Our mussels are from the waters of Galicia, Spain; Sagres, Portugal, and Chiloe, Chile, where they’re grown on long underwater ropes—their clustered shells providing a protective shelter for young fish and other marine life. Mussels filter the water as they feed on wild microplankton, Which could help improving water quality.

We’re sorry to hear that you found some byssus material in your tin of mussels. While we take great care to remove it during processing—using both mechanical and manual methods—it’s not always possible to catch every strand. Byssus is the natural fiber mussels use to anchor themselves to rocks in the ocean, and it can be quite firmly attached.
Finding a bit of byssus is rare, but not entirely unexpected—similar to occasionally finding a shell fragment in nuts or a small stone in lentils. It’s completely natural and safe, but we understand it can be surprising.
