAY less bulky than the R4. It blocked light wind and as a wonderful technical fit...long in the back, goo... Everything You could ask for
This is the perfect layer for cool coastal winter days. I was searching high and low for a lightweight layer that could keep the damp chill of coastal Southern California winters off me and this jacket has surpassed my expectations. Awesome technical piece, weird sleeves
This jacket is a go-to for hiking under 40 degrees, casual wear, travel, and ice climbing. This and the R1 jacket were fantastic pieces for a September trip to Iceland with weather that varied with the hour. However, the fit of the sleeves is weirdly puffy around the biceps, and a bit bunched around the armpits. It’s especially odd given the fitted... Read More contour of the lower arms. Wonky collar, awesome jacket
I’ve been using this jacket for hiking and climbing around 30-45 degrees and while skiing under a shell 30 and lower. It’s got just the right mix of breathability, wind blocking, and warmth to keep me comfortable when steaming uphill but not freezing on the downhill leg. Really appreciate the stretch and semi-soft shell hard face, both of which mak... Read Moree this a more usable jacket than a standard R2. However, it’s got a very tall collar that doesn’t lie down very readily, and it’s quite long - hip length, not waist length. The hoody version has a very close-fitting, scuba-style hood that covers your chin, so it also is wonky in the collar department. I tried both and settled on the jacket. All that said, it’s such a good winter hiking piece I can forgive some idiosyncrasies.
So far so amazing
I am pretty tough on my fleece and demand a lot from my layering systems. As a river guide I work in a lot of conditions and need my layers to be light, warm, breathable and comfy. The R2 totally delivers. From Maine in January to Panamanian rain forest this layer has kept me warm, well regulated and fits in on just about any adventure.
Great material but fit is a bit too long
I am 6’2” 170 lb and got the medium. It is beautifully constructed with great material. I’m sure it was intended to be long for cold winds etc, but I almost always have the sleeves rolled up a few inches and the bottom of the jacket prob covers 1/3 of my butt. I’m sure this was the intention by Patagonia to make a longer jacket, but I just got it ... Read Morefor Florida winters so I don’t really need the length :).
Ms R2® TechFace Jacket
Very comfortable and perfect midlayer for winter. Also works as a standalone jacket in the fall with just a t-shirt underneath. Super comfortable and would definitely buy again (but hope that this one lasts long enough that I don't have to). My only complaint is that the sleeves are just a bit long, but that's a very minor issue.
Great jacket for active could be warmer
I’ve worn this jacket almost daily for two months trekking and traveling. It is great as a layer and when active it holds up in colder weather but doesn’t keep the amount of warmth I would like when I stop moving even with additional layers. The fit and comfort are nice for everyday use.
Love my OG R2, by itself or with a shell, probably the most versatile jacket I have. When the new TechFace came out I was super interested, and after trying on M and L, because if you know the brand you know the size can vary year to year. I didn’t need it. Family told me not to get it. Already own two R1 Tech face hoodies. And yet, I covet this piece like no other. The fit is off
I tried both the medium and large. I'm 6'1 and weigh 175. The medium was very tight in the body and the sleeves were a bit short. When I tried on the large, I was first worried that I received a XL. It was baggy everywhere and was too big. The R1 techface large fits perfectly. So, I'm not sure what's going on with the R2 sizi... Read Moreng.
