UPF Fabric

Lacking fur, feathers or scales, we humans have to think up clever ways to protect ourselves from the sun. Products with the UPF designation provide built-in sun protection that won’t wear off.

To achieve sun protection, Patagonia takes a varied approach, depending on the degree of protection desired and the fabric used. Elements of the strategy can range from yarn selection to fabric construction to the use of special finishes (especially for light colors which generally provide less protection).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I've never had more compliments on 'workout' pants I get a new compliment on these pants 7/10 times I wear them. And it used to be 100% when they were new (since nobody had seen them yet). Just yesterday I was at second base during a softball game and the opposing 2nd basement said 'I love those pants!' I wear them (indoor) rock climbing all the time, running, hiking, grocery shopping, softball, sitting on the get the point. I'm 5'1 and 125lb, an XS is perfect size and length for me. I have the black pair. I'm currently stalking the website so I can order a second pair when they come back in stock. I'm terrified if these rip or eventually get washed out that they will be gone forever. Buy these pants (but save me an XS)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A bit short for tall people I wish these came in Tall sizes. I am 5’11” and the knitted cuff hits about a quarter of the way up my calf. Not a big deal because I bought these for gardening and doing work around the house. The high-water look will keep me from ever wearing them elsewhere, though. I am a size 8 (in clothing not sized for skinny, hip-less women, as Patagonia clothing is). I purchased both the M and the L, based on reviews saying they run large. I was notified after purchase that the M was out of stock (truly need a better inventory system, Patagonia!), so I was stuck with the L. They are too large, really, but I prefer baggy pants for the garden. The waistband has no interior tie, which it absolutely should (ahem!), but anyone who is clever with a needle and thread can add one. The tubular waistband is is like that of sweatpants, so you just cut a couple holes and bind the edges, and thread the tie through. But next version you do of these, Patagonia designers, you need to add a tie! And offer Tall sizes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Happy Pants Dance Definitely my new wardrobe favorite. They are quite the upgrade from my beat-up, broken-in, 20-year old gray sweats, yet they are just as comfortable and I can actually wear them out in public. Be prepared for waves of compliments when you do wear them out in public because they are quite deserving. They run large... I'm typically an XL in all Pata products but after ordering both sizes, the L was a better fit for me. I'm coming in at a healthy and robust 5'9", 175lb build. It was actually kind of nice trying on the XL's... it's not often I get to say "Oh my, these are too big... I'll have to go with the smaller size". The black goes with everything and looks great. I see a pair of grey in my near future.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Too Large I was so excited about these pants. I've had my eye on them for a while and when my size came back in stock I ordered them immediately. The fabric is amazing and so soft, the pants are comfy, and the I love the style, but they are WAY too large in the waist and hips. For reference, I'm 5'0, 36" hips and 27" waist and I ordered the XS. I had at least four inches of room in the waist. I considered getting them tailored, but these pants would have to be completely deconstructed to take in the seams, and it wasn't worth the money if I couldn't guarantee they would look as good afterwards. I'm so sad to have to return these. I was prepared for the waist to be a little large, but not to this extent. If you would normally wear a larger size, these will probably fit fine, and I would recommend them.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I would've loved these pants... ... if my size hadn't been out of stock! They run pretty large! I am usually a small in Patagonia, but saw previous reviews saying to size down. However, the extra small was out of stock. So I ordered the small hoping they'd work - they didn't. They were far too baggy and I wanted them to be more fitted. I am 5'9'' and about 130lbs. Was worried too that the xsmalls would be too short since I'm tall. But great pants.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything Pant I wear these pants for EVERYTHING. Climbing, hiking, casually and anything else. They hold up so well and are so comfortable, I wish there were more colors! The fabric is really stretchy and comfortable but they fall in the right place so they're also very flattering. The fabric is also water resistant and is breathable in warm weather and can be layered easily for the winter. The one complaint that I have is that I have legs and these have gotten pretty short with each wash. I still wear them because I don't care that much, but it would be nice to have an option for a longer inseam. These also do run big. I'm 5'9" and 135 lbs and usually wear a small, but I have a XS in these and they fit perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Comfy and cute! I love these pants! They are perfect for hiking, lounging, yoga, running errands, you name it! The wide elastic waistband is comfortable and stays in place. The material is very lightweight, breathable, and water repellant so it performs great in the rain, too! I am 5' 7" 135lbs and normally wear a size 6 in jeans. I sized down to a small based on reviews and they fit great...not too short or too tight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Super comfy and happy hiking indeed I bought these pants before a camping trip to the Olympic Peninsula. They did not disappoint. I wore them for lounging around, sleeping, hiking and even on the plane home. An all around versatile pant. For reference I’m 5’5” and weigh 160 and the small fit (surprisingly) They are stretchy, so I’m sure they work for a range of sizes.
