We’ve tried out our warmest down jacket for babies in the Patagonia steppe and Rocky Mountain front, and unlike our wee field testers, it never needed a nap. The Baby Hi-Loft Down Sweater Hoody is totally windproof and weather-resistant thanks to a superdurable polyester mini-ripstop shell and polyester plain-weave liner fabric, both with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish. Lofty warmth comes from 600-fill-power Traceable Down (duck down traced from parent farm to apparel factory to help ensure the birds that supply it are not force-fed or live-plucked), which unpacks from small spaces with its shape intact. Cold season amenities include a quilted, 3-panel hood; full-length zipper with wind flap, zipper garage and reflective zipper pulls; two zippered handwarmer pockets; elasticized back hem; binding around hood and sleeve cuffs to seal out chill. Hand-me-down ID label.

Recycled Polyester

In 1993, we adopted fleece into our product line made from post consumer recycled (PCR) plastic soda bottles. We were the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to do so. PCR® clothing was a positive step towards a more sustainable system – one that uses fewer resources, discards less and better protects people’s health.

Today, we’re able to utilize more sources for recycled polyester and offer it on more garments such as Capilene® baselayers, shell jackets, board shorts, and fleece. We now recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste, and worn out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce many of our clothes.

Using recycled polyester lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source, curbs discards and reduces toxic emissions from incinerators.

Traceable Down Insulation

All Patagonia virgin down is certified to the Advanced Global Traceable Down standard by NSF International. The Advanced certification level means our down suppliers conducted audits all the way back to the parent farms to ensure there was no live-plucking and that broader humane animal welfare standards were faithfully observed throughout the supply chain. Rated 5 out of 5 by from My 3 year old requests this jacket every time! My 3 year old son has worn this jacket since the cold set in this fall. He’s an active outdoor kid, even in northern, snowy Michigan winter. The fit is perfect. Durable. VERY happy and I will be sad when he outgrows this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from He loves his coat! I bought this coat in size 2T for my son in fall of 2016 (16 months old at the time) and this coat is still going strong. I have a busy toddler, now 2.5 years who wears this coat daily for all of our adventures and it has held up great, and better than I expected. It keeps him warm and cozy. He takes this everywhere with him like a blanket. I expect he will fit it through the end of this winter/spring, (34 lb right now) and if we're lucky use it early next fall before going up in size. I definitely plan on keeping this coat around for the next kid and have no doubts it will last.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible for kids! The fabric is paper thin. My toddler’s coat was torn in several places within months of purchase. Not suitable for active children.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't live without it. We were gifted one in size 12months when our son was born. He wore it from about 10 months until well after he was 2. We live in Alaska and so it was used year-round. When it started getting too small, we got a 3T for him to move straight into. He's now 4.5 years old and so has been wearing that one about 2 years straight. It has some patches but was going strong until the zipper bust a few weeks ago. And it caused a bit of panic when it went!! Nothing else fills the gap! He has a ski jacket he was given as a present that is warm but much, much bulkier. Luckily we are traveling and went to a Patagonia store today and have a replacement on the way. We'll only have to be without it for another week or so. It's so warm, wears well, fits under rain jackets, and doesn't restrict movement one bit. I seriously plan to get one every few years for his entire childhood if I can!
