I am 5'9" and 200 lbs. and purchased the Large size. Being an avid bodyboarder for 40 years, most of that weight lies in my thighs (24)" and hips (44"). The Large size fits me properly, as some of the length is taken up by my width I suppose. This is my first R2 (4/3 equivalent) that I have ever bought in my life, and I am thank... Read Moreful for the extra warmth during long early morning sessions in San Diego lately. The wetsuit seems to be slightly more pliant the more I wear it, and even after a few weeks of wear the seams are still completely waterproof. With this R2 wetsuit, I am looking forward to winter mornings and bigger waves.
This suit is awesome. Super warm and flexible... as long as you get the right size. I am a Medium Tall in every other suit on the market, and based on Patagonia's sizing chart I figured a MT would be right. I got it and it was warm, but VERY tight around my chest. Like ridiculously tight. I thought that the Yulex just needed to be broken in, b... Read Moreut the seams around the chest just eventually fell apart due to the stress of it being so tight. Returned it and got a LT, fits perfect and is very warm.
Just for a reference, the suit kept me super warm for hours in 52 degree water. Worth the dime, especially with the return policy. Just be aware the suits definitely run small.
This is by far the best wetsuit I own. As a southern California surfer from Santa Barbara down to Pacific Beach I can use this wetsuit most of the year. I use a thinner Patagonia overall style in July August and September. The wetsuit zipper small loops and stiffness and flush issues that I had with earlier wetsuits have vastly improved. The repair... Read More program that you have is amazing and Im so proud of Patagonia and will continue to pay a little more for a superior product. I am a loyal customer for a reason. Patagonia makes outstanding products and cares at least a little bit about this planet. Thank you so much. The hanger that goes with the wetsuit is too flimsy and always ends up breaking. Id rather that hanger be strong and tough so it lasts for 10 years. Respectfully Christopher Baker . The happy surfer
I had a R1 and a R3. I didn't need the R3 much for Southern California and I like to keep is less used for extra cold mornings and for when I travel. So I got this suit. It is a great winter suit for So-Cal. I have had Patagonia wetsuits since they first came out and they continue to have high quality wetsuits. This one felt a little tight in ... Read Morethe shoulder when I first bought it but after 5 or 6 surfs it started to fit great. I would recommend this wetsuit to anyone. Just try it on first as these wetsuits fit some better than others.
This is my second r2 that Ive bought. The first one lasted 5 years and was the best wetsuit ever!!! This new one is even better! More flexible, easier to put on, and easier to paddle. Incredible product.
This suit is ridiculously warm. It will keep you straight up toasty in 54-56 degree water. Ive had friends with 5/4s that get cold quicker than i do during central California sessions. Only downside is the chest seems a bit tight. May stretch out as i wear it more. If youre looking for warmth this suit has it.

Warm, Comfortable Wetsuit
I bought this for my husband who is 6'5" and has been wearing Large Tall but feels restricted in the shoulders. The XL is too short in the legs but it works and he loves the suit. Comfortable, warm and very stretchy so it's easy to paddle in and also pretty easy for him to take on and off.
This suit fit very tight to begin with and within a matter of 3-4 months, already had holes in it. one of the holes on the thigh is gigantic too. Although it fits better now, it is tight on my arm pits and groin. These suits only really work if you are long and skinny.

Warm & Perform
Bought Patagonia for the first time this winter and I had the R1 (60-65F) and it was so good and so flexible that I ditched my 2 year old Rip Curl 4 mil and got the R2 4 mil. Just got it and was actually warm even after my sesh on the coldest day of the year.
Got the R3 initially but felt it was too much for even San Francisco (and I get cold easily). so I switched to the R2 and love it. After using O'neil suits my whole life I wanted to give the Patagonia a try and I'm happy I did. It's definitely not as flexible as a lot of the other brands out there but flexible enough to do the job. W... Read Morehat I like about it is how snug and how perfect it fits on me. I'm always between a large and a medium but this is a 'perfect' medium. Fitting wise I'm very skinny and 5'11" for anyone who's wants to get this suit. After using it the material always feels a little stiff. But I'm always surprised, even after using it for a whole year, at how well the suit has maintained it's flexibility and fit. For a 3.5/3mm suit, I find it just as warm as any 4/3. Best thing about the suit is that you can feel good about buying something that doesn't hurt the environment when it's made. I'd tell anyone if your sitting on the fence about buying it...Dude stop wasting surf time and go buy it.
I am 6', 170 lbs. Love this suit. It super warm and is great for So Cal winter surf. The yulex material is surprisingly flexible. I found that it stretches quite a bit once you are in the water, more so than other brands, so make sure its really snug and feels tight when trying it on. I would love for the key loop string to be longer as it is ... Read Moretough to get the key on and off. I just leave my truck key attached all the time now to solve this. Overall it's a solid suit.
Im 58, 165 and went with the MS. Snug, but flexible. Super warm suit - warmer than advertised. Wore this week in New Jersey (48 degree water, 35 air, 20knot offshores). Lasted 2 hours before I even thought about the cold... seriously warmer than 5 mils Ive owned in the past. Still relatively new, so cant speak on lifespan, but Patagonia got this on... This is probably one of the best suits I've ever had. It's super warm, doesn't let any water in what so ever, but the only downside is that it's just a bit baggy on the underarm part. Overall though it's amazing
Ordered this suit as the water temperature dropped in southern california. The suit keeps me warm in the early morning water and still allows for plenty of flex. Super impressed by the seams on this suit in particular - they are well secured and seem like they will last for a long time. So far a great purchase.
Ive had my suit for 10 months and use it about 10 times per month. Very warm but material is stiff. Seams break down quickly. Already have multiple holes in various parts of the glued seam that let water in. Ankle tore while putting on with hardly any force. Great initially but degrades quickly.
