Delicately presenting dry flies to discerning trout on a spring creek, pounding a streamer in front of an albie blitz just to get noticed or endless casting on a cold, windy stretch of steelhead river: It’s all fly fishing but the passions and the conditions are different. We build our gear in conditions-specific systems to keep you dry, comfortable and focused on the fish.

When I ask folks in the lower forty-eight if they’ve heard of the Pebble Mine in Alaska’s Bristol Bay, the answer is invariably ”no.” This, despite the fact that a Canadian company, Northern Dynasty is proposing to develop the largest open-pit mine in North America. The location is the headwaters of the greatest two sockeye-producing rivers in the world.

I am alone, calf-deep in warm Bahamian water; in front of me is a perfect bonefish flat that stretches farther than I can wade. My three companions have wandered off to find their own versions of fly-fishing nirvana. A quarter mile behind me our tents and kayaks sit on the lee side of a small island. We are two-days-paddle into the maze of mangroves, sand spits and water that makes up the southern tip of Andros Island, sans lodge, guides and beer.

Red GoldFelt Soul Media spent Summer 2007 in Alaska’s Bristol Bay following the world’s largest run of sockeye salmon. They made a film that sought to answer which is the more valuable resource; the self-sustaining runs of salmon that have enriched the local environment and fisherman for thousands of years or the $300 billion of gold, copper and molybdenum buried at the headwaters of the watershed. | |

The Guidewater Jacket is a breakthrough fishing shell. We discarded preconceived notions of what a fishing jacket should be and put together our best knowledge of fabrics, design and technology to create a fully-featured, highly technical piece of angling equipment. The fabric is a waterproof, breathable, 3-layer, 4.2 oz, 50-denier stretch nylon developed for our mountaineering clothing line. To that we added a unique pocket system – which includes waterproof and mesh pockets – engineered to keep even the most gear-intensive angler organized. With this jacket you don’t need a vest. Tying it all together is Patagonia’s minimalist design ethic, this jacket helps you focus on the fish, not on your clothes. |

Their names conjure up the wind driven deluge that drives these fish back to their birth streams to reproduce. Success requires the ability to stand in 40-degree water, in the pouring rain, or driving snow, and throw streamers a good 70 feet, over, and over, and over.

From beach to jetty, kayak to power skiff, the changing seasons of inshore saltwater fishing – whether it’s East or West Coast – require a flexible approach and versatile gear. Saltwater fishing places heavy demands on both gear and angler.

Unrelenting heat and humidity challenge the saltwater and bass junkies. With sunscreen and bug dope the treatment of the day, you need clothing that will move the moisture off your skin to keep you as comfortable as possible in these sizzle and sauté conditions.
